sadly, none of the silent hill games scare me the way they did the first i played them through. SH1, and SH3 were exceptional IMO. I love Silent Hill 3 the most. I played it  for 2 days straight and it is seriously a warped game. I really enjoyed it but I tried to play it again years later and it really doesn't do anything for me anymore. Nor do any of the more recent SH titles.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth.

Getting chased by Deep Ones & a Shoggoth, fighting Flying Polyps... one of the most harrowing gaming experiences out there.

I thought Dead Space was pretty good, but it was more startles than scares as has been mentioned a few times.

As mentioned before, the Haunted Hotel in Vampire: Bloodlines.

Alien vs Predator 2, playing as a marine, in a dark room with surround sound.

Bioshock, when entering Rapture for the first time.

Fallout 3, coming to the Grizzly Diner during night time.

A lot of MMOs. It scares me a LOT how people can forget about their real lives and wave epeens in your face ;)

Although im not much into such games i agree the quest at the hotel in vampire the masquerade bloodlines was very creepy. Although overal the most scary game i played was project zero for PS2. At least i found it pretty scary back then. Im sure there are much more frightening games out there these days like dead space is a good example.

honestly the silent hill series scares the crap out of me. both 2 and 3 had some amazing moments that made me have to leave the console for awhile.

shattered memories is more shock value with loud noises and what not, but it just gets too annoying to find scary.

apart from the SH games fallout 3 had some seriously terrifying moments while venturing through the metro tunnels at lower levels.

Did you ever got to the Dunwich Building?

That game was terrifying for all the wrong reasons.  true horror masterpiece. Zeld: The Wand of Gamelon wasn't too shabby either, far as unadulterated horror goes. :D

Might & Magic IX

It was so bad that it scared me. It was like playing these first 5 minutes and knowing that the series died with that one (which turned out true, at least for the RPG part of the series).

Besides that I assume some darker dungeon parts of FO3 and the Marine in the first AvP PC FPS got me a bit jumpy.. but not really scared.

No, Gary. I've just seen it played first hand. I've owned just about every fringe system *except* a CDi. I've owned a 3DO, Jaguar, Neo Geo, Sega CD, and Laseractive at various stages of my teenage years... but never a CDi.

Ooh. Scary games. Umm... I played Oblivion in a dark room once. Running through Oblivion gates and having Dremora jump out of NOWHERE at you... pretty freaky. At least, it was terrifying the first time I played, since I didn't know what was coming.

The first Mass Effect terrified me the first time I played it. Even now, a bazillion playthroughs later, the Thorian creepers scare the hell out of me. And husks. OH MAKER THE HUSKS!! *cowers in a corner with a shotgun*

Darkfall: The Journal

A detective old-school style adventure game (think along the lines of Myst) that is probably the most atmospheric game I have ever played. Really needs to be played in a dark room on a stormy night for maximum effect. You'll never see a single character, but you'll keep expecting one to appear at any moment.

Dead Space was not scary. At all. You're a wuss if you disagree.

However, all the F.E.A.R. games, as well as all the Condemned games were terrifying. I loved that about them.

Eternal Darkness was also frightening once the insanity meter got high enough.

The 7th Guest was creepy. Spine tinglingly so.

when I was young there was a video game spin off of "101 dalmations" the game got pretty difficult... and the enemies were so hard to destroy that they scared me... a lot. I don't think any game could compare to that in terms of scariness
