I can understand why they wouldn't include Dog. Some people like him, but I don't find him interesting or much more useful than the other party members, and I'd much rather take a new fully-developed character with interesting dialogue and side-quests over an animal whose key personality trait is "smelling bad".

His voice actor is too expensive for expansions.

It reminds me of the pre-movie "it takes only one call to ruin a movie" thing they run in many theatres where the agent is negotiating on behalf of the chimp actor for residuals. And what's even funnier is the agent negotiating was the station doctor from Deep Space Nine.

I always figured the "voice" bits for Dog was the pet of somebody on the design team. Dog's pleading whine reminds me of my aunt's dog.

Well -- if he's dead (no preplayers have said yet whether or not that's so) -- Mabari bond with their owners for life, but I don't think it works the flip way for the owners. You can always get another dog (in another expansion). Or maybe a new pet. People seem to be rooting for a griffin.

If he's not -- well, again, nothing's ruling out a return.

except that according to the reviews this is the last adventure for your origins character

Has anyone really confirmed that?

From what I can tell, the Morrigan story arc is untouched by the expansion. (Well, one game-hating ending-playing douchebag seems to have hinted you may get a hint of her at the end but it's not her. I guess I should put a spoiler warning on it, except I have no idea whether it is or not.)

Thus ... seems to remain open to resolution in further expansions and/or sequels.

Now ... that would be bizarre, indeed, if the GW character must die in this one (as opposed to taking it as a choice), and even IF there was no romance or god-baby.

The ending for the Awakenings story is rumored to be abrupt. I don't know if that's the end of the story of "The Warden" as a whole, though.

This.

Granted I actually loved dog. But, I never used him. The extent of his usage never really went past Lothering or the random moments where I made him pee on a landmark or fetch for something 'interesting'. Really, dog not being a companion is not a big loss. I can understand a small disappointment of him not being there, but oh well.

As an explanation for where he is during Awakening. I can imagine leaving him with a past love interest while I go save the world again. lol He can hang around Alistair and fetch him more cheese from the larder.

One of the nice things about dog was that if you were willing to use the console command zz_addparty to exceed the party limit, he still integrated very nicely into nearly all of the cut scenes and the interparty dialogues that would sometimes occur (eg. the alter in Haven). The same couldn't be said for most of the other characters added that way. The only thing you couldn't do was select skills for him to use during combat. But given how small his skill tree was, it was pretty easy just to set him on tactics and let him use his fast movement rate and overwhelm skill to deal with annoying mages and archers on his own. You just had to make sure you removed him manually whenever the game stripped your other three companions from you.  Otherwise his remaining while you were supposed to be solo'ing could cause problems.

Let me also add that having looked over quite a few of the cut scenes with the toolset, it appears to me that originally the 3 character party limit wasn't intended to apply to dog. It was only at some point later down the road in the development that the limit was applied to dog because he is explicitly included in nearly every scene if he is present, in addition to the three other companions you have chosen to accompany you.

And you could've totally ruined Oggy's chances with Felsi and made him hate you so much he quit the party for good. And yet suddenly you find out that he has a child that was born only 6 months after Origins and named it after you? LOL! Dog not coming back had nothing to do with it being possible to kill him.  A decision was made to place an emphasis on creating new characters over bringing back old characters. The development team didn't have the resources to both create a new batch of characters -and- bring all of the old characters back.  So they didn't. Oggy got brought back because he was a favorite of some of the developers and because they felt that he didn't have enough time to shine in Origins since given the way the game was designed, most people didn't hit the Deep Roads until nearly the end of the game.

No matter what you do, Oghren is still alive though. Dog can be killed as soon as you meet him.

I've said it before elsewhere that I think they should have brought ALL the characters back or NONE of them. We all have our faves and while I get the Oghren people are so very happy, I think it's kind of outweighed by the unhappiness inflicted on the Dog/Zevran/Leliana/Shale/Sten/etc./etc people...

this.

Allowing to import a savegame was a big mistake by Bioware. So many feel disappointed because of their missing faves or lovers (Lel, Dog and Shale in my case (in that order)). Would be WAY better to just start as a new warden in another land, then "continue" to play "your" hero which lacks almost all of his friends.

I for one will start a new game instead of continue playing "my" hero without a choice who I will able to meet. Or skip the preorder at all (Euro here).

I agree with this, yet I really do enjoy my Mage and have her tweaked just the way I want - so from the standpoint of being able to be up and running with a fine-tuned character, I'm glad I can import her.

I think it's pretty clear that Dog is virtually a canine Grey Warden himself. Otherwise he'd never have survived a full year of biting darkspawn. I also wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the herb that was used to heal him wasn't a major ingredient in the Joining Ritual formula as well. He didn't seem sick at all at the end. In fact he appeared pretty chipper. So somehow I don't think he'd have just keeled over and died after the fighting ended.

Yo that's right! He should have had glowing/steaming eyes as well, like the Warden in the Sacred Ashes trailer. We all should have had glowing/steaming eyes, actually....

They advertised Return to Ostagar with:

- a second chance to recruit Dog into the party.

I call him DLC and he Should be included as such. Honestly, I never used him much, for lack of dialogue, but he was with me my entire game. Ever since we fought that HORDE of kitchen larder rats that were assaulting the castle Cousland. Ah, good times...

They could have at least made him appear as a cameo. I could tell him to keep my NEW keep free of vermin, and let him guard my home.

Doesn't matter. No returning character should be forced on you in a way that breaks story continuity, and that includes Oghren as well as Dog. It would have been pretty simple to have created a conditional where Dog would only be back if he were still alive, not that there are a whole lot of people who actually killed Dog off. To say one plot hole is bigger than the other is silly because there doesn't need to be any plot holes if they'd just give the developers a bit more in the way of resources. But regardless, even if Dog's return were to be forced on the player much as Oghren's is,  far fewer players killed Dog in their games than ruined Oggy's romance with Felsi. So bringing Oggy back actually causes plot holes in far more games than bringing Dog back would have.

Instead of a dog you have a 9 lives cat in this game. You can't have everything.
