Have the LIs return and a few other characters and you'll have something comparable to ME2. Not necessarily going to a span a million disks.
I sometimes find it amusing how we all sit here and try to speculate like we know all about what Bioware is thinking about right now, what exactly they'll do and what will or won't happen.
I admit, I have little insight into this beyond common sense, which can only get you so far without some inside knowledge. I don't know what their budget is, their resource commitment, how far back they had this planned out, the contracts they've signed, the allocation of resources and the hows and whys of resource distribution, what gets saved or not according to time and money, or how much effort they've committed to putting into this game at all.

I'm not really saying that they will do x. This thread is really just trying to dispell the notion that many people seem to have that it's impossible or unreasonable to think that Bioware may bring back some of the squad mates (if not all). Bioware said that the ME1 romance characters will have a large role in addition to saying that it will be "interesting" for players to see how the stories of the existing squad mates end up and develop. The latter part was from a recent gameinformer interview of Casey Hudson. So we've got an indication that at the very least we'll find out what happens to these characters.
I agree with this.
I am often encouraged by their remark that ME3 will be the time when they can really let loose and go all out, let everything play itself out as it should, with a certain freedom.
My only expected disappointment is that they will very likely not be able to individualize the drama of LI confrontations very much at all, considering all the possible permutations (has anyone counted them all?). This is quite understandable, though.

In fact, it would probably be easier to implement the old ones than to make new ones.

Yep. There are a ton of threads discussing squadmates for ME3, speculating who will or won't return, but based on no real information. I can understand why people are arguing about this ad infinitum - they care a lot about the characters, and want to know what's going to happen to them. But the most concrete thing we have so far are some statements by Casey Hudson, which are somewhat ambiguous, yet people are arguing with such vitriol.

And romance subplots being subplots, it's unnecessary to pit ME1 LIs against ME2 LIs on the same Normandy, or whatever the ship Joker will fly...
That's how I think it will play out:
ME1 LIs get recruited and privided there was no cheating on them, they quickly fall back in love with Sheprd, who can accept that with joy, or tell them "sorry, darling, I have moved on".
If there was cheating, the ME1 LI gets indignant: "Son of a **** you cheated!" Now, Shepard has to re-conquer the LI, or, yet again tell them he did move on.
Then, towards the end of the game, ME2 LIs (if alive) cameo and aside from other important business behind each particular cameo, Shepard can either confirm the romantic involvement, or tell them he moved on, resulting in a happy or indignant character.
And finally, there are Kelly, Gianna and Shiala, that may win Shepard's eventual favor over both ME1 and ME2 LIs.

That's only a half true. It will be harder to stuff up the old ones with meaningful interaction, than the new ones.

Does this mean your ME2 LI ultimately only shows up toward the end of the game and gets only a cameo?
Pah. I disparage your plan, sir. I disparage it! I want my LI to be a squadmate! This is the final installment! NO CAMEOS.
Plus I think if you romanced no one in ME1 but did romance someone in ME2 they're likely to continue your ME2 LI into ME3 definitely, meaning this eventuality lends more likelihood to them being prominent in ME3, period.

All LIs are coming back plus Legion and Grunt. Mordin should be working on something - maybe saving the Drell. SAVE THE DRELL. They are going to instinct you know. But nobody cares.
The Drell are not going to become extinct, as their disease takes on them in the later portion of their lives. It does not hamper reproduction. And the Hanar do care. Mordin, if made it back from the Collector base, has more important things to focus on. Review Chorban&Jalid's research into the Keepers, for starters. He always wanted to study them himself.

That's the case of *my* Shepard. He had no romantic involvment with his crew in ME1. He sleeps with Miranda now. For lulz. But his true love is Gianna Parasini.

It would be interesting if at the end Jack and miranda are best friends or Tali and Legion . You know like Gimli and Legolas thing.

What I think would be great if they make more interaaction between squadmates. Like that fight between Jack and Miranda and Tali and Legion. If all squadmates return they don't have to create stories about them anymore and concentrate on interlelationship. They could make the characters grow a little more. I think that was their plan from the beggining. That is why most of us like some characters and hate others.

Agreed. I'm in full support of this, I thirst for squad interaction.
Dragon Age, Bioware. I'm going to say it until you're sick of it and want to scream.

Thane is 39. That is not later in life is in the middle. And most of them die from this desease. There is only half a million of them. And if they don't find the cure soon they are going to extinct.

He has a grown-up son by his 39. He could have had 10 chilren, or 20. But he was always away on business. Doesn't mean other Drells are not reproducing rabbit-style. I bet the Hanar aren't willing to lose all their Compact partners. It's bad for business. So don't you worry so much about Drell extinction. You want to cure them? Fine. But don't lie other people into it by your Green Peace BS!

Yes! I have faith in them! They always devote such personal attention to things like this, giving each person their own individual experience. Just look what they did with the ME1 LIs...oh, wait. That's right, I almost forgot.
Why is it that no one sees the writing on the wall?
