Who are in your opinion the top five game developers.

And if you know of any indie developers you can make a separate top list of them as well.

In no particular order. I will list my reasons for them being on the list.

Blizzard: Marketing powerhouse and dominator of two genres. Granted, their games are eclipsed by other companies but Blizzard makes the list for the shear number of people that play their games.

Bioware: Quality work no matter what. Works with an emphasis on story driven games over the fast paced action that has taken control of the market.

Nival Interactive: I nominate them for their amazing Silent Storm series. An underated game like Jagged Alliance with fully destructable environment. Sadly I have to use old graphics drivers to actually run the games now.

Bullfrog: I miss this company. Even though Lionhead is its successor, I miss games such as Syndicate Wars and Dungeon Keeper. Those were some of my favorite games as a kid.

Black Isle
: Fallout. That is all that needs to be said.

Honorable Mentions:

Vicious Cycle: My brother works there. :P

EDIT: ... 4 out of 5 companies start with a B.... coincidence?

Oh, such a hard question. I don't think I can even get five.

Bethesda
Bioware
I suppose Bungie or Infinity Ward....
Troika, before they went down.
Black Isle, also prior to dissolution.

Yay, I did it! Even if two of them are dead. XD

EDIT: AH! I noticed the B-thing too. Weird, that.

No order, but my five favorites would have to be, and my favorite games of theirs:

BioWare: Mass Effect and KotOR mainly

Valve: The Half Life Series and Left 4 Dead

Ubisoft: Assassin's Creed, GRAW 1&2, PoP: Sands of Time, and Splinter Cell.

Bethesda: Morrowind and Oblivion are good, but Fallout 3 is my favorite RPG so far.

Creative Assembly: The Total War games of Rome, Barbarian Invasion, Medieval II, Kingdoms, and Empire.

These are my favorite game developers
-Bethesda (Elder Scrolls are among my favorite games)
-BioWare (I don't think I need to explain)
-Bungie (Halo: CE is my favorite shooter)
-Raven (I loved SW: Jedi Outcast)
-Pandemic (BF 1 & 2)

Since Battlefront, KOTOR, Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy came out basically around the same time (2002-2003), I think it goes without saying that I was a big Star Wars guy. :P

Current top 5 would be:

Blizzard
- they make no mistakes, love their RTS games the most
BioWare - very much like Blizzard, made some of the finest RPGs ever
ArenaNet - Guild Wars and GW2 in works, great tech support
Obsidian - NWN2 and KotOR2, also loved the games made by these people before they formed Obsidian... looking forward to new Fallout if they are really making it
Bethesda - Fallout 3 maybe was Oblivion with guns but it was great fun, very much like all the stuff they made in last ten years

Two devlopers that come very close:

CD Projekt Red - The Witcher, TW2 in works... best RPG I played in years
Infinity Ward - Call of Duty WWII games, my favorite FPS, also fantastic multiplayer

Older:

Troika, Black Isle - made some legendary games

BioWare - quality products with a high level polish every time.
Insomniac - innovative game design and a quirky sense of humour.
Zipper Interactive - because MechWarrior 3, and Crimson Skies (PC) were that good.
Valve - great technical design, and quality game design.
Massive Entertainment - one of the few companies out their with enough balls to do something new in the RTS genre

Nintendo because of their once greatness.

Bioware as obvious.

Squaresoft-Enix because of their sometimes thrilling RPG mechanics. Just wish they'd move on a bit more from the random encounter thing.

Ubisoft for a lot of great games.

Rockstar Games for some of the best freeworld games and inspiring other studios to pick up and do the same thereby producing such wonderful titles as Saints Row 2. So, honorable mentions to Volition studios.

Bioware, Blizzard, Bethesda -- The three B's. :P Ubisoft is right up there with them. Microprose made some great games as well (xcom and civilization were real classics).

Ubisoft Montreal - they are responsible for some of the best games that came out in the last few years.

Obsidian - I love their games.

Not in any specific order:

Blizzard- they have been a powerhouse since the first Diablo.

Sqare Enix- A developer that has dared to go wild more than most developers. Many of there projects have been real hit and miss but there flagship franchise (final fantasy) has always been in a league of there own.

Ubisoft- Assassin's Creed, prince of persia need I say more?

Bioware- Because these games have been making me sleep ever since KoTOR

Bethesda-  responsible for two games they kept me so distracted with side missions that can never finish the plot and I imagine there will be many more where that came from.

and I have to mention  Interplay, because of stonekeep and for contributions they have made of the years. may they rest in peace. (I know they are back, that just are not the same anymore.)

In no particular order: Bioware - great story driven games, played them all to death; Obsidian - I love their games even if they have their faults; Blizzard - while their stories are utter crap, the polish is beyond excellence and their games almost completely bug-free; Crystal Dynamics - I loved the Legacy of Kain series; Valve - for the Half Life games and Portal
