But yeah, the atmosphere is excellent. I never found Grout's Mansion particularly scary but the tapes left behind... Wow, the writing and acting there is amazingly well done.
The snuff tape quest is extremely creepy and even though it's not really that... shocking any more or whatever, the whole thing still packs a good punch. Hunting around for the two tapes are the best parts of the quest IMO.
All in all, I think Bloodlines shows how important something as undefinable as atmosphere can be in a game. The game has so many design decisions that I just *loathe*, and yet I keep coming back to it. And much of it has to do with the oppressive atmosphere.
Scariest game though? The first Penumbra and the first part of the second Penumbra I think. I'm also 26, thought I'd gotten over being *scared* of videogames. But these games really scared the crap out of me when I first played them. The next game by the same developer is coming this Autumn, can't wait to try it.

I remember the first one though because my dad played it when it came out. It was on like 10 thousand CDs. I never really got into it but one thing I noticed was that it was unbelievably violent.

Oh, oh I forgot! It may be an old game but its fun and scary, kind of.. the atmosphere is awesome, the story breathtaking.
THIEF The dark project.
You play a master thief in a medieval-steampunkish setting, its heavily based on stealth.
Here is a briefing from a great mission:
The haunted cathedral
And the mission
Creepy, creepy level with incredible atmosphere.

Kind of fun for all the ridiculous things that happen and 2-ton ham acting, but definitely not scary or remotely horrifying.

Without a doubt, System Shock 2 is up there. Honestly, I bought the game when it came out. I bought the best damn sound card, the best headphones, and I was playing it one night. This game has the best “sound” and “dialogue” of all time..it’s so damn creepy.
Next is the “Cradle level” from Thief 3, although Thief 1 and Thief 2 were superior games. But man, that orphanage level is one of the craziest and scariest levels I have seen to date.
Clive Barker’s Undying….I got it when it first came out and the graphics were considered awesome.
Parts of American McGee Alice were unsettling.
Playing as the Marine in “Aliens Vs Predator 2”. One of the best single-player campaigns. Very riveting.
I would have to say Fatal Frame 2 was also very frightening. It’s not so much that the game is scary but rather…well…I’m kind of weird..in that if I play video games for a very long time..I start to dream about them. And it’s not good dreaming about this game. I’ve never completed the game because it messed with my sleep.
Condemned 1.
Parts of the game “Sanitarium”
Silent Hill 2
F.E.A.R 1
Penumbra Overture

It's pretty dated now but it will provide a good scare if you play it at night with the lights turned off.

Phantasmagoria II? lol that game was a comedy more than anything else.

The story was creepy. The fact that everyone died in amazing ways cracked me up to no end, though.
Sanitarium was also scary.
I have issues with being locked up, what can I say...

For those who don't know, it's stylized after H.P Lovecraft stories. But there are two reasons the game is unsettling and scary. First, the game jumps around in time to about a dozen heroes, each in different time periods, with different weapons. Some live, some die. It's kinda cool.
Second: Your character has a hallucination meter. When it rises, you see things that are not really there. For example, some characters have visions of the future, some the room progressivly shrinking, at other times the game messes with you and says your controller is unplugged. Very cool stuff.
The runner up scariest game for me was the original Alone in the Dark. I played it when I was like 8 years old, and it's a very creepy game.

The scariest game is probably Eternal Darkness for the gamecube.

Good choice. Eternal Darkness was my favorite Gamecube game. Call of Cthulu tried to do something similar to Eternal Darkness's sanity meter but it didn't pull it off nearly as well.

Unfortunately i've never actually been scared from a scene from a game but i have jumped a lot when playing FEAR 1 and FEAR 2... and that usually made me anxious to continue playing. Good games though - loses its appeal after the first playthrough, just isn't the same when you're expecting it.
I Feel the same about it
Doom 3 was that way for me, but I quicky got over it, as switching to the flash light constantly made it more annoying then scary for me.

F.E.A.R. was scary, especially at first. I remember going through an air duct or something and that little **** started running towards me out of nowhere. I screamed so loud.
F.E.A.R. 2 was pretty scary too. I couldn't play past a certain point because it was too scary, but I was playing one day with my friend, and I was at the hospital you wake up in after all the explosions. I went into a bathroom to explore what was in it and what not, and when I turned around anorexic+naked Alma was right behind me. We both screamed...
I'm not good with things jumping out at me.
