Don't we already know that ME3 will consist of mostly new squaddies?

...except for, perhaps maybe Ash or Kaiden or Liara?

I mean, there are some in ME2 where it's almost impossible for them to die (like Miranda) But, for everyone else?

It seems pretty unlikely that those eho can pretty readily be sent to the Grim Reaper in your file (Tali, Jack, etc.) will be making an appearance.

But maybe you guys are reasoning it through differently.

Thoughts?

no, you can't really make assumptions like that....

I've heard that this may not be the case for ME3 somewhere but it was an official source so thats good enough for me.

Of course, BW is not gonna make all 12 characters from ME2 available as squadmates in ME3, just because all of them can easily die. I think we will see Liara (and Ashley/Kaidan) in ME3, but thats the only sure thing. IMHO the best case scenario: they will all have cameo like Wrex.

I think Tali and Garrus are going to be in for the long haul. If you're male Shep Garrus is like your bro for life and Tali is a LI which means she's pretty devoted. Haven't played through as femshep, but a reversal of roles (tali best friend and garrus LI) seems plausible. Jacob is plausible since he feeds off your pure awesomeness and Mordin will have new stuff to examine so they are both possible. I think perhaps Ash/Kaiden could show up, depending on Shepard's stance/employers etc. The only characters you can bet on...Shepard and Joker, cause no one else can fly the Normandy!

Who would take care of all the calibrations if Garrus wasn't around anymore?

Wrex was very popular and was my Shepard's good friend and all he got was cameo. Granted he had very good story reasons not to be around. That said, so does Tali. Garrus... not so much. He could easily stick with Shepard. Tali however I see needing to go back to the fleet one way or another, even if she was exiled.

ME1 got me back into gaming. If Bioware doesn't include continuity with ME3, ME3 would get me back out of gaming. Please don't let it happen! =(

You can't make assumptions like that, OP. In a recent interview Casey Hudson yes acknowledged the trickiness of having all characters return but expressed a desire and intention to do so.

Here are some threads which lay out arguments in favor of the likelihood of Bioware having squad mates return in ME3:

And some polls (Bioware listens to its fans):

ME3 is the finale. Back in the days of Baldurs Gate, nothing beat the feeling of bringing your long-time companions along for the final fight. Having got to know their personalities so intensely and having them fight for you at the grand climax of the series... it was... EPIC

I just hope Bioware remembers its success strategy back from their early years. This is what they did, they made epic games with epic stories. Doing anyless would break my heart.

THIS IS THE FINALE, the FINAL SHEPARD GAME. I want to sit back after finishing ME3 feeling the same nostalgia I felt when I finished Throne of Bhaal, watching the credits roll and having the thought "this was too awesome why does it have to end?!?!" bouncing left right and center in my head.

I feel strongly about this, Garrus and Tali won points in ME2 because they were from the old crew. In ME3, I want everyone to have a role at the very least. Them being squad members would make ME3 as epic as it can be.

Universal acclaim so far for both ME1 and ME2, don't let us down Bioware, we are all counting on you to do the impossible. Miranda: "no pressure"

Have to agree one. Let's see all the squad mates (though I could excuse Kasumi and Zaeed) return! It's very within their power to give the fans what they want without the squad mates who can die in ME2 being absolutely vital to the ME3 plot. That's how ME2 - besides Mordin, you didn't really need anyone specifically for the suicide mission. But they still all contributed.

Question: Certain party members from the first game can be recruited in
ME2. Does that mean that we'll see characters from this game make a
return in ME3?

Casey: You will definitely be able to see
characters from ME2 in ME3, as long as they're alive in the end of your
story. It's a challenge for sure, but it's also going to be a huge
payoff for players of the ME trilogy to see what happens with all these
characters and storylines started by the first two games.

Thread troll's post is so new and exciting, there should be a thousand more of them on threads just like this one.

Oh wait, there are...

Time to grow up, son.

On topic, I don't think were going to see everyone return unfortunately. I think that Mordin, Zaeed, and Samara won't be directly available as squadmates.

All casey said was that you'd see the characters return if they're alive, he doesn't say in what capacity. In a game where your choices matter, they will not punish you for them outside of storyline punishements. By this i mean, it would be a punishment if, gor examle, Garrus died in ME2, because if he was a squaddie in ME3 you obviously wouldn't be able to recruit him. They could replace each dead squaddie with some random new schmuck that you have to recruit, but that is also a punishment because this new character wouldn't be as fully fleshed out as any of the returning ones. I seriously cannot see any of the characters coming back in squadmate status, in cameo roles definately, in a significant side quest or two, very likely, but as a squadmate, no.

This is a shame as BW has created a cast of characters that i have got to know and like. I'd love to see them return, but i don't want the quality of the overall game to suffer in the name of fanservice.

I think it's certainly possible...just keep the team alive, which is fairly easy to do now that there are threads dedicated to successful completion of the Suicide Mission. I imagine once BioWare confirms/denies what will be coming through to ME3 e.g. characters, we'll have a massive rush of people re-playing and re-speccing to fit their next game. So most people would re-do the mission just to keep certain characters/choices going.

I know I did for ME1 into ME2.

It's the end of the trilogy. There's no reason why they shouldn't be in ME3 if you kept them alive.

Quite a few characters mention that they would move on after the suicide mission. Besides, 12 squad members are way too many given that there only 2 slots to be filled.

I'm pretty sure that all NPCs from ME1 & ME2 (provided that they have survived so far) will return in ME3, but I'm also quite sure that most of them won't be available as squadmates.

Yeah, but Wrex's survival was optional. That's why they couldn't have made him a squadmate in ME2, since that would have been awkward for those that managed to let him get killed on Virmire..or simply started a new game.
Which makes it also pretty clear that it's very unlikely that Wrex or Ash/Kaidan would return in ME3 as squadmates. ^_^

The only (virtually) guaranteed squadmates to return (as squadmates) are Liara and Ash/Kaidan. Liara because she can't die, and Ash/Kaidan because one of them has to be alive. Everyone else could have/has died, so they can't be a squadmate.

It's definitely an unusual challenge for Bioware and it's not impossible for any of the characters to die (Miranda died on my first run through the game). I have faith that Bioware will make it work somehow. They went to a lot of trouble to develop all of these characters in ME2, it doesn't make sense for them to ditch them all in ME3.

I think they'll either bring back all of the ME3 characters plus Liara, "Ashden," and a few new characters (leading to a pretty large crew for people who had no crew deaths in ME2, but so be it), or only bring back a few of the ME2 crew plus Liara and "Ashden" to join with a bunch of new characters.

I started a thread on this topic a few weeks ago that contains a lot of discussion about it: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/128/index/1259394

It would seem quite a waste if bioware spent all this time voicing and animating characters that may not even be in the game. I think most of the characters will be gone, with minor cameos. Of note:

Ashley/Kaidan: It's assured that one of them is alive and they have similiar backstories in the alliance military. This means they can play the same role in the plot. It'll allow part two of the romance paths which people will love. I think they'll not only show, but have a powerful role in the plot.

Liara: Always survives both ME1 and ME2. Allows romance continuation. I think she'll show and have a substantial role in the plot.

Tali: I think Tali will get the treatment Wrex and Liara got in ME2. She was already on track to becoming part of the admirality. If she's alive and not banished she'll go Wrex's path as a leader. If she's alive and banished she'll go Liara's path as a comfortable minor npc somewhere. If she's dead then she's dead. Tali will be dead for a default ME3 shep to make her acension a special thing.

Garrus: Unlike Tali who was always acting in ther interests of her people, Garrus lacks any real obligations and has motivation to stick with Shepard. I think bioware will bite the bullet and allow him as a squadmate, but not one with any impact on the plot at large. Garrus will be alive for a default ME3 shep as to maximize his inclusion in the game.

Otherwise I think it'll be all new.
