Choose wherever you like. Apparently the encounters scale to your level to a degree, so it doesn't matter too much where you choose. I did Warden's Keep and then picked up Shale. Currently in Orzammar.

you can always go to denerim and buy gear/do random quests here and there, then go to the dalish elves/brecilian forest area. I personally wouldn't recommend exploring denerim anywhere south of the pearl because some of the gangs tend to overwhelmed me (should be easier with some more skills), and i had a much easier time taking on the wolves and skeletons in dalish quest at the same level (with same party)

I went to Redcliffe right after Lothering. There was a time I regretted my decision, about 1/2 way thru the towns missions. I don't want to ruin anything, but when you get to this point use a bottleneck strategy and it should go fine. Took me 5 tries before I figured this out. Then again, I'm a total noob. As Eurypterid stated, the difficulty is tailored to your character level.

Went to DLC Wardens Keep to get my storage chest, blacksmith ect (like another camp after you finish the quest) then completed Broken Circle.
Next, probably Arl because of the number of side quests, vendors loot etc.

BTW-- the order of main quests don't really effect the storyline.

I got Shale then did Warden's Keep before going to Redcliff. Just finished off the main quests there and will probably do some side quests around the town before heading back to the Keep and then either go to Denerim or do a couple other side quests I still have.

From my limited experience, it seems the story is written in such a way that you have some freedom on the order you complete, but can't get to part 3 without completing all of part 2....and so on. So if the areas are available to you they are either plot areas or side quests. I don't believe you can mess up the order....Bioware did a good job with that.
