Why is Twilight so appealing?

So what's going on here? What makes the book so good that people start comparing it to Harry Potter? Am I missing something? Am I just acting biased? I've heard all types of bad things about it...so why do people read it?

I for one can't stand it, it's just one of those ridiculous overhyped franchises that' s wrose than mediocre(It doesn't help that the author of the books is a horrible writer).
I am a fan of vampire fiction but the vampires of this franchise are emo posers who should fade into obscurity.

I have no idea. None whatsoever. They are poorly written (understatement), the plot is so thin one could see through it without even holding it up to the light, and the characters have little to no discernable character.
It's not just girls. I know some guys who like them. I also know several girls, myself included, who despise them, although the number would seem to be sadly low.
My first (joking) guess is that the people who like it have never actually read a book before, and thus think 'Oh neat! It's words! On paper!'.
My second (more charitable) theory is that people think they're so bad they're good, and it's akin to watching Plan 9 From Outer Space. These people then claim it's actually good because they're performing some sort of weird experiment on the masses.
Or they are the same people who watch soap operas and romance movies and go shopping for fun. I don't understand those people. This one really seems the most likely, but would imply those people are more numerous than I thought.
The thing I really wonder, though: how did the books make it past the editor and get published in the first place?

Why do I like it? Well, to start with my interest include playing otome games, and reading shoujo manga. I'm a girl, and that's what I like. Romance and good-looking guys are the type of things that interest me. I suppose that's why I like Twilight, I like reading about a romance with a hot guy.
It's not so different from the way guys look at "Playboy" and those type of magazines with half-naked/naked women. You guys like looking at naked pictures of girls, I like reading a romance with a good-looking guy.

Why was Sweet Valley High so popular?

I fixed it. My mistake. Not much reading going on I suppose.
Unless there are stories written on breasts/vaginas, no, not much reading going on.

But you could find those type of stuff in other big books. What scares me is that there doesn't seem to be any reason I can find for the relationship except that Edward loves Bella because she's...beautiful? I mean, it's like the same tragedy that occured between Romeo and Juliet only that there is nobody to tell them how naive both of them are.
No, that's not true at all. Edward finds Bella to be very unexceptional at first. In Midnight Sun, which was released as a partial draft and is basically Twilight from Edwards POV, he doesn't think Bella to be anything special in terms of looks. Main reason he becomes attracted to her is because her blood smells extremely appetizing to him, so much so that he barely finds the strength to keep himself from killing her when they first meet, and second, because he can't read her thoughts though he can read everyone elses.

So let me get the logic straight here He loves her because she is delicious.

Simmering Sexual Tension.
I loathed the books and kicked myself for reading the first one. But they speak to a certain age group or mindset that is all about the excitement before consummation. TWO hawt men who are only into you, who will play piano for hours without expecting sex, whose very touch inflames your soul, deep abidig passion with fidelity- etc- things that rarely happen in real life.
It is romantic fantasy with a twist because since he is all undead and stuff, it has the love that lasts beyond death thing going on.

Err, well...there is more to it then that. He also finds himself wanting to protect her. And they don't just fall in love right off the bat. He hates her at first because she nearly ruins the life his family has in Forks, but in some weird way he starts liking her. You'd really have to read the books to get it all...
