Just finished up my Engineer play through on insnity, now I need a new class to play. I already beat Insanity with an infiltrator and adept and soldier are too bland for me, so I guess it comes down to Sentinel or Vanguard.

Let's hear your opinions. If you think an Adept or Soldier would be best, go ahead and suggest it.

The Vanguard is the most fun class in the game, period.

The Sentinel is fun too, though I only liked the Assault Armor spec where you fight up close to your enemies.

Yep, Vanguard. Check out the sticky for some videos and all the info you could ever need.

As for Sentinel, I haven't played one. They do look quite fun though.

I hated the Vanguard. It was my first playthrough on veteran mode and I did not like it at all. I didnt play it right but that's because I didn't know how. It's a one trick pony. Charge, shotgun, melee. Every video you see where people bring out the shine in the class they charge, shotgun, and the most important, melee. It's very first person shooter-ish. Their pull and shockwave are put in to make it seem like the class is a mix of biotics but that is far from it.

Adept was a blast. Sentinel is way fun also. These classes are much more viable for a first playthrough. The Vanguard requires knowledge of each encounter for charge to be effective and knowledge that you have to max shields, shotty and melee and forget all else. There is a reason why the Vanguard is the only class to have a sticky, it is not a 1st playthrough type class. But since this is your 3rd playthrough Vanguard might not be bad because you know how to get the tools that make the Vanguard shine and you know each encounter.

Yeah, my first playthrough was on a Vanguard on the Veteran difficulty and it was a miserable experience. I tried Charge a few times early, got killed almost every time, and then hardly touched it for the rest of the game. I played the game like a handicapped Adept, and it was a numbing experience for someone who loved the Vanguard so much in ME1.

Then I tried a Soldier on Insanity, got through the game pretty smoothly and learned about the encounters a little bit more. I found the Vanguard thread on these forums, watched some videos, and suddenly I found myself starting a Vanguard again (this time with the intention to play properly).

I haven't looked back since. It's a ton of fun.

In my experience, vanguard starts as very frustrating then turns into such a fun class once you get used to it.

Sentinel starts out as fun, turns into a boring one since it's mostly about defense/staying behind cover/stripping off shields/barriers.

Playing as a vanguard, I depended more on my squaddies. Nice teamwork there. As a sentinel, anybody will do.

I wouldn't call Soldier bland its actually my favorite class since I like having access to all the guns and it makes you super effective with them; but to each their own.

Sentinel and Vanguard are totally different experiences. Vanguards fly in and unload at close range while a Sentinel is a lot like and Engineer; but with more health and Warp which makes them extremely versatile.

I'd recommend Vanguard since you've already played as an Engineer.

I was thinking of doing the same.  I played Vanguard on ME1 and just loved it.  So I picked it for my first playthrough.  And I also played it like you did the whole way through as a gimped Adept!  I dont think I ever once use the shotgun.  I used pistols until I picked up the AR.  I hardly ever charged and thought the class sucked.  But turns out I just sucked badly at the Vanguard.  Then I went back and loaded up some old saves and started playing with the shotgun and it made a world of difference, even with no shotgun bonuses, i was doing way better with the Charge mechanic.

To be honest, I would suggest Adept. I took the advice of some on this forum and carried on with my Adept build and, when I started racking up the xp, it was a blast. Having so many biotics at your disposal lead to some great tactical sequences. I felt less like poor bloody infantry and more like the Chessmaster. Singularity here, clear this area with Shockwave, funnel enemies in using Throw. If you take Barrier you'd be surprised how tough he is too.

Granted, I modded the guy with extra weapons so he was running around with a Revenant, but hey, I spent more time blasting people with my mind rather than with my gun :D

Sentinels were a class I just couldn't get. It was like playing a junior engineer and a junior adept at the same time.

I wish I could say I did the same.

I used the SMG about 80% of the time and only touched my Shotgun when Krogan got too close to me. But I still decided it was a good idea to choose the Shotgun on the Collector Ship, and I never used that gun even once. So I had to fight through the game using Pull, Shockwave, and an SMG. I'm surprised I have brain cells left.

Ok I'll go with the Vanguard then. My main RPG Shepard is a Vanguard from ME1 and I beat ME2 with it on normal. I used the auto shotgun and used charge sparingly because I kept dieing if I charged 2 or more enemies, even on normal.

So I guess I'll try the Vanguard on insanity, then I'll do Sentinel, then probably Adept and Soldier last.

Thanks for the posts guys.

If you're giving the Vanguard another shot, read the sticky at the top of this forum. My first VG experience was miserable, but after reading the original post of that thread I was encouraged to try again. It's been the most fun I've ever had playing either game.

What he said. Check out the sticky for sure, or just ask! The crazy videos out there (mine included) kinda make it look like you just charge everything and hope to survive. Not so. There's a surprising amount of tactical play involved. It's just a matter of adjusting to a different playstyle. It took me quite a while to come to grips with the Vanguard and it was very frustrating at first. Endure the learning curve and I suspect that you too will come to absolutely love it :)

Sentinel is probably the most OP class in the game due to high survivability, low risk, the lowest cooldowns, and is the best at warp explosions. Sentinel can also play two different roles in a warp explosions, the defense stripper or the warper. This loosens up squad selection quite a bit. On top of that there isn't a defense Sentinel can't strip. A well played Sentinel will be moving forward, playing aggressively, and setting up warp explosions all the time. You can take Reave as a bonus power and purely be a defense stripper or keep Warp for stronger explosions. The thing is you can also do this on Engineer with Reave as a bonus power, so Sentinel might be too similar.

If you would rather charge and kill things rather than set up warp explosions, Vanguard is going to be far more fun. You can still set up warp explosions with Pull when the situation calls for it, but it won't be your primary tactic. There is a bit of a learning curve, but only relative to how easy games are these days.

edit: Oops you already decided, my post was pointless :o

Gotta say. I'm still not liking the Vanguard. Here's what I did. I decided to take my Vanguard on a NG+Hardcore. Cause I figured, well, I've all ready won the game on Insanity mode with my Sentinel. I pretty much know each encounter. So try the vanguard again but up it a notch. I started at L24. Made it through Freedom's progess with no problems but it's the intro so it doesn't count. Went to do Mordin's recruit at L26 and what should have been a half hour session took about 2 hours. I kept dying over and over and over. I'm just not liking the charge mechanic. When it works, its awesome. But it just seems like there is no margin for error. None. Perhaps I spoiled myself with the Sentinel cause that class can take a beating.

That might be true with caster sentinel but roll assault sentinel and enjoy being indestructible facemasher.

I finished my insanity vanguard run a while ago and i gotta say if you dont have heavy charge you are doing it wrong.
Vanguard keeps himself alive by chargin since everytime you charge you get your shields back up. So if you find yourself hiding behind cover and shooting/casting, you are definetly doing it wrong.
And whats the teammates for? Vanguard can kill pretty much anything one shot with shotgun (requires armor-penetration ammo) and if they dont die to one hit usualy one punch to face is enough to finish em off.

Your post wasn't pointless, I'm still open minded. Im actually going to do a ME1 playthrough real fast to change the story up a bit (save the council in particular), get a level 30 guy (maybe 60 if I dont get bored) then fire up my vanguard again or a Sentinel.

Hmm I'm not really sure what you're trying to tell me here. It's pretty common knowledge what heavy charge is to the vanguards, yes? Teammates part is a comparison. With a sentinel, I have everything I need (warp - since I like having at least one teammate along with that power) so I don't care who I bring along. The only thing I care about is their survivability. With Vanguard, I actually bring someone with powers I need and a good weapon damage. I might be doing most of the work myself as usual but I also very much enjoy seeing my squadies work together, shoot/cast and take down some enemies on their own.

oooh this is a tough choice. given your recent experience with engi, i say go vanguard first. sentinels are great but they play like more aggressive engis, while vanguards play like kamikaze pilots. i really enjoy both classes though and suggest playing both.

CHARGE!

Vanguard is so much fun. I play fast and loose on Insanity. Sure I die a lot but it beats sticking to cover like a wuss. Get that shotty out and start blasting some mercs in the face.
