I don't pay much attention in it, the only game developer I've been following is Bioware, so I can be forgetting someone.

Rockstar: Peen and Gay Tony DLC. The world will never be the same again.
Naughty Dog: Uncharted series. Drake, the first male protagonist I haven't instantly hated upon playing a game. And is easy on the eyes. Also, it has awesome chicks doing awesome things without the 'poor me, I need help' or 'I am a woman, I can do everything myself' spiel.
Ubisoft: They definitely know how to do PR. Their poetic trailer music videos are the BEST. New Prince of Persia and Assassin's Creed series.
Funcom: Longest Journey and The Secret World. I love their mythologies in games, it usually goes beyond the tide of what other games are doing and makes it a little more special.

Microprose (X-COM UFO, Transport Tycoon)
Blue Byte (Settlers series)
Blizzard (Starcraft)
Black Isle (Fallout 1-2, Icewind Dale)
Honourable mention (because they had only one game) : CD Projekt Red

Blizzard (best real time strategy games imho, and classic wow was really fun. Also, I wasted my youth with playing Diablo II)
Black Isle/Obsidian (counting it as the same developer here, I know that this is, strictly speaking, not true - PS:T, Icewind Dale I and KOTORII are my favourites here (shame on me, I never played fallout))
Valve (mainly because of Portal, but I also like Left4Dead when I am playing at LANs - and they will start working together with the current developer of DotA Allstars, Icefrog, so this will make them even more amazing)
Now the last slot is hard... Ubisoft, Microsoft Games or Microprose. Can't really decide. Ubisoft has done Heroes of Might&Magic 3, Microsoft Games has done Age of Empires 2 and Freelancer, Micropose has done Master of Orion II. All these are amazing games.

Exact same for me.SovereignSith44 wrote...
No order, but my five favorites would have to be, and my favorite games of theirs:
BioWare: Mass Effect and KotOR mainly
Valve: The Half Life Series and Left 4 Dead
Ubisoft: Assassin's Creed, GRAW 1&2, PoP: Sands of Time, and Splinter Cell.
Bethesda: Morrowind and Oblivion are good, but Fallout 3 is my favorite RPG so far.
Creative Assembly: The Total War games of Rome, Barbarian Invasion, Medieval II, Kingdoms, and Empire.

Kojima Productions: MGS. ZOE
Atlus: Persona, Nocturne
NIS: Disgaea
SE: FF, KH, DQ, PE
Hmmmm, too hard to pick the fifth spot. Too many devs to consider

2K studios: Bioshock and hopefully to the same degree of excellence Bioshock 2.
Rockstar: GTA series, plus other great titles.
Square-Enix: I'm enamored with their stuff myself, so I'm definitely both a western and eastern RPGer.
Konami/Kojima Productions: Metal Gear Solid series. I'm a huge fan.
Edit: Haha funny you say that, RurouniSaiya-jin. I was beginning to worry I was the only one who would mention the Japanese developers.

lol, I was a bit worried when posting my list too, especially since I think I'm the only one who didn't put Bioware in their list. I've only played 2 Bioware games and I didn't enjoy the second game (Mass Effect) as much as others so it's hard to put them on the list. Though after Dragon Age, I get the feeling they'll be taking that fifth spotArkeseth wrote...

Bioware comes in second because while they have made several fantastic games, they have also made a couple I didn't care for.
Valve comes in third because they've made several great games, and they don't come any higher because they still support Counter Strike. Also, stiff competition…
Black Isle comes in fourth.
I debated it, but decided LucasArts deserved the fifth spot because while they have been a very mixed bag, quality-wise, they did develop some wonderful games during the 80's and 90's.

Bioware: already stated why
Nintendo: established legends of the gaming industry
RARE: Banjo-Kazooie, viva pinata etc. all well priced and extremely well made
Ubisoft Montreal: splinter cell, prince of persia, I had my faith shaken with Assassin's Creed, hopefully they make up for that disaster with the sequel.
Bungie: Now I'm not a shooter fan but I have to admit that Bungie makes quality games. I don't let the extremely childish community tarnish a fantastic game, especially Halo CE.
Others:
Black Isle: Legends among rpg fans. It's a shame they went under, Troika and Obsidian have not been able to measure up.
Bethesda: Before Oblivion, they would have been in my top five. If they can find their way back to making real rpg's then I'll change my mind. They're in here due to Morrowind.
Blizzard: It was between RARE or Blizzard. Blizzard is much more successful and they are by far the best at rts. However they created a monster with WoW, it's a plague to the mmo genre.
Ensemble: 2nd in line behind Blizzard in rts, they sold out with Halo Wars, I tried to like it but it really is a bad game. A shame to go out on such a low note.

Bioware
Atlus
SquareEnix (especially the tri-ace made games.)
Kojima Productions (more for ZOE than MGS)
NamcoBandai (specifically the Tales and .Hack teams)
Honourable Mentions in no particular order:
Valve
Ubisoft Montreal (except the ending of Assassin's Creed. A futuristic artefact in the time of the third crusade was a huge immersion breaker)
CD Projekt Red (I've only played the Witcher so they had to be bumped for developers who've made more games I've played)
Insomniac (particularly the Ratchet & Clank games)
Gust/NIS (NIS is just the localizer on most if not all of their games)

Perhaps that's where some other companies are going wrong? XD
Still, all the suggestions so far have been good, with the reasons behind the suggestions making me agree with some companies where I wouldn't have before...

1. Nintendo - around for 150 years and counting
2. Blizzard - their games seem to stand the test of time, relatively
3. Valve - didn't make the first FPS, but they certainly improved upon the genre, and continue to do so
4. Rockstar - for rocking the boat and pushing the limits of what some may have seen as being acceptable and unacceptable for games
5. Bioware - (of course) for the excellent story-driven experiences and characterizations
So, my criteria for the top 5 were developers who've not only pushed and innovated the genre of gaming, but who've also made great games and continue to do so.

Bethesda to me will come a short second to those 3.
Otherwise Valve for giving indie gamers a great go. And honorary Blizzard mention for making really addictive, polished and most important money-producing games.
For Indies at this stage, I'm really liking Machinarium's Amanita Design and World of Goo's 2D Boy.
