PC Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 @ 2.33 Ghz, memory 2gb , XP Sp3
Videocard: Nvidia 8600 GTS

After about 5 minutes of playing ME2 game freezes. After several minutes it unfreezes back for a bit so I can hit windows tab or smth  but whole 3d video is corrupted, I cannot see anything. If I manage to drop Me2 client with сntrl-alt-delete, 3d video for all other games (and ME2  too) is still corrupted -  PC reset needed.

PC runs absolutely good with all other games like ME1, DAO, Fallout 3

I tried different solutions like:
- updated video driver to the latest one (196.21)
- downloaded and installed single core solution (although I have duo)
- re-installed the game
nothing helps

Any advise would be great. Thanks in advance

Temperatures you are seeing while this is happening? (And please don't ask ME how to get a thermal monitoring utility; that's what Google and Yahoo are for.)

yeah, Gorath i tried that. With a usual temperature on my video card about 60 c, I hit about 95 and more with ME2

Your video card's fan is not working correctly. If you are using the bad Geforce driver, 196.75, get rid of that. The fan control mechanism works backwards, and the official nVIDIA site advises not to use it. There are other Geforce drivers from the past three years (since the 8n00s were brand new) that were "somewhat bad" in that regard before, but not like 196.75!

Ya, thats no good unless your trying to turn the card into slag. Turn the fan speed up using EVGA Precision control center ( free download) and try to keep the core temps below 80. Personally I don't like mine over 70.

@Heartworm

I'm catching this issue too every now and then on my Toshiba Qosmio X300 when I run it in Balanced or High Performance modes, where the system locks with a sound loop and a black screen. It's also happened with other games (Crysis & L4D being the biggest offenders).

Nvidia System Monitor showed me what was wrong: my CPU is hitting ~110'C with the 9800GTX hitting 120'C right before the system dies according to my logs.

My bet is Sinister316 is right on the money. I'm getting my laptop serviced under warranty to have new thermal paste and replacement fans applied (EVGA Precision didn't solve the problem for me; I think I'm past the point of quick fixes), but if you're having the same problem as suspected and you're using a desktop: consider a better heatsink/fan rig on your graphics card or overall better cooling for your desktop.

A common $20.00 fan is keeping me safe for now below 80'C. :D

I thought the one that use was good for ME2 http://www.nvidia.co...96.21_whql.html

see? it mentions ME2 support in its description

Driver 196.21 is the one you want.

EVGA Precision didn't help - temperature went up to 96 in a minute. So does this mean I gotta get new videocard or a processor cooler or what? I didn't understood which fan Ungelfrost meant exactly

Is this thing ever cleaned of dust?

What are the idle temps?

Check for stuck mice/rats in your fans. Seriously, 120 deg C should be close to a hard heart attack.

Me thinks your GPU fan is done for. There is no way it should get that hot so fast. Should never be that hot anyways. You can either get a new cooler for the GPU or you might even have pushed it to hard by now and might require a new GPU.

Well, NewMessageN00b, that was actually my first guess, so I've spent about an hour cleaning every piece of dust out of main block case and then I also got my dust cleaner to do some work...Perhaps some little dusties left but no mice for sure

I guess I can try to to open the case and launch the game and see if it even spins. I'll do that right away

I does spins, I just tested DAO with EVGA precision and temp was about 75. is me2 really that different? Looks alike...

Give us idle temps. And your new temps in ME2 after cleanup.

clean up was done before, when I first experienced this problem (i.e. when I installed me2 earlier today). Idle GPU temp is around 60 (right now when all the games are shut downed - 65, went to that in about 5 minutes).

Idle temps should be in the 50s, Celcius, or less, and the max you should allow in-game, is 85 or so, because while the card itself may survive higher temps, it is close to both the RAM and the CPU, with the RAM practically unprotected if it gets too hot (just local air flow, if any that hasn't been pre-heated in the CPU cooler or GPU heat sink, is moving in its direction).

While sometimes a tower's access panel can be left off, and the air flow may improve, that is not always the case, so my advice in that regard is to set up the PC a liitle farther away, to allow a desktop personal fan to be positioned where it can blow into the case, if the temps remain unreasonably high.  If the temps fall without the extra air flow, at least you were ready for a different eventuality.

Do you have any case fans running and does the case have any ventilation. Your temps are too hot all the way around and what Gorath Alpha is saying is very true. If the case isn't venting it will just keep the temps climbing.

Leaving a side of the case open might help a bit. See if there's dramatic change.

I have following fans in the case: one that sits on the processor, another one perpendicularly to it, the one inside voltage box and the one on the video card. All of them are spinning. Right now, when system was idle for about half an hour and case was open for the same time, temp went down to 57
