Same here.

Also, I don't trust anyone over 30.

Or, you know, just 30.

Being young (12-13+) is no excuse for poor typing skills and general lack of coherency. I think a major problem with it (besides just general idiocy) is the abundance of cellphones and texting, if we're just looking at how they tend to type. Other stuff is just general immaturity but that varies from person to person as well.

For example, my freshman year, in my honors English class, first week we came to school, we were asked to write a letter of introduction.  Over half of the people in the class wrote it in text speak, the teacher flipped a lid.  Yeah that was not a fun year.

Hmm... I don't fully agree.
I guess it completely depends on the teenager's maturity or the lack of it.
Some teenagers are mature enough to understand the truly important aspects about their life and are open-minded and eager to learn and to grow, and some not, or invest their energy in different things/hobbies/amusements, which may appear stupid or childish for more mature persons. And maybe they will outgrow it some day, or not.
And it is completely the same with cellphones, the internet, their grammar, their appearances, games, movies etc. etc.

I have read Edgar Allan Poe, Tolkien, Goethe and Schiller with fourteen, just because I felt like it, I am drawing on a daily basis because I know I am the only one who is able to improve my skills, I am learning as hard as I can for almost every test in school because I know that better marks mean better chances in the future, I own a cellphone, but hardly ever use it, and now I am typing on an ENGLISH forum, in english even though my mother tongue is german.  I've played mature games, read mature books and have seen plenty mature movies. And it only made me more open-minded and eager to experience more...
I am turning eighteen in roughly three months... and I too have seen my share of immature and childish teenagers. Well.. I don't complain about their view of life, as long as they are not mocking mine. I just hope that some won't wreck their futures with their shortsightedness....

Personally, I think that this is where the rating system falls down. If you're playing a Mature game, it doesn't matter what age you are, it matters how mature you are. If you can stand the blood and gore, or the nudity and sex, or the drugs and whatnot, then fine. The thing is, some people with qualifications decided that these can have a negative effect on a growing mind. It's sad that your parents don't care, tbh, because even if you think you can take it, it might have negative effects on you in the future.
I've been allowed to play restricted games for many  years, as long as I run it past my parents first, and they think that it's OK. It's a **** when retailers refuse to sell an underage person a game simply because of a rating, but that's what they are meant to do. Then again, you also have the case where parents are buying games for their kids without checking what it is, and just doing it so their kids can be put in a room for a few hours.

Long post is long, but it's all about how kids can be mature, despite the majority, and how it's on a case-by-case basis. If you post like a 12 year old, then expect to be treated like one - that is to say with little respect, no matter your real age.

I don't think it's sad that my parents don't care. They don't care because they know that I know the difference between games and real life. I'm not gonna go out and run over people just because I can in Grand Theft Auto IV. I know the difference between games and real life. It won't have a negative impact on me. I don't see any reason it would.

Good sounds sensible to me.   I have had run-ins with teenage boys..once they hear my voice on ventrilo or a voice chat program.   I guess what happens is they forget even with voice chat that they are talking to a real female..and not a cartoon character.   I have had some really rude and obnoxious PERSONAL questions thrown at me..due to how young my voice sounds I guess.

Those same boys, if I was standing in front of them, would not be so brash nor so rude.  And they certainly would not act that way if their parents were present I am sure.

But that was one scenario.   I was angry about it but got over it.

On the other hand, I have had good experiences with young people (teens) on the Net as well..some of them have become good friends, and good company.

I guess it all depends on their background and who they are.

I was co-guild master of a large guild in Guild Wars back before it released..we started up in beta and grew to about 150 strong.  My co-guild leader was 14 years old, male..smart and wise for his age.

We had a really fun group of wacky people.   I miss those days..but you know folks move onto other things. :)

I was under the impression you were roughly 2 years older than me, though I won't go into detail about that.

You said previously that you assumed everyone was 32. Does this mean you're 30?

Point taken and situation clarified.
I assume the question was rhetorical, since your memory seems to recall things from quite a while back. =]

I inquired to a moderator, and at this time, none of the forums, sub-forums, or the social site are age-gated. This may change after the beta when the old DA forums are discontinues.

This is why I don't teach.  I would have kicked those kids out of the class.  Heck, had I the power, I'd have sent them back to elementary school.

Sadly, it's not surprising, however.  Many moons ago, after I transferred universities, I was forced to re-take freshman English (it didn't transfer for some odd reason.)  The first paper we had to write, we also had to peer review other people's papers.  Every single paper I read was, at best, semi-literate.  I don't know how those people passed freshman English in high school, let alone college.

Anyway...the whole "kiddie" behavior/attitude is very interesting to me.  In one MMO I was playing, we had a guild leader who, though young, seemed like a pretty on the ball type of guy.  Then, one of his friends (who was a complete moron) started playing, and our guild leader and he quickly descended to levels of stupidity that shocked me.  Needless to say, the guild collapsed.

It just struck me as very odd that this one person could turn from a generally dependable, personable guild leader to someone who was getting blacklisted/ignored by most of the server.

I have had this happen and it scares me. It was not even the spelling that was an issue, it was the grammar that scared me. One of them had triple negatives. That's right ... it hurt.

What I see wrong with many of the younger players is that they have a greater tendancy to moments of idiocy. Some of those moments seem permanent. I acknowledge that there are young gamers who know how to handle themselves and don't drag down their teammates/guildmates in matches/raids. It just feels like many people still in highschool have these problems. I do not know if it is the highschool atmosphere (such an odd place not related to the real world at all...) or just the person breaking out of thier normal character as a form of stress release but it gets really annoying.

While I do prefer full sentences, words and the existence of punctuation, I try not to judge someone too harshly from a single first impression caused by something resembling the murder of English.

I know many adults who type in semi-leet simply because they consider that as the proper language on the internet. While I whole-heartedly disagree with their point of view considering that specific preference, that does not mean those people are not people, nor does it mean that they are doomed to live in the mental state of a 12-years old. Piles of literal garbage can sometimes be seen as "immature" from a quick glance, but really it is the opinions(or the lack of opinions rather) expressed in those "w0rÐ$" which should be used to evaluate the maturity of a person.

There is another case, which probably is rare but I myself am not sure just how rare. I've met someone while playing WoW, some cool guy who is one rare excellent pally tank. Of course, he was no little 8-years old playing WoW and speaks perfectly normal on vent. However, he has a condition which makes forming words correctly together extremely difficult for him on paper/keyboard.

My point is: please read and think, before you jump out and start accusing someone simply because they did not manage to type out a good sentence or paragraph. It's alright to disagree; it's alright to disagree with reasons; it's not alright to disagree with only prejudice.

EDIT: I went to search on Google and found out that the condition is called "aphasia", which may involve different levels of severity with difficulty in different areas including trouble with producing/understanding spoken/written language. I guess he only had problem with producing written language.

heh well most times I just laugh at the "leet' speak type of conversation, for one..I thought it was dead, but I guess its not.

The thing I keep thinking is..if we continue to murder the English language this way, it will become a habit..and then set in place, and people will teach their children to talk that way, if that happens we might all be reduced to grunting and squeaking at each other a few generations from now. :P

Also I have nieces and nephews in their mid-teens, some try the text speech or even the leet speak with me, and I always say, speak to me in the language I know..or don't bother. :P

The eldest of my nephews tried to get away with using the text speak in an English class, as you can well imagine that went over like a lead balloon with the teacher.

That's what happened. Multiple times. Modern English sounds nothing like Old English, and so on.

It seems some people in games and on the internet like to complain about little kids all the time for various reasons. There are times people whine just to be whining. It seems kid or adult people can be mature or immature.:)

I've played both WoW and Guild Wars for several years and sadly I do have to say that the "kiddies" can ruin both games. I'm not talking about those 12-16 year olds who actually behave like mature young people, I'm talking about those spoiled, childish little brats who run around in a BG behind peoples' backs and then score a killing blow and do the /spit emote on your corpse.

Not to even talk about their behavior in instances and guild chat. In Guild Wars such a simple thing as trading (WTB AH) can turn to hell just because you encounter a little kid who doesn't have a clue about trading in general:

"WTS Elite Ritualist Tome 10k"
"me buy"
"OK it's 10k"
"forget it..."
"What? You said you wanted to buy?"
"10k too much..."
"Then offer?"
"no"
"Ummm....I could sell it to you for cheaper if you'd just bother with offering what money you have?"
"you want diamonds?"
"Um, no, I'm selling it for money only. So you buying it or not?"
"wait, me go check...."

*5 minutes later, no answer*

And this happens to be a case withouth any name calling and raging just because they haven't bothered to check out the standard prices.

Well you get tired of nursing bite wounds every so often.

Oh, this is about kiddies in video games.

Pretty much any console game with any following ends up as a bunch of 11-year-olds trying to talk tough. They are annoying as hell and I do not like opening the menu to mute every 5 seconds.
