NB this post is not directed at hardcore gamers, but at average joes who would still like to get 100% of the ME2 achievments. There might be nothing here you won't find elsewhere on the boards - this is just to let you know it can be done even by gaming chumps like me

I am not a great gamer, I am particularly poor at shooters. I have never played Halo on anything above normal - I usually stick to RPGs where high level chars are essentially god-like or play Fifa/Forza instead. When Mass Effect came along I knew I would play it - a lot. Sci-fi RPG with nods to the classics. What's not to love.

It goes without saying that after wandering around the colonies spamming barrier or immunity, the requirement to use cover or have your butt handed to you - even on 'normal' was somewhat of a shock. The 'insanity' factor in ME1 was the maddening tedium of taking down pirates with immunity or regenerating Krogan - not difficult as much as time consuming.

For a recreational gamer like me using the console, ME2 has definitley switched the emphasis from insanely tedious to insanely difficult. I started 4 insanity playthroughs - with a variety of classes - and usually gave up somewhere between failing to rescue Jack and getting pwnd by two scions on Horizon.

Thanks to the general feeling on the boards that the Soldier was the easiest insanity playthrough, I finally opted to travel this route. In my initial attempts I found I spent a lot of time shooting things anyway: why not be good at it.

Where Am I?  I am past the disbaled collector ship and just collected Tali from Haestrom.
Build? Heightened Adrenaline rush, Heavy concussive blast, Shock Trooper and Tungsten ammo. 40 points'
Gone for squad ammo on Grunt and Zaaed. Will probably spend the last 10 on heavy disruptor

So, my thoughts:
Soldier works. Extra health and wonderous damage bonuses make things if not easy, at least survivable.

I chose heightened rush as you seem not to take to many hits when active anyway  - time slows, you shoot or move, you do lots of damage. Rush has saved me more times than I can remember. It is also very useful when you need to break cover and move. when battling Praetorians the last thing you want do is get pinned with no way to avoid its death choir thingamy - rush is as good as, if not better than, cloak for repositioning. IMO

Heavy concussive shot:  I usually use it defensively - charging or rapidly advancing foes, even with defences stripped, still take some killing and can still do significant damage - unlike the minions - geth hunters, detroyers, krogan and the like will just keep coming. Concuss gives you some breathing room and does some work against barriers. Handy for removing those last few points rather than wasting a full warp.

Shock trooper - I use rush to move - no need for extra storm speed. extra 6% damage for commando? I am not gonna do the numbers but taking into consideration rush, ammo powers, weapon damage up-grades, stabilizing gauntlets and so on, I figured that the 10% health bonus would better suit my ineptitude.

Tungsten Ammo - 70% damage bonus against health and armor. Scions have armor. Krogans have armor. Big arse YMIR mechs have armor. Harbinger has armor. Geth colussus has armor. Praetorians have armor. geth Primes have armor. Various shotgun wielding eclipse mercs have armor. Those freaking husks and really annoying fenris mechs have armor.  Did I mention 70% damage bonus against health and armor?

I use guns with lots of ammo and rapid fire - scimitar, revenant, mantis. good damage and forgiving on the less precise.

Pick your squaddies carefully - or save before you trigger the squad selection and start of a mission. Ignore your love/hate for their dialogue, dualist cop-out philosophy, weak voice acting, or tendency to stand in the middle of nowhere and die - they all do the last one anyway . Just pick the ones who have the skills you need for the job or cover your short falls.

If you are like me you will probably want to Stay in cover. Be patient. Pick your moments. pay attention to the firing patterns of big foes, save your rush for the break so you avoid lots of damage and do lots of damage. Watch especially for those attacks that stun or knock you out of cover. If knocked out of cover do not try and shoot your way out of trouble - you will get nailed. While I appreciate that sometimes you do need to force the issue, sometimes you just need to focus on getting back into cover.  Against Harbinger, cover that allows you to move laterally seems to be effective at avoiding his attacks. While you're waiting for a power to recharge or a break in fire  just keep moving left and right without breaking cover. Also - flank enemies and protect you rear. Try and create wide killing fields/no mans land situations with good distance between your squaddie - increasing the arcs of fire. You can even send em forward, let em shoot, whilst you stay ready to take on the chargers. Enemies are not endless, there is a set number for every battle. Sometimes you just need to sit tight and let them come to you. Then kill them.

It does get easier after Horizon - just like a lot of posts say - upgrade, upgrade, upgrade. Don't sit on your cash. 90,000 credits in your account won't save your butt on Haestrom. You cant bribe geth. spend it on something to help you kill them before you get there.

ARC PROJECTOR - I didn't use the other heavy weapons. Again, I suck at shooters. Arc projector will forgive you. Arc projector loves you. eg. Removes armor from all effected husks and slows them permanently to a walk. makes the last section of the disabled collector ship a doddle. fire and use Miranda and thane to throw the little bastards away.  Jacobs loyalty mission - that end battle always screwed me. I died there many times on veteran and normal! Isanity play through - three well placed shots with the Arc projector and the only thing left standing was the heavy Mech - easy - cause you are smart and have tungsten ammo which helped you nail all the lokis on the way up.

Anyway - that's enough.

and remember - you only have to beat insanity once to get the achievment :crying:
