I think what we really need is to make it illegal for people who are fanatically religious to vote or run for public office.
How do we do that? Church's must be registered with the government and all of it's members must register in order to join sermons and those who attend regularly must forfeit their right to vote and run for public office.

My state isn't mutch better. Florida is all I'm going to say and now I'm going to back out of this thread very slowly.

PS: I hate my state and everyone in it. Goodnight all.

Tampa has the biggest concentrarion of Death Metal bands in the whole world. And just for that, Florida is awesome.

Maybe the suckiness smeck-kitteh alluded to is why there are so many death metal bands. Life there encourages the need for that brand of music, perhaps? :pinched: Not that I would know. I've been to Florida once and didn't see nearly enough of it to pass any judgment.

In advance im sorry for any typos or misspells. I'm on my phone and its hard to proof read what I've written so keep spellcheck hating to a minomum

No, its because Floridas text books aren't mutch better than the ones in Texes. I'm not suprised what whith all the evangalism around my community. I've seen churches not too far off from the **** they show in jesus camp. What else can I say about my state? Well the weather sucks, the people are rude, and there is a high probability of death by car accident. That's enough hate on my state for now. Give texes its time to shine ;P

You want to register people who attend religious ceremonies? Holy Violation of religious freedom laws. Will they get a religious registration card that licenses them to worship their god? You do realize that this is part of the reason the USA was invented, right? To end exactly what you are suggesting.

You've been to Florida ONCE?! Image IPB

...Erm, sorry, that just seems strange to me. I had grandparents who lived there (and are moving back), so we visited them quite often.

Why is it strange? I was a kid. My family dragged me there on a long as hell bus trip. I would find it more surprising to meet an east coaster that's never been to Florida, what with their Disney/Seaworld/Daytona Spring Break attractions undoubtedly drawing in tourists.

You forgot to mention another important fundamental of our nation's foundation, the fact that we're a secular nation with a secular constitution that makes no reference to any particular religion or diety.
Despite this, the Christian Taliban has been working tirelessly to undermine our nation's neutrality towards religion and they're edging the USA closer to a fascist Christian theocracy.
We have temporarily undermined the rights of individuals before for the greater good, think Southern reconstruction.  This is the same thing.  We need to take away the right for fundamentalist Christians to vote/run for office and only restore that right only once they can prove they've given up on usurping this nation under the banner of a particular religion.

On the other hand, the other place with most of the classics is precisely the area you live in: New York (particularly Troy, Yonkers...)

Newest depressing update on the issue: Yahoo News article

This is what really riles me up, TBH:

Yahoo News says...

Changes in specific terminology: terms that the board’s conservative majority felt were ideologically loaded are being retired. Hence, “imperialism” as a characterization of America’s modern rise to world power is giving way to “expansionism,” and “capitalism” is being dropped in economic material, in favor of the more positive expression “free market.” (The new recommendations stress the need for favorable depictions of America’s economic superiority across the board.)"

"American expanionism." Yeah right. Thanks so much for actively trying to perpetuate the colonialist mindset that pretty much helped to f*ck up entire cultures, populations and parts of the world for centuries. Way to educate kids to develop a sense of racial / religious / cultural superioritis and carry it around wherever they go. /headdesk

I miss the days when capitalists called themselves capitalists, instead of entrepreneurs or captains of industry or what have you. I never even lived those days and I miss them.

And once upon a time, it actually wasn't tantamount to political suicide to more or less openly argue in favor of imperialism. I don't think it's ideologically loaded to call a self-described imperialist an imperialist.

Edit: I just have to add that this part at least gave me a good laugh:

- A recommendation to include country and western music among the nation’s important cultural movements. The popular black genre of hip-hop is being dropped from the same list.

Yahoo News says...

Disgraced anticommunist crusader Joseph McCarthy, the Wisconsin senator censured by the Senate for his aggressive targeting of individual citizens and their civil liberties on the basis of their purported ties to the Communist Party, comes in for partial rehabilitation.

*headdesk*
McCarthyism is getting a makeover as well, it seems.

That was actually one of the most insulting parts to me.

Hip-hop is full of culture. It developed in the gutters of the inner cities, and it brought to the light of the world the plight and the struggles and the victories of the poor urban minorities. It shows their desire to create, and their desire to rebel, and their desire for a life of their own. Hip-hop encompasses so much more than just music. Of the five elements of hip-hop music is only one. There is the spoken word, and the dance, and the art, and most important knowledge is an element of hip-hop culture. This is cultural phenomenon that actually promotes knowledge in its participants, and opens it's arms wide to all races and nationalities. Hip-hop has spread throughout europe, and throughout eastern asia since it gained prominence on the east and west coasts of america. It has created culture and brought different cultures together.

Eh, it seems to me that a good half of us are having a mature conversation about educational revisionism with few insults flying around. I suggest ignoring the bad apples and concentrating on productive discussion. Works everytime.
