In no particular order as well. . .

BioWare: Loved them ever since BG, still my favorite RPG. Its like playing a book!

Obsidian: I really enjoyed NWN2 and KotOR2. I actually liked the story of KotOR2 better than the original, granted it was broken. And the NWN2 engine was just win.

Valve: This was a triumph. I'm making a note here, huge success. . . .

Bethesda: I really liked the Elder Scrolls games. I liked where they were going with the leveling system - its creative, unique and awesome! (but yes, tweaks needed)

Blizzard: I hate them, yet I love them. . . SC2 is my next major awaited release.

Blizzard
Bioware
BlackIsle
ArenaNet
3DO

The first three are all on an unparalleled level of excellence.
Personal pet peeve: Bethesda. I hate all their shallow, empty, unpolished games.

Current:
BioWare (all their games (except Sonic, haven't played))
Funcom (TLJ series)
Obsidian (KotOR2 and MotB were good, NWN2 was okay, looking forward to AP (eventually))
Telltale Games (for renewing the Monkey Island franchise. Also looking forward to playing Wallace and Gromit and Homestarrunner games eventually)
Ubisoft (for the Prince of Persia games, primarily, but I liked AC and several others, as well)

Of all-time:
Sierra (Quest for Glory and Gabriel Knight, primarily, but so many others as well)
BioWare
Black Isle
LucasArts (for Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, MM/DotT, plus Dark Forces, and for publishing the other DF games and another couple of games (plus MMO soon) I could mention)
Looking Glass (Thief)

I support Bioware and Square Enix.

"rating" the top 5 developer houses is nearly impossible. What measurements do you use? What timeline? What Genre's? What platform? I mean in some of your lists "id software" would rank very highly I suspect.

Even in my own limited choices I am conflicted. I have played a great number of Square Enix titles but their insistence on questioning moral foundations has disturbed me more than a few times (see Drakenguard2). Bioware's second expansion to Neverwinter Nights comes to mind as well ;)

-Bioware (For the many hours I've sunk into their captivating games)

-Double Fine (I love Tim Schafer's ingenious style, Brugal Legbone!)

-Black Isle

-Troika

-Elixir Studios (for Republic and Evil Genius)

What can I say, I like me rpgs

Honorable Mentions

-Lionhead Studios (I spent a week doing some work experience with them, really nice folks)

-Rockstar (for the Red Dead series)

-Lucasarts (good ol' adventure games)

1 Bioware

2 Blizzard

3 Valve

4 Firaxis

5 Troika

Loved the Prince of Persia series, didn't like Assassins Creed so Ubisoft just miss out. If Troika were still in business they would probably be higher.

BioWare

Quantic Dream

Maxis

Remedy

Rare

Five developers I trust..if one announces a new project, I know it's worth following. Well, not Rare recently, but I've got a bit of hope left.

Westwood is, or was, good as well. Forgot about them. Bungie, now that's another 'B.' I'm surprised at the lack of Microprose love... only a few fellow fans out there.

Bioware
Maxis
Westwood, then and now. (Well then more.)
EA? Do they still even develop games or just publish them now?
THQ, although wasn't big fan of DoW 2.

Current Top-Five:
Bethesda for Elder Scroll series and Fallout 3.
BioWare for the obvious reasons which are obvious.
Valve for Half Life series, L4D series and Steam.
Ubisoft Montreal for Splinter Cell series and Assassin's Creed.
Obsidian for all the sequels they have made following BioWare's games.

Disbanded Favorites:
Bullfrog It's a pity that we shall never see Dungeon Keeper 3.
Black Isle Although Fallout 3 by Bethesda is epic, I always wanted the original F3 to release.

The Kicked Ones:
ActBlizzard After all those founding members leaving, and merging with Activision, Blizzard has turned from an all time favorite into nothing more than a commerical brand.
Lionhead I loved the games Lionhead made, it is after all the "new" Bullfrog. Ever since joining Microsoft however, Lionhead has pretty much departed from the PC platform and my taste.
