Where is the black vial in the Denerim Back Alley?  I have been all over all three alleys and have not found it.

it's a 'random' when traveling around there through the back alleys

It's a random encounter, it's just to your left as you enter it. I think it's the one where the bandits have laid the trap with the falling gate.

It's the random encounter with the gate that lowers, cutting you off from your party.

The vial is right next to where you enter the area, so do that first before going down the steps to fight the bandits.

If you miss that encounter and didn't get the vial I think you're SoL. That happened to me on my first playthrough.

Is there any benefit for getting all six vials?

Codex entries and reward from the Revenants as well as some 900 XP (150 each Revenant)... other than that, none I know.

Nope, just flavor, which is quite disapointing.

I was hoping we'd get a bit more explanation as to the codex entries. There are hints there about something going on, but you never really get the full picture.
