Peoples main problem with the Mako wasn't the Mako itself, but how it was implemented. They automatically associate it with drudging through empty worlds, inching over steep mountains to get to a crashed escape pod that held some useless matriarch writings or something.
I didn't care for that myself, but I personally really liked it on the story missions. Where you followed a linear path on even terrain (thus no pouncing balloon physics), taking out bad guys. Using it on story missions made the worlds just seem grand in scale and epic, and just plain gave the game scope.
Using it to get from point A to point B on a story mission also did a lot for immersion if you ask me. Consider Noveria for example. You get to the Garage, and then you drive through the harsh weather until you get to Peak 15. It really gave you a sense of the environment you were in. Had that mission been in ME2, you would've reached the garage, looked at a loading screen, then suddenly you were on Peak 15. Not nearly as immersive and cool, if you ask me.

Noveria was definitely one of the Mako's better missions.

I'll make up my mind on the Hammerhead after trying it out. I just hope the homing missiles at least require you to aim, rather than just mashing the trigger and everything on screen dies.

My problem with the Mako was how it handled exactly the same regardless of the planet you're on.
Everything from traction to gravity has no effect on handling? Really?
But the idea of the Mako is awesome.

the shuttle was the equal replacement to the mako in the normandy replication, why drive when you can fly?
which gameplay-wise, translates to "why drive over long boring tundras when you can skip all that with a cutscene?(/not cheat by rocket sniping everything from a safe distance?)

The Mako was terrible as both transportation and especially as a combat platform.

I actually enjoyed the combat in the Mako. Thresher Maw's were actually a challenge then. And it was just fun watching enemies burn to a crisp or launch them into the air with the cannon.

All of the Mako's problems would have been fixed by making it less able to climb mountains, a bit less bouncy, and have an increase in the angle up and down at which the turret could aim.
