Playing through as an engineer and, bonus-wise, the best headwear would seem to be the Umbra Visor.
Problem.
Shep in an Umbra Visor looks ri-goddam-diculous.
Anyone else who sacrifices min/maxing their Shep for making Shep look good? (Or even selecting an armor piece whose bonus you may not need in order to look more bad@ss?)

I'm sorry like the recon hood. It looks sweet and adds to the weapons!

If something looks "retarded" then no I wouldn't wear it ... Most of the time you don't need the extra bonuses much anyway.

fashion vs function
I usually go for function over form, then customise my armour with colour/material appropriately. Never liked the look of the visor, so I've avoided it.

Fashion all the way. This game isn't all that difficult that we'd need every advantage. Too bad these "fashion" choices aren't more commonplace in ME2.

I didn't use any of the bonus armors just so I could have all the customization color choices. :3

My Shepards never wear any headgear, they all look stupid.

I choose looks over functionality most of the time, though sometimes sacrifices have to be made. ME2 is easy enough to not have to make them, though. That is also the reason why i rather play with a femShep.

Yeah, my infiltrator should wear the +10% head shot damage visor, but it looks kinda dumb.

I never wear a helmet, and therefore won't wear any of the 'special' DLC armour. I like to be able to see Shep's face when she talks, dammit!
The visor, though, looks pretty good. I like the visor.
I do have a tendancy to pick whichever greaves/shoulder pads/etc look best in the pattern I've chosen though.

I never have a helmet on. I was pretty pleased with all the N7 modular armor in ME2, but there still aren't any helmets that are worth wearing (lookswise) imo.

Actually that's the one my Infiltrators and soldiers never leave home without.

Yeah I don't like headgear either. Also the capacitor chestplate is probably the best option, but it makes it look like you have nipples all over your chest.
In ME3 I hope that they give more options for armor (i.e. four or five pieces that give the same bonus) or let the look of the armor be independent from the bonuses.

For an infiltrator the Visor is a sensible and Fashionable choice. Umbra visor does look weird, but it suits my Renegade soldier Shep. The Recon hood is great if you are going with an all black ninja look.
As for chest gear, The Aegis or Capacitor both look fine. I stay away from stimulator conduits and such as they put this stupid belt around your waist - the only leg option I use is ordinance packs, which serve a good function and look fine. I used to use amplifier shoulder pads but I stopped because they look like football/hockey gear.

The visor is about as far as I'll go with head gear. Your character looks incredibly stupid when talking to someone outside of battle with the helmet equipped. I like to see expressions thank you. And my character is not Master Chief!

Perfectly normal, my wife and I have goalie equipment we like to wear. All. The. Time.
Honestly though, I think the death of paper doll dress up RPGs sucks, character customization is the beginning of every RPG and the tools to do so are become less and less robust. DA:O had great facial customization and all, but you couldn't alter phenotype, muscle mass, height, nothing below the neck. This all serves to take away from the joy of RPG dress up, yes dress up. In ME2 you get some swappable armour components, and that is a massive step up from what CRPGs have been becoming in more recent years. We went from being able to tweak a myriad of components in Morrowind to a pale shadow of that in more recent efforts. Even Baldur's Gate allowed some pretty impressive variance in gear, only to have that fade in the years since.
It seems to be that with these swappable armour components Bioware is trying to bring that back. Now if they would go full on Morrowind style for ME3.
Hmm, that became a rant.. FASHION FIRST!

I use headshot visor, so dont have to worry about it. And the differences in armor are almost useless, the whole thing feels slapped on last second. I paint my armor once and never touch it again throughout the game.

Most of the bonuses are very small and don't make a big difference in the larger scheme of things. For instance, I normally play on Veteran, and whether I pick Incineration Blast or Heavy Incineration, I still can't kill the enemy with one hit (exception is the husks), I still need to pop off a few rounds to finish it off - So if I fit the amplifier plates and the Umbra Visor, its still not enough to get the job done in one hit. Its not even clear how these bonuses are added, as the upgrade display stats are already misleading. If you upgrade say SMG damage the first time, thats 10% extra damage. The second time it says you are getting 20% extra damage, when in fact its only an extra 10% - in other words it replaces the bonus of your previous upgrade. Thats not intuitive. So I don't know if I equip multiple power enhancing items if it adds up the bonuses or just uses the larger bonus modifier.
As such, for me its more about fashion than function - except two items - the OHAP and the Ordinance Pack. I really appreciate the extra ammo, but I think I must be the only person out there who is very frustrated with the OHAP weapons locker bug. I liked the capacitor chest plate until someone made the multiple nipple comment, now its ruined for me

No helmet. The game isn't that hard. You don't need the extra points in flossing or aardvark copulation or whatever they offer.
Now if they made like a bonnet that added to the amount of ammo you could carry, I'd wear that.

I love that visor!
I wear it on Sheps who don't even do headshots, haha.

I go more fashion than function. Don't wear a helmet, but i'll wear the life support webbing until after the collector ship (when i can get the asymmetric defense layer) even though it looks kind of silly. Though as a bunch of people have said i'm not sure the bonuses make that much of a difference. I mean what is +10% health going to buy you on insanity? a fraction of a second?
