I'm at the end and I have dwarves, elves, redcliff, and mages as squads I can select. I noticed there is one other slot empty and was curious as to what if anything could go there? Crows is the only thing I can think of. I killed them though.

Also, any benefits for NOT using squads? This game is soooo easy second time through, even on hard I haven't been using them.  Was wondering if more exp was given.

Also, what's the level cap? 25? If I were to kick out companions early in game, would the XP pool have more to give to the available companions since there would be less to go around? Wondering if it's possible to reach the cap and how.

No, the extra slot is for Golems. And the levels of your companions waiting in camp is based on your Warden's level -- they're one below. You are not penalized for recruiting people.

Edit: you do get more experience for not using the armies.

I use the Dalish for the Alienage part, Redcliff for the part with the two dragon thralls and what not, and save the Dwarves for the roof. Otherwise I don't use anyone. Did this last night, didn't even use the mages. With the Dwarves, Loghain, Oggy, and my dual wielding warrior, we took the dragon down pretty quick...I would mention Wynne, but she got stepped on..or landed on, so she was gone pretty quick, not that we needed her apparently. I even went and bought out the best healing potions and I barely used any. I'm not braggin, I was actually a little surprised it was that easy this time around.

Frankly, I wish that instead of having the armies at your command to summon, I wish you could decide which roles they will play in the overall battle. Like put Dwarves here...or something.

I got right up to the archdemon before i realised i could have used the armies earlier. But i defeated the archdemon without them anyway. Next time i'll use them to better effect
