Here I am with more pessimism.

Awakening has been the main focus of the team's active development for about a full year (since Origins was complete last spring, then delayed by the console release).

The scope of Awakening would seem to show what this team can create in one year.

The next Dragon Age game, rumored to be a full sequel, is set for release less than a year from now.

Which would seem to suggest that it is likely to be roughly of the same scope as this expansion.

Come on, EA. Bioware may have been expensive for you to acquire, but they have given you two very big hits this year. Treat them right.

It seems to me, based on the (albeit limited) feedback from those who've actually played the game that BioWare seemed unsure as to whether they intended Origins to be a complete game on its own, or merely one part of a longer series with a definite narrative. Certainly, it doesn't look like they have the same kind of structured plan that the Mass Effect people do. And if they are indeed making it up as they go along, it probably will compromise the product in the end.

I dont want to comment on the romances since that feels to spoiler-ish.

As for the story coming to a grinding halt... that is pure opinion. I thought it worked on fine and the build to the end as appropriate. You'll have to see for yourself.

The conversation system i think it works pretty well. I get the same amount of flavor from each character as I did in DAO . Actually i want more since IMO Awakening companions are so much more interesting lol, but its an expansion so you learn to live with it.

That's rather a big hint.

Morrigans storyline would indicate otherwise.

Can you PM the details please.  Whether or not I buy this expansion depends on the romance and story most of all.  If the romance isn't handled properly, then I will dismiss Awakenings.

Same here. Well, I'll probably buy it eventually, but whether I get it right away or put it off for a month or so will hinge on how well this was handled.

Bah, I've pre-ordered and as much as I want to know how my Morrigan romance is handled and as pessimistic as I may get, the Architect seems like a badass villain and right now, that alone is keeping me interested in Awakening.

Yeah, I haven't even played the game yet and I can already tell that the Architect's going to blow the Archdemon out of the water. In fact, the only thing that made the final battle from Origins really engaging for me was the fact that my two favourite characters - Morrigan and Alistair - were there with me at the end. Morrigan's final comments were quite moving, I have to say.

Not sure if I'll get that same level of attachment with the new cast of characters, so I really hope the actual villain makes up for it with sheer coolness and badassery.

question:

is the game worth the cost.

the irony of this expansion was that it cost 39.99 as opposed to the original game which costed 29.99 for me at a best buy sale

One ending?! What?!

Too short?!

I'm really really hesitant to sample this for myself. I pray you are mistaken OP.

I'm not trying to bash this guys opinion. But we all have different opinions. Some of must may find the ending awesome, and other will think it sucks.

I think the problem with you guys is that you have set your expectations to high thinking a game like Origins will come out in terms of length and story. I'm sure the story in Awakening will be good, but not the same. I know its an expansion pack. So they didnt have the resources to do everything we wanted. But I'm sure we will all make due of it.

Frankly - when I saw Origins get an 8.0 score in gameinformer. They complained in there review on how it sucked for the most part basically. But I consider Origins one of my all-time favorite games.

Well, honestly I think the EA acquisition of Bioware may have had an effect that would indeed create such a situation, it does seem rather unclear exactly what plans were originally laid out and where they're going with his franchise. It was a bit late in Dragon Age's development cycle to make any really drastic changes there but early enough to change the roadmap. Bioware may have been wanting to go one way and EA came and said no, we'll go this way. Just a guess but seems reasonable.

As to the review, this is the 7th person to say the story and world felt rushed and underdeveloped which is what my biggest fear was for the game. I must say my optimism for the game has diminished greatly this past week.

So..........you're confirming that DA2 is scheduled for release less than a year from now. Woohoo! ;)

Umm... no.

I'm saying that the size of any team that works on an expansion is small. If you gave a team that size a year to work on a project, you would end up with something the size of an expansion.

Perhaps it's best if I just left you folks to your business.

I don't think it's the fact that Awakening is so short, but that fact that it's so short *and* $40. Smaller dev team is a good excuse and understandable but whoever sets prices is just gouging based on the epic quality of DA:O. I'll be one of the few to speak with my wallet by not buying Awakening, but I'm afraid there are going to be a lot of people purchasing this and reinforcing this type of business model.

By the way, for people justifying this by saying "expansion = short" I think you're all very mistaken. A company like Blizzard, for example, makes expansions that in many ways outshine even the original titles (Broodwar, The Frozen Throne, Wrath of the Lich King, etc). Remember Bethesda's awesome Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind expansions? I just don't understand why so many people lower their expectations for xpacks (especially ones that cost $40).

So Awakening simply seems to feel rushed through at the end.  :(
Thank you very much for your review, as opinions I read so far conform, I have no reason to doubt it.

I´m very disappointed about lack of the party camp. Going there felt like going home, a bastion of calm.
Golden thingis above NPCs heads maybe good for giving quests, but I don´t want to see them over my PC´s friends heads.
Seems immersion breaking for me.

Mainly the fighting part seems to have been improved, my bad luck that this is the part I´m interested in fewest of all.

I dont think anyone means to be disrespectful. I for one like that you post in the forum, I'm just confused on why certain questions cant be answered or responded to. Those of us on the 360 have no idea what is going on, no idea what is happening with the new patch and really no idea what is in the patch. The link took us to the PC patch notes, does that mean the new 360 patch includes all the 1.2 stuff (Dex fix etc.?).

I openly admit that I have no idea how the gaming business works or if you guys respnding is truly bad for the business. I dont know.

It would be greatly apreciated if you could tell me if the new patch will contain the 1.2 stuff for XBOX. If you cant tell me, then I understand. Either way, thank you and the rest of the Bioware team for a great game in Dragon Age Origins. Even with the bugs it's great, would just be nice to play without them.

I think that some people here are over-reacting to one person's opinion, and, no, I'm not here to bash that or anything else. The reason I pre-ordered this game was because I loved playing DA:O. I loved it so much that I played it multiple times (and not for the trophies) as I'm sure most of you on this board did. However, I don't think we need to be jumping to any conclusions. While I do agree that the price point was a little steep, I didn't mind because I paid off my pre-order over time. Basically, what I am trying to say is that basing a judgment such as whether or not to buy a game on one single person's opinion is not the smartest way to go about things. My advice to anybody would be to rent the game, or borrow it from a friend, first if you aren't sure about buying it. That way you can gain first hand experience with it and can make an informed decision for yourself.

I know this may ****** off a few people, and there is nothing I can do about that. However, being informed is better that not.

Ultimately, the problem with reviews is that its always going to be some other person's opinion. I can think of numerous times where I read a luke warm review of a game and ended up loving it once I played it or conversely a shimmering, praise infused review of a game only to end up hating it.

I think alot of the facts of how Awakening actually works are getting lost in the shuffle here and maybe some people are getting worked up about nothing- but we'll just find out later this week.

As for the price- if the game is good, I don't care what they price it. I'm expecting anywhere from 12-20 hours or so in Awakening and if its a solid 12-20 hours with a good story, I'll be a happy camper.

I can think back to buying Dead Space for $50 when it came out and while I've really only played it once since buying it (and spent maybe 12 hours in it), I consider that to be a good purchase because I enjoyed the hell out of those 12 hours with the game. Like any review, what sort of price you put on a gaming experience will vary...
