I tried out Dragon Age back when it was first released. I created a Female - Elf - Mage and chose the background of City Elf. I purchased a copy in January and am now sitting down to play. Now when I select a Female Elf Mage I no longer have access to the background of City Elf. I know it used to be that way as I have images of my character in mage garb and I've never played any of the other background choices. What gives?
Did A Patch Do This? Why Isn't This Background Available Now?

The mage class was always intended to have it's own background.
If you had been able to choose a different one at some point, then you had been experiencing a bug.

At no point have you been permitted to play a Mage within the City Elf origin.

There are mods that allow you to play a Mage with a non-mage Origin, but it's never been part of the vanilla game, as others pointed out. Perhaps you had modded it and since uninstalled/fogotten?

My images are of the character creation unfortunately. I've just never seen another storyline. It was several months ago so I guess I may be remembering it wrongly. I actually played it for the first time on a friends computer. Maybe he had in fact modded it. Whatever the reason I am happy to know it wasn't changed for some reason. I'll just go with a fighter. Thank you very much guys =)
