WARNING! BRING DOWN THE SKY DLC SPOILERS AHEAD
YOU'VE BEEN WARNED
I was recently playing BDtS for my latest playthrough to port to ME2 (Which I finally have, yay) and it occurred to me that Bioware missed out on an opportunity for some good dialogue. The playthrough also raised a question that's been bothering me so I'm going to share it with the rest of you.
First the missed opportunity, I'm currently playing a Ruthless Colonist and I was at the point where you confront Ballak and he brings up the number of "innocent" Batarians that were killed at Torfan (Wasn't Torfan a stronghold for Batarian pirates? How many innocents could there be[not the question]) and we're given two options one of which states that Torfan was retaliation for the attack on Elysium. What shocked me was that there was no option to bring up Mindoir, just strikes me as something I'd bring up. This got me to thinking of other parts where Bioware could have included a shout out to either Background or Psyche Profile but didn't (for whatever reason), any ideas?
Now the question. It's actually two questions first of which; why is a civilian construction project so heavily defended? I've worked in construction quite a bit and never, in even the worst of neighbourhoods, were we allowed to arm ourselves, aside from the numerous tools we had on hand that actually make decent weapons. But here's Asteroid X57 with more Heavy Turrets than the Alliance training facility on Luna. Second question, with all those turrets and defense drones how were they not able to stop some 20 Batarians (numbers may be off)?

The turrets and drones were probably Batarian (given the number of Batarian engineers you encounter) - installed to prevent humans from shutting down the torches after the batarians left.

That would seem like the logical assumption, except that Kate Bowman mentions in her communication to you that "the batarians arrived yesterday". There's no way that the batarians could have constructed and installed THAT many turrets in a single day, even with their numbers. (I estimate you kill at least 50 batarians by the end of the DLC.)
So, it's a plot hole, but the story and presentation of BDtS is good enough that I can overlook it.

The drones can simply be deployed, while it is not entirely unreasonable to assume some kind of mobile turret technology (dropped from the Batarian ship perhaps). Even the present day rapid deployment forces have all kinds of movable garrisons ansuch.
Furthermore, you don't see these shielded turrets anywhere else in the game so they could well be Batarian design.

Hmm... I suppose you do have a point. It would be hard to explain the presence of those Geth Heavy Turrets on the Citadel Tower so soon after they started attacking the Citadel, after all, unless they were pre-fabricated defenses that were just dropped onto the Tower by a Geth ship, similar to the way Armatures and Colossi are deployed on the battlefield.
That said, the turrets on X-57 read as 'Alliance Heavy Turret' when you target them, so they're probably not of Batarian manufacture. DPSSOC's original point still stands.
Regarding his first point about civilian structures being so well-defended, however, bear in mind we may be operating under totally different social and cultural rules in the Mass Effect universe. There is very much a 'Wild West' feel for many areas in the game, since evidently threats from pirates and slavers is a very real danger on anything outside of central shipping lanes. Likewise, law enforcement is practically non-existent outside of settled planets and space stations, with space shipping lanes and distant planets only getting routine patrols and the 'cleansing operation'.
As a result, it seems only logical that the majority of civilians would have their own personal armament, much like it was back during the Wild West. Lacking funds and proper training, they probably didn't have anything near the state of the art gear that the Systems Alliance or most militaries have, but it may have been enough to put up a spirited defense that could make some pirate or slaver attackers reconsider.
