I have been wondering, after my last mage game, how much, if at all, mages are allowed to venture out of the Circle Tower. In the mage origin, you have the option to ask the templars guarding the main door what's outside, as if you've never been (which is a little odd since most would have seen outside as a child, before they were shipped off by the Chantry).
Wynne obviously goes out, given her conversation with Irving, but I wonder how often the regular mages and apprentices are allowed out, if at all. The tower is described as a gilded prison, so I'm thinking not a lot. It just occurred to me that being stuck in a windowless tower with no access to the outside would drive a lot of people stir crazy. Main thing, though, is that if you're playing a mage, suddenly being outside and being expected to be able to cope with that is not something that ever comes up in conversation.

That's why Morrigan hates it so much.

As far as coping with the outside world, that could be said about most of the origins: dwarf, elf... other than the non-mage human, all origin pc's would have to cope with some culture shock it would seem. I haven't played them all so can't say, and about the coversations... can't say.

As far as I know, apprentices aren't allowed out, BUT, I think that there may be a wall outside the tower itself that circles the Tower. So they would have a sort of courtyard, since that's what the mage PC mentions to Duncan when you speak to him at the Tower.

I think mages and enchanters are allowed out as long as they have the Chantry's permission. So, enchanters would be let out more frequently than mages, with apprentices never let out.

I got the feeling that apprentices can't leave, but mages can when they have reason. Wynne was in Denerim enough to know 'The Wonders of Thedas', and didn't act like being out of the tower was an astonishing treat. That being said, I doubt they go anywhere without the Templars keeping tabs on them.

I would imagine (have no way of knowing this, of course) that one way the Circle supports itself is by hiring out mages as well as selling enchanted equipment, runes, etc. Lord Soandso has a problem with suchandsuch critter and applies to the Circle for help. Or, perhaps there are nobles who want to have a mage as one of their advisors. Could even be that a mage wishes to travel in order to pursue certain research in, say, herbalism or poisons. While I can see keeping the apprentices within the tower, privileges come with rank. I like to think, though, that the apprentices are at least allowed to go to a fair or to market if they are in a group chaperoned by a couple of mages.

I like that last idea you posted, it would make sense. And it would explain why your character knows things about the outside world.

And I agree that people can "hire" mages. Wynne herself becomes an adviser to Alistair at the end. So I think that as long as they aren't running off into the wilds, mages can be outside the Tower.

Well, the apprentices are largely those that haven't undergone the Harrowing, so it's no surprise they get shut up. Mages, I get the impression, have a little more freedom, although there may be some application procedure involved. The mages of the Collective, for instance, while being a little dodgy, do seem to operate freely enough to suggest that any mage outside the Tower isn't instantly deemed apostate. There's also Shale's former owner, who had apparently retired from being Redcliffe's court wizard.

And while you technically don't SEE them the templar guarding the door tells you there are windows on the upper floors (though he doesn't recommend them as alternate exits, it never ends well). And what of the Warden? She's a mage surely and has no compulsion beyond her own desires to return and no templar comes chasing her. Being a warden with those duties supercedes any to the Circle but still, she IS a mage and that won't change just because she is a warden too. (I say she cause thats what I usually play but I mean he's as well).

Kind of makes me wonder IF that front door requires 4 men to open it (as the templar says) and the tower windows are all too high up to jump out of (and live), just HOW did Jowan pull off his escape?

*Edit* Also makes me REALLY really wanna hear Anders' story in Awakenings.  He sounds like a really interesting fellow.

Yes, I can't really imagine being stuck indoors 24/7 for years. I work in an office and if I don't go for a walk during my lunch hour I get really grumpy and restless. I hope the apprentices do at least get field trips, but from the way you ask the templar what's outside, it doesn't sound like it.
