Do the choices you make actually have any effect at all?

As in, I kept the guy alive but told him to no longer do research on human subjects. He agreed and I left and all was fine and good, except that I never heard from him again and couldn't got back inside the tower once I left.

On another character, I drank his potion instead of destroying it and then told him to keep doing his research. Again, he agreed and I left and haven't heard from him at all since.

My question is: Does he ever actually do anything different based on your choices? Or is the only real effect the one that your choice has on party approval?
