Mass Effect 2 failed HORRIBLY in some departments, but it also succeeded INCREDIBLY in others.

Its up to the player to decide whether the astounding negatives outweigh the amazing positives.

Im not going to claim ME2 as a massive failure. Bioware still lined their pockets, so Im sure that pleases them above all else.

For me though, the game is a massive pile of suckage mediocrity, and some of the most insulting dumbing down Ive ever witnessed. Definitely front runner for "worst sequel" and "biggest gaming disappointment Ive ever experienced".

Empire it aint Bioware, dont **** yourselves on that, its far too stupid, and combat oriented for that.

We brought the Rachni back from the dead. In retrospect... not the best choice.

You mean like sending the Citadels current Big Hero out to fight the Geth Forces while massing ships outside the Persus Veil? Cause both those things happened.

Except that they apparently stopped once Shepard died.  Dialog choices in ME2 imply that they wanted Shep out of their hair so they sent him out there to deal with geth.

Anderson says that they beat the Geth down to nothing but a few isolated cells that they take out when they find, so they most certainly did not stop after Shepard died.

I've been reading a lot of constructive criticism, but not many people posting to say they hated ME2.  We can talk about what we wish they'd improve, but that doesn't mean we didn't like the game.

Even looking at it objectively, it's a very solid, polished, well-executed game.  We just expect a lot from it since we already love the series and have seen how things could be done differently in other Bioware games.

I feel pretty good about that decision.  The discussion on Illium seemed positive, if a little creepy.

I don't think it failed, but I like ME1 better.

The plot failed miserably, imo.

The characters succeeded in spectacular fashion. (LIs kinda failed, but there is time to correct that in ME3)
The gameplay is mixed for me, but mostly overwhelming success.
The graphics and sounds were overwhelming success.

If *I* were rating the game, and I counted for anything in the gaming industry, I would give ME2 a B+ whereas ME1 would get an A- or A.

This. The plot I found, was majorly flawed, and if you look in this thread: http://social.biowar...5/index/1703573 you'll see many of my personal agreements with the OP as to why the plot felt miserable and dull compared to the first Mass Effect.

But it DID succeed at being darker, feeling more intense during combat (on insanity, sometimes too intense against those blasted YMIRs), and developing squad members... unfortunately, about 8 of those members were completely unneeded during the suicide mission...

Love the game. I've finished it at least ten times already with different classes. As a video game it succeeds marvelously.

As a sequel to ME it's downright silly. Destroy the Normandy and kill Shepard. Two years later Shepard is resurrected and he gets a new Normandy. Along with Dr.Chakwas, Joker, Tali and Garrus. Then there's the whole Cerberus mess. Maybe it'll all make sense in ME3, but whatever.

ME2 did not fail. Alot of thing could have been done better, like Jacob 'Cliché' Taylor, but the day I find a perfect game I'll retire for good.

Bioware improved some flaws from ME1 and made less new ones. But as a standalone game it won't work very good IMO.

While it may be more combat oriented than the last (I don't agree, but for sake of argument) I don't see why thats a problem. Just jank the combat difficulty down untill it says "for those more interested in the story" and no combat last longer than a couple of minutes. For me the focus on combat is only good. The combat wasn't really smooth in ME1 but now it flows along nicely and powers suddenly are more fun than shooting at enemies with your AR

Me too. Apart from being strangely cute the Rachni are among the most interesting aliens in ME. For them not to appear in ME3 would be grounds for armed riot.

I thought coming back from the dead was really danged cool.  And I'm thinking/hoping the fact that Shepard's a cyborg now will have a good payoff in the end.

I think the increase in hate threads are from people who pirated the game but their opinions are worthless, since they have made no investment and are horrible human beings.

As someone who bought the CE edition, my opinion carries three times as much weight as someone who bought the normal and 1.5 times a Deluxe owner.

So, when I say I think the game was wonderful, people should take notice.

Indeed, it gives you a sort of Star Wars feeling, having machine mix with flesh like Luke and Anakin. Not only that, but it makes things kinda personal now. Esp considering the fact that it seems as if the Council and more importantly, Anderson, have seemed to turn against Shep or simply not care. So having someone like TIM go out the way to bring you back to life makes things more personal depending on how you roleplay your Shep.

ME 1 succeeded in making me pre-order ME 2. Best 3D game I've ever played.

ME 2 fails at making me pre-order ME 3. Will wait for credible (!) reviews next time.

Bad story, mediocre presentation, way too much dumbing down, removal of important (RPG) elements, trashing of ME 1 LIs, the list goes on. Not a bad stand-alone game perhaps, but not a worthy successor to the fantastic ME 1, and I expected much better from BioWare.

In retrospect, did Mass effect 2 fail? I think it's quite an improvement over the first one though it has it's draw backs like the really dull resource collecting.

It suckered us out of our money. And Now all they have to do to sell ME3 is dial up the role playing elements and ditch the ammo clips.

... Also show the quarians face and generally wrap things up.

I actually thought the ammo clips was one of the best things they added to the game.  I friggin hated the overheat system <_<

Nope. I loved ME2's character-driven narrative and dramatically overhauled mission structure. It's easily one of the richest, most enjoyable gaming experiences I've ever had.

Yeah, that is dull but it is a big improvement over the ton of driving in the mako you did in ME1.

To me the biggest flaws in ME2 was that the main story of actually fighting the collectors was pretty short and the lack of squad interactions.  That was a flaw in ME1 as well but ME1 at least had elevator conversations (though I never got them much).  I think people were expecting alot of squad interaction like in Dragon Age: Origins.

But overall, the game is a big success.  I'm still playing the game so it has alot of replayability and it makes playing ME1 more painful which is a good thing with sequals I think.

People get on message boards for one of two reasons. To complain or to praise. I have seen a lot of both. However, for every one complaint, there's probably a hundred people out there enjoying the game with no reason to come to the message boards.

I love Mass Effect.

To me there are a couple aspects of the game that were weaker than those of ME 1.

The first and foremost being the story. ME 1 was an extremely engaging storyline that kept you guessing until the very end. A lot of very effective twists and turns that led to the most epic 'ahhhhhhh' moment in any game I've ever played. To me, ME 2's storyline was exponentially weaker than the first, hopefully only because it was created as more of a bridge into the 3rd game.

The second was the lack of what I consider to be essential RPG elements. Looting and armor and weapon customization. The upgrade system was terrible. Mine for minerals and then go out and buy the upgrades YAY! And the outfit changes bordered on the dumbest aspect ever included in a game since the launch of the 360. Do a loyalty mission and when you complete it, you can change your squadmates' clothes to the same basic thing with a different colour palette. Oh and helmets.... forget about those. You don't need them to protect you from..... you know.... bullets or anything. I've never seen an operative of a guerrilla task force run into battle wearing a leather catsuit.

Let me upgrade my guns like I did in ME 1 and let me change the way my squad looks.

Having said that. I think the game is incredible. I just thought they removed some unnecessary things from the game.

Agreed, glad to see someone who takes ME 2 for what it is. It's a phenominal game with great pacing, and the suicide mission def creates a certain drama, like before you do it, you think back to the recruit and suicide missions and everything you and your squad has been through, and then you wonder who will make it.

Not to mention the whole thing with Cerberus and TIM, the Collectors, humanity, the council, etc. It all builds upon the drama and story of ME 1, lets not forget getting to see our Shepards grow and change for better(paragon) or worse(renegade) between the decisions and relationships he makes. Stuff like seeing him become more dark or start to agree with Cerberus ways and things. Overall ME 2 is a nice bridge into ME 3, heres hoping ME 3 wraps up everything the right way!
