Did you know that twilight has caused some people to think they are vampires and some girls to think they are dark and alone when they are not??

Three words.

Simmering Sexual Tension.

I loathed the books and kicked myself for reading the first one. But they speak to a certain age group or mindset that is all about the excitement before consummation. TWO hawt men who are only into you, who will play piano for hours without expecting sex, whose very touch inflames your soul, deep abidig passion with fidelity- etc- things that rarely happen in real life.

It is romantic fantasy with a twist because since he is all undead and stuff, it has the love that lasts beyond death thing going on.

It's this. From what I gather a lot of the appeal is the ~*~ chaste longing ~*~ between Edward and Bella. It's apparently strong enough to cause people to overlook the creepy parts and the body horror that goes on in book 4.

Most books with a religious or agendic foundation don't really get into it until books 3 or 4.

Because many seems to have a outspoken fetish for vampires, that and they made a effort to modernize Romeo & juliet into a vampire teen hyped love drama?

Yeah but the Twihards are more fun at the moment Statulos. Plus I know a good deal of metal heads, and while they are nice guys and gals, I wouldn't want to be on their bad side.

Case in point then. But most of the metal heads I know IRL are fantasy and sci-fi fans. Lotta nerds like the brutal, crushing sounds of good metal.

I'm actually torn on this issue. No, really, I am. As a lit major and a decent human being (corny lol), I enjoy the fact that Twilight is getting people to read. I go to Comic Book Conventions, and my favorite thing there is just to look around and see people reading.

The balance of "at least they're reading" versus the content of what they are reading should really tilt a bit more towards the content than most people allow.  Honestly, if this were just tween girls reading it then it would probably not even be on anyone's radar.

It's the college age girls and the women in their thirties who read it and love it that bother me.  Why?  Why should I care what others enjoy?  I try not to.  I don't crusade over people drinking, or playing GTA, or listening to Rush Limbaugh - I really do my best to not.  But believing people should be allowed their choice of entertainment and being happy with what people choose are really two separate things.

But Twilight not only teaches very young kids that abusive relationships, settling for life as a submissive housewife, and being a ****tease are perfectly okay, but it also heavily pushed Mormon ideaology in a way that Narnia and Dark Materials mearly imply their roots.

I could care less about the "vampires don't sparkle" BS.

See, I'm more on the other end of the spectrum.  While I'm happy to let anyone enjoy Pullman or Lewis (regardless of whether they pull religious significance out of the stories or not), it's the deeper issue of "sparkly vampires" that bugs me the most.

"Sparkly vampires" are the too perfect - I've adopted that term to refer to anything that is presented as too good to be true.  Utopian, idealistic... Edward is, indeed, a sparkly vampire.  He's the tortured bad boy who just needs the love of a good woman, but he treats that woman like a princess and is perfect for her.

Romance novels are already porn for women, but when you stray into paranormal romance (vampires in particular) it feeds this meme of women wanting the guy who's bad for her, the one that just wants her for one thing (blood? sex?) and it also feeds the childish notion that she can change the bad boy (help him stop drinking blood or killing / settling down and treating her right.)

Each writer can make their own fictional world whatever they want.  If vampires glow in her story, fine, and if werewolves are actually pixies casting illusions, fine - but the paranormal romance trope of "changing the bad boy" is a dangerous one for women to fantasize about.

It's probably as bad as guys watching too much porn and thinking all girls really like what porn stars act like they love. <_<

I honestly will pay to watch the fourth film. You could not make that into a good film.

Haha, I'm try to figure out how they are going to do all the "Uh oh, I'm 3 months pregnant in 5 days" and "I needz to drink blood or else this baby is gonna kill me!". The story gets pretty...dramatic in the fourth book, and not very role modelish for the kids.

Why is Twilight so appealing?

I really don't think it is.

Okay, in seriousness, others have already said more or less what I would have said, so I'll just add this: I'm disinclined to even give the series points for making young people read.  I don't think that simply reading any old crap is a positive thing.  If you had a friend who used to be very anti-social, but later started going out and stabbing people in the streets, you wouldn't say "ah, at least he's getting out there and meeting people now."

Okay, yeah, bad analogy, but you know what I mean.  As for giving it credit for speaking to the youth of today, I don't buy that either.  There are plenty of good books capable of speaking to those youth, if they would simply read them instead of effing Twilight.

I'm actually not nearly as anti-Twilight as I probably sound right now.  Sometimes I get set off by the mention of something, but really, I understand that some people enjoy reading trashy things sometimes.  Personally, though, I have to draw a line somewhere.  When I feel like doing some light, mindless reading, I usually just hit up Wikipedia and go crazy with the article links.  I usually end up learning something, too (even if I didn't really care to learn it).

Exactly! Even Anne Rice vampires aren't completely nice. After all, Lestat goes around killing homeless people.

Reminds me of Alien. Of course, the final result will be cheesy.

Absolutely! Just so long as you can recognize it for what it is. ;)

I really enjoyed reading Harry Potter. But the technical quality of writting is terrible. :wizard:

The sparkly bit is also very literal:

Also, the real problem are the people reading it:

I think more people may be in need of therapy than they realize.

Okay. Here we go again. Deep breath.

Twilight is a really great book and just because you guys can't get over that for once not something testosterone filled or generally more of male intrest is popular like, LoTR and Rush Hour 12, that's your own problem. I loved the book and hated the second movie, the first one I adore, there is nothing wrong with them, all you people saying that it's mormon propaganda and mind **** for girls should just read any other romance novel and see that it's pretty much the same thing only without vampires. Geez,
