How do I keep Alister alive? he's currently at a level 17 has 35 strength and 25 constitution, I am a lvl 18 mage and in any tough battle I spend a great deal of my manna healing him .. zevron and morgan and wynn will hold there own even my war hound does better!.. i've got him in tier 7 armor.. and he's useing the Faith's edge battle ax .. which is a tier 7 weapon and does the most damage of any weapon i've come across thus far..
Any advise would be appreciated,
Thanks Achilles

How do you have him spec'd?
Dependant on the talents you've given him... he could be eating flanking damage. Or ranged damage without using some of the abilities to allievate that.

The best way to keep Alistair alive in your situation would be to leave him at the campsite.

bybloshex- that doesn't help much.. at all in fact.. i'm new to rpg's but I have succeeded so far with every other character at making them efficient and powerful.. what can i do so I don't have to leave him at the campsite?

Hmmm... you're not actually trying to make him tank, are you?

I had that problem until I specced it so that he doesn't get flanked when using a shield. After that it got a lot easier.
Also don't forget armor set bonuses... and Constitution is a very good thing.

Bad guys don't like Alister, simple as that. It's almost like he just generates threat without even trying too. In the absence of anyone who's an obvious target, everyone seems to go after him.
Not much you can do but avoid getting him flanked.

Alistair is definitely the best choice for a tank, not sure why you're having troubles with him. Spec him into sword/board, raise his strength about 2 points per level and put 1 into con/will every other level. Easy 'nuff.

I up his strength, dex and con regularly, willpower occasionally and try to make sure he's wearing gear that also ups his stats. For example, last game I put him in the dragon armor which helped considerably. I had items on him that upped his willpower by 9 points so I that I could focus on giving him better dex. Finally I made sure his tactics included drinking health potions - early on, he used a potion when he got to 50% and then as his stats increased I lowered it to 25%. Also made sure my healer initially focused more on keeping the party alive rather than fighting. Alistair turned into a formidable tank for my party.

If you're trying to tank you need to be looking more closely at that DEX. You left it off your OP.

It'd probably help if you gave him a sword and shield as opposed to the battle axe, since most of his talents are based on the sword+shield line.

also if he using battle axes and he is a shield and board character it would explain his durability have you even put any dex in him ? tanks need dex
