On another note, why wouldn't he like the Vanguard? It has a high-ish learning curve, but it's easily the most fun class in the game. Send him to the sticky at the top of this forum and he won't have much trouble after reading it, especially if starting off on a difficulty lower than Insanity.
Either way, the answer to your question is yes, you can change your class.

Yep you can change your class and appearance to anything you want when you import. I've imported the same character at least 10 times and created one of each class from him.

OMG. Awesome. He's gonna love this game.
I'm gonna recommend anything but the Vanguard.
Nope. He will not like the Vanguard. I did it on Veteran before the sticky stuck and it was extremely frustrating. I played it as a gimped adept. And if it hadn't been for Biowares awesome ability to tell a kick ass space opera story, I'd have been forever turned off from the ME universe. I've played ME2 3 times. And I still find the Vanguard frustrating. We are folks, well into our 30's. We've been playing games since the Atarii days. So we know what we like and dislike. Also, it's unlikely he'll play the game more than once, so I gotta find a class that suits our playstyles.
But thanks for the info!

Also, gibbed's save editor can be used to create a ME1 character import with custom decisions (wrex alive/dead, anderson/udina councilor etc) without replaying ME1 if you don't want to, it's also pretty user friendly.
