Thanks to a nice little virus on my home computer I will need to completely reformat and install windows.  I would love to save my characters so would I only have to copy the save folder and then place those saves back once I am done or would I need something else in order for them to work?

You save the whole folder, as it has your saved game, profile & acheivments.
