Being a soldier is literally unhealthy. It causes you to get shot, blown up and otherwise mangled. Even if you get lucky and survive all the loud noises cause hearing problems, carrying all that kit around is hell on your knees and back, etc. However, plenty of smart, practical and efficient people choose to be soldiers. Health is not the only thing people care about.

They do care about staying in one piece, most certainly. They don't entertain the notion of breaking their ankle just when they're diving in cover because their spiked heel chose the wrong moment to act up. Samara and Miranda aren't soldiers by the way, but I'm pretty sure that they too choose living over looking pretty if push comes to shove.

Attractive people earn more money and are judged to be more competent than unattractive ones, so maybe that drives her wardrobe choices.

Only to a point. Overdo that and you won't be taken seriously, and instead it will be assumed that you cover lack of competence with sex appeal, and that won't take you very far. See how many female executives you can find who wear catsuits to work.

C'mon, physical attractiveness is important in a relationship.  In choosing between an ugly girl with a nice personality or a beautiful girl with a nice personality, you'd go for the beauty if you could.

And high heels enter into this where? LOL

Besides, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Ugly and beautiful are different by people's preferences...
Some people would put Maggie Gyllenhaal in the ugly category, some think she's gorgeous.
Some people think Angelina Jolie is weird looking, some think she's the hottest woman alive.

People will always choose the beauty if they can, but everyone's idea of beauty is different.

Being realistic isnt the point, but being just dumb.

This is why I avoid using Miranda as soon as possible.

It just takes away some of the realism out of the game.

LOL! This topic has got so many replies! Very interesting reading through your views on this.
Much thanks, and yes, I support believable combat armor for companions in ME3!

My favourite squaddies tend to be garrus and grunt because they feel like soldiers. Plus, shepard doesn't stand out like crazy unlike having a squad with Miranda + Samara.

Just an opinion. High heels for female companions is a no go, its unrealistic wearing them during combat. Sure it's sci-fi/fantasy but this really gets to me. In ME1, your team feels like soldiers. In ME2, errr... odd.

Am I the only one?

THIS THIS THIS !!! !!! !!!

Except there is no such thing as "sci-fi/fantasy". There is either sci-fi (= powered armor, no high heels), or fantasy (comicbookish crap like high heels and semi-bare breasts in vacuum).

Legion feels like a soldier aswell, but yeh I agree the high-heels are unrealistic and not really needed.

To be honest I'm actually surprised a lot of people agree with me on this lol!

high heels and semi-bare breasts in vacuum

Heh yeah that's another thing, eyes in vacuum too btw lol! And have you seen Miranda's mask?! It doesn't even look fixed on her lol!

Legion feels like a soldier aswell

Legion is one reason why I wish folks would mod a way to make.... Darn non-spoiler section. Anyways, lets just say he's one unique character and could do without a 'time-limit'

Hopefully in ME3 they will include both casual outfits/combat outfits (as well as an option for wearing casual) for squaddies. That would satisfy both sides of this discussion.

Mass Effect 1 got me back into gaming after a severe craving for some squad tactical combat. ME2 polished up the combat system... but then... no one no longer looks like a real squad ='(

'Cept for Garrus/Grunt/Legion of course, who unfortunately make pretty much all other companions obsolute in my playthroughs.

I just enjoyed the new outfits. Go ahead and bash me if you desire, but I enjoyed everyone not looking the same.

What I wouldn't mind seeing, is seeing a race outside of humans and asari, underneath the clothing.

Oh god, I can't believe you guys. It's a pair of heels for Christ sake. What guy doesn't like girls with heels? It's hot, and it appears countless times in video games before. Every japanese game has girls with 6 inch heels doing flips 5 times in the air.

Who knows what's the fashion like 200 years later in the galatic scale? Why do they have to have the same mind like today's us? And why can't a girl wear heels in combat when her ankles are fully protected by mass effect field?

This did cross my mind when I saw Miranda running around on grating inside a warehouse in high heels. "I thought, well that can't be good for her back!"

Indeed it's a pair of heels.

The first game had some millitary standards in place. You know, armors and such. You can't fight in a pair of heels. That's what the OP said. It's a minor thing. But it's still there.

Well, maybe Cerberus has come different standards than the Alliance. Since the Captain can have fish tank in his cabin, why can't first mate wear heels?

And a one thousand year old justica? Maybe that's what she uses to kick asses for a thousand years and she still prefers that way.

OK, now that we established, that Mass Effect is a japanese game and not a sci-fi RPG, I'm going to get sexually aroused every time Miranda pops up on my screen. Obviously it's the best reason for a guy to play a computer game!

Is the game all about the high heels worn by Miranda? No.

Is the game fully dedicated to the high heels worn by Samara? No.

If you insist in such a way, I would call you paranoid.

Do high heels fit in sci-fi space fighting? No.

Do high heels fit an alien, that doesn't even hava a gender? No.

This thread is about this.

But in terms of sci-fi there are a lot of epic fails in ME2, like the high heels. Of course they are not epic fails at all, if ME2 is a japanese game, so I'm withdrawing my statement. Thanks for enlightening me.

I'll add, who's to say it fits or not for sci-fi? Isn't Mass Effect all about being realistic? As I said above, I don't see anything that doesn't work here.

What's wrong with being hot if the technology allows?

Why can't FemShep be hot and wear high heels?

Samara has no reason to wear high heels. Looking hot is thew last thing she is concearned about.

That said, I am not against high heels. On the Normandy, when Shepars is in his casual "outfit". But when Sheaprd wears powered armor -- that is, in combat -- every squadmate must wear powered armor.

And don't tell me about "technology allows". No techonology will ever compensate for being "hot" in UV-irradiated vacuum.

I sense subjective view there. The culture of Justica is up for BioWare to create and they created it the way that it's ok for a justica to wear heels and I don't see anything so wrong so irritating about it. How do you know looking hot is the last thing she concernes, instead of the second most important thing right behind killing bad guys?

And how are you so sure that "No techonology will ever compesate for being "hot" in UV-irradiated vacuum"? I would say yes it does seem to work that way cuz that's what appears to be like in ME2. And again, I don't see anything wrong with that.

Yes, FemShep could wear heels imo, i donno, maybe they just forgot or ignored such a small thing. It's also no biggy without it, just like Miranda and Samara's heels.
