I am so surprised to see that the sidequest lines in ME2 might be even weaker than in ME1. (It's that true?)
IMHO, sidequests in ME1 have loose relations with the main story. They neither help to enhance main character building, nor add much flavor to the game. (like a lot of Mako trips and exp earning fields only)
If ME2 is again failed in sidequests design, it will be hard for me to justify my further investment / expectation...

I really don't think it's true, honestly. Most of the ME2 sidequests dealt with squadmates and their stories. The ones that were on other planets just snipped out the middle-man that was the Mako.

Thank you. If you are talking about squadmate related plot, I can only recall Dr. Saleon. (and The Family Armor, perhaps?) Yeah it was my pleasure to give Mr. C-Sec a chance to do a thing in his way, but it's just a little favor. For a game like ME, for the versatility of side plots, they definitely can do better than that.

Sorry for being a little bit picky myself. But I really hope the successor worth the wait.

I've done 3 full playthroughs of ME1, and have a couple of half started careers just hanging out there. I'll get back to them at some point maybe, but I am about to go back and start another new ME1 Adept career because there are some things I wanted to play around with. I just finished another ME2 game, and I've kind of been going back and forth between 1 and 2, even though I played ME1 originall a couple of years back. How many games can you say that about? It's almost like watching the (original) Star Wars movies for me, although playing ME takes much longer - you can go back to it again and again, and always find something new. It's especially cool now after playing ME2, to go back and play ME1 and see or interpret things a little differently or more clearly. Just awesome!

I am currently doing my second playthrough and going to import it to ME2. While collecting all the sidequests, I got to say I really respect those who can do this for more then twice. Repetitive Mako trips, same bunker/warehouse incursions, but with very few plots and characters building in the process. To be honest, I merely do them for exp points and equipment collecting, rather than enjoy them like I do in the main quest line.

Glad to see people enjoying it! And Grey ranger is one of my favs, He Helped me alot in getting my foothold In ME1(I was totally doing it wrong!) =]

I've played Mass Effect 1 and 2, at least twice for each game, but I played ME1 three times, I just love this series, I divide up my playthroughs as either:

Default M. Shepard-Soldier-and my paragon/renegade at whatever I feel appropriate for the situation.

or

Default M. Shepard-Vanguard-Renegade

But with the new Dragon Age: Origins-Awakening I got earlier today, I'm gonna put my Mass Effect replays on hold.

I've not played a Mass Effect in about a week now after playing the two games almost a month straight after getting Mass Effect 2, and I think I'm gonna have a hard time waiting for the third Mass Effect.

For me, when i played ME for my first 3 playthroughs, i was playing it for fun, but also thinking about getting the weapon and power achievements also. so i only played as the Soldier, Engineer, and Adapt. Needless to say, i found out that the mixed classes, especially the vanguard, are one of the more exciting classes. I wish i've had known that sooner. D:

After playing as a vanguard in ME1 and importing him into ME2, I really think that's the class for me; its just so much fun using biotics and soldier type techniques. I might play as an engineer next time though, for a different gameplay experience.

You and me both. I LOVE Vanguard. The moment I saw Charge for the first time, I knew what class I was playing, and it didn't disappoint. Charging around destroying enemies is just absurdly fun.

Prolly end up playing a Sentinel / Adept at some point too, but my heart belongs to Vanguards.

I started playing as a Sentinel for a little bit, but you're mainly a support character for your team, that is until you get to use another weapon such as an assault rifle or shotty XD. The tech armor ability is pretty cool too, even though when playing on Insanity, it doesn't help much lol.

I'm sort of doing this the wrong way around - have completed ME2 and have now bought ME1 with the aim of playing the same Shep through both games. I loved the ME2 infiltrator - didn't complete the game in that career as I realised that I wanted to do "both" games as Infiltrator........

Ugh. The Sniper Rifle aim mechanic in ME1 is simply too wobbly (granted, the ME2 mechanic is perhaps too "arcadey"). All I seem to do is tank with my spec'ed up Pistol and do the occasional sabotage power. I also don't like getting shot by my AI teammates when they forget to find a clean line-of-sight to a target.

Still, as an old-school RPGer, there are some aspects of ME1 that I already prefer.

The sniper will get better as you get some skill points in it. Around 8 or 9 it pretty much loses the wobble. As far as infiltrator goes once you get it leveled out it's a beast in ME1.

Here is my preferred:

Pistol 12
Sniper 12
Armor 8
Fitness 12
Decryption 9
Damping 12
Electronics 9
First Aid 0
Spectre 4
Infiltrator/Commando 12
Hacking 12(bonus)

Note this is a level 60 build that takes advantage of the free conversation skills you'd get for playing through 3 times.  You get 3 from maxing paragon or renegade and one for being made a spectre.  so you can get 4 free for each playthrough with the same character.

If you're looking for a one play through character just to get the choices you want, you can easily rob points from damping or AI hacking, to put into a conversation skill.  Pistol with the skill maxed out and master marksman active has the highest dps in ME1.  Also infiltrators can afford to run a high heat build (such as 2 rail extenstions) due to their class bonus to cool downs for pistols.

Of course, I only JUST got my Normandy SR-2, so haven't come to the infamous planet scanning yet...

Some advice about that... be casual about scanning planets for minerals.  Get two or three major deposits per planet you find and fill in the rest as you need.

If you're incredibly OCD, though... I'm sorry :/  You're in for a rough ride.

I'm almost finished and I feel sad already, I kinda regret not doing more side missions, but I wanted to get on with the plot because it was so interesting.

Both myself and a friend have played Infiltrator and it amuses me just how different we can play the same class. He thought it was crazy that someone considered Spectre material started with zero skill, so he did a speed playthrough on easy just to level up the skills. Then he played the game on hardcore using no tech skills and no pistol. His use of the sniper rifle was ridiculously extreme, but he was managing well enough.

That was until he tried Pinnacle Station. I kept telling him precision wasn't going to get him anywhere in the time trial and bet him that I'd trounce his time even though I hadn't done Pinnacle Station in months. Then it was a series of overloads and dampings mixed with pistol shooting galore. His reaction to the master marksman ability is "it just keeps going!"

He wasn't too happy when that unlocked the pistol achievement. He'd been kind of proud that he'd manage to avoid it.

Our choice in squadmates is also vastly different. He always took Ashley and Wrex because their immunity abilities made them near indestructible and he used them as shields while he set up the perfect sniper shot. I always took Kaidan and Garrus because I used tech abilities to shut down a target so I could then set up the perfect sniper shot.

So I've come to and done the planet scanning... I have to admit, it's kinda fun in its own way, especially for somebody who enjoys meticulous, completionist work, but I can see why it would be incredibly frustrating for many people, not least of which is that it's very time consuming.

Thanks to Pteryx's ME2 checklist, I know what are the upper limits of how many minerals I need to research all my projects, so I'm going to go through and scan the planets until I have enough (plus a little extra just because I like seeing my green bars full. Image IPB).

For future playthroughs, however? Seeing as I've already done it 'legally' once, I'm just going to use the Save Game Editor and give myself 1,000,000 of each mineral type from the start and only probe planets for missions. (And Uranus. You just HAVE to listen to EDI say it. Image IPB)

One thing that's really proving difficult to get used to in ME2 is how SQUISHY you are. If you're out in the open without cover, you can go from full health and shields to dead in less than 3 seconds. I'm used to my Colossus X armor + Immunity power making me all but invincible in ME1, and I still have the habit of standing out in the open trying to blast down enemies in ME2. Image IPB "I'm COMMANDER SHEPARD, dammit! I don't need no friggin' cover to kick ass!"

Grats, I just finished my ME1 run and halfway thru 2. Amazing game. There is going to be a bit of a learning curve from 1 to 2, the UI is completely different as well as how you upgrade your armor / weapons.

Once I got accustomed to the controls with ME 2, I like it more now. it's more polished, particularly the PC version.

Glad you are enjoying ME2. ^_^

Me and my husband are also some of the rare few who like the resource gathering, lol.... We like busy body work.

I was kind of sad when I had to put down my ME1 for awhile also,  but I've recently picked up and began a new play through of it. Starting a new Maleshep, full renegade, to go into ME2.

I play mainly soldier and vanguard, and I didn't notice the squishyness as much, but my husbands infiltraitor and engineer kept getting the crap knocked out of them, lol. He was very aggravated with the engineer especially.

Hope your enjoyment continues! I always love the first playthrough of a new game, but get so sad when I finish it! :(

Engineer, I can see as squishy, but infiltrator? They are not really that much less durable than a soldier. Vanguard is can be a bit of a glass cannon, since your non squishiness depends on lock down.

Infiltrator with Master Immunity can stand and melee with Krogan.  Though admittedly for pure durablility (not crowd control) nothing is quite in the same category as a shocktrooper soldier.  Go ahead and try to melee a thresher maw.  With good armor and master immunity I, believe it's something like 22 hits until death.

We're mainly talking about squishiness in ME2, Grey Ranger. :) I'm playing a Vanguard in ME2 right now (I'd heard that biotic classes get pretty shafted on higher difficulty settings, so I'm trying to finish the Vanguard and Adept on the easier difficulty settings where enemies don't all have added protection), and I still die amazingly quickly without armor. I'm getting the hang of when and where to use my Charge power though. It's dang fun to just slam into enemies and see them go flying. XD

AmyBA: Yeah, I know what you mean. I tend to feel sad at the end of games because I know the story is over. :( It wasn't so bad with ME1 though; I'd only started playing it a few months before ME2 came out, so when I'd finally finished ME1, I was able to jump straight into ME2.

In ME 2 I'd agree, though everybody is more squishy in 2. No immunity spam and you have to strip defenses for a lot of the crowd control to take effect.
