How do you get a confrontation scene between Liara and the human love interest?

I have played ME1 like 10 times and it has never happened.

I've told Liara that Ashley was special, but have feelings for her too.
I've told Liara that Ashely wasn't special and that I like her.

I've exhasuted Ashley's dialog, but didn't get into the talk in which Liara tell you about asari sexuality. Having that talk makes Ashely go from calling you "skipper" to "commander", which I took as a bad sign. Can you still romance Ashley even if she isn't calling you skipper?

Do I have to do Therum first? Do I need to save Virmire for last? Do I need to exhaust Liara's dialog first before I speak with Ashley?

What am I missing? There has to be a formula. It's hard playing a womanizer when I can't even get two women to confort me for my sleezy jerkwad ways.

Well, I got the confrontation scene when I told Liara that I had feelings for her (and that Ash is only a friend), but still was nice towards Ash. As for the order of the main story missions, I did Therum first and Virmire last (the confrontation took place after Noveria which I did second).
