So in retrospect, did ME 2 fail?

In about the past month here on the forums, there has been an increase of ME 2 hate/dissapointment threads/etc.. Infact, it seems as if it has completely overshadowed that of the love for ME 2. So in these turn of events, what went wrong?

Did this game really not deliver in your mind? Did the lack of RPG elements(even though it was already scaled down in ME 1 and flawed) kill this game for you? Or was it the story pacing? Was ME 2 just to intense and straight forward for you? Did you not get that this game is technically a bridge into ME 3? Did you not like TIM and humanity playing more of a role, that and the whole combo of humans and reapers setting something up? Or was it the lack of choices that are suppose to change the story? How do you feel about those choices and consequences from ME 1 & 2 maybe being bigger in ME 3 perhaps? Since ME is tech the middle part and all setting up for ME 3..

So did ME 2 fail you, or in general do you think it has failed overall compared to ME 1? Do you think BioWare really could have did much better? Is ME 2 overrated you think?

Not a hate thread, but more of an understanding of things in ME 2, things where both players who liked and disliked ME 2 can get an understanding of why? I feel like there are players who are enjoying ME 2 for what it is, and the things it has improved, but is it really better than ME 1? Is this a true sequel? And people who love ME 1, and are not getting as much out of ME 2, are they blinded with nostalgia? Or is ME 2 really that "dumbed down" and bad?

Nothing went wrong ME2 has been successful with critics and gamers and the sales figures speak for themselves. And I'm not seeing this forum teeming with hate threads at all. If you don't like the game don't play it simple.

I don't think you can relate to the increase in hate threads to a failure of ME2. I think the number of people who like ME2 just aren't posting as much and therefore the threads are being over run by spam and hate.

These questions have all been answered in tons of similar threads. I think there are a lot of fans probably taking a hiatus from posting or gearing up for the Dragon Age expansion and when new DLC or expansions come out for ME you will see more fans posting again.

The plot failed miserably, imo.

The characters succeeded in spectacular fashion. (LIs kinda failed, but there is time to correct that in ME3)

The gameplay is mixed for me, but mostly overwhelming success.

The graphics and sounds were overwhelming success.

If *I* were rating the game, and I counted for anything in the gaming industry, I would give ME2 a B+ whereas ME1 would get an A- or A.

ME2 was solid, loved it. The plot was weak, especially the part about Shepard dying. It has been done too many times before ala C.S. Lewis (the Lion), J.R.R. Tolkien (Gandalf) and Avatar...the whole death--->rebirth thing is trite these days. We just don't need it for a story to feel epic.

Could also simply be that people have issues with parts of the game, while still liking it as a whole. with that in mind it is also harder to give constructive critisism as supposed to plain ol' critisism.

The people who don't like it are just more vocal some days. Its a desperate attempt to get someone to listen to them, because someone foolishly led them to believe that their opinion is more important than most

I don't think anyone should go to forums to get an idea of how well recieved a game is. They're usually home to extremists and don't represent the majority of people who played the game.

Edit - Knoll beat me to it

oh god, dont ever ask that question. All it leads to is badly worded wastes of time that are usually summed up as "I didnt understand it"

The combat engine is immeasurably better. Those who complain about lack of RPG elements really are looking at ME 1 with rose colored glasses. The first game had very limited squad interaction outside of the conversations Shepard initiated aboard the ship and most of them were hardly profound (Tali: Engines are cool!).

The real question being that we all know Bioware can do far better when it comes to dialogue and interaction with teams. That is the standard I would hold them to, their previous work, not necessarily ME 1. As to the plot, the whole "get your team" thing was fine until you realized the entire game was JUST that and one or two missions afterwards. Even so, I still rate ME 2 very highly and I look forward to the refinements in ME 3.

No. I loved the bits and pieces of ME1 carried over. Great improvements to game/combat. Though I still loathe using the F key. No Mako(this alone drew me back). I am a terrible shooter player but this has giving me great replay value.

Well, as so many pointed out, the Collector thing just does not make sense. I know how the standard plot trilogy is supposed to work. You start with a hero, give him a problem and he succeeds resoundingly. The next installment breaks down the hero and things look bleak. The third installment generally raises the hero higher than he was at the end of the first. But that only works if the second part does not feel like simple filler.

If the Reapers are behind the Collectors (and almost without question they are), then why did they not just deploy the Collectors AND Saren at the same time?

There are, at this point, just too many questions that do not have satisfactory answers. A lot of times nothing makes sense until everything is revealed. I accept that...but until everything is revealed, ME2 has a lot of things that just make me throw up my hands in frustration.

And of course, the death thing. But I explained that.

Statistically, people who feel negatively are more likely to voice their opinion.
