Its my understanding that you can choose who to put through the ritual and who not to, is this true?
What is the reward? I mean, either you kill your companion who you probably like, because Bioware makes them awesome, or your party member turns into a Warden... Not like they get more powerful...
I read a spoiler, and it pissed me off.. It was about a character dying during the ritual. I hate spoilers, because they make me dissapointed and less eager to play.
So, my question.. Do you use the right of inscription, and what is the reward if it doesnt fail?

They die. They can die from the Joining, they can die fighting Darkspawn in Ferelden, they can die fighting Darkspawn in the Deep Roads or they can die killing the Archdemon. It's like the Joker's origin story, only with death.

I mean dp they get a skill, or a role in the ending, something?
Or is the joining solely for roleplaying purposes?
If so, why do it to any of the companions?

Mhairi volunteers, Anders is an illegal Mage, Sigrun's already fighting Darkspawn and I'm sure there are a billion reasons why someone would put Nathaniel through the Joining.
Not sure about Oghren and Velanna though.

Yes, but is there any kind of reward for doing it? Do they get stronger story-wise, does it affect events in-game? WHY risk killing party members?

Kind of worried about this now, i too looked at the said spoiler, and its to do with one of the chars i'm most looking forward too.
I hope its cause the player who posted it did something wrong during the game for that to happen, cause otherwise it will kill the game abit for me, and it's taking away control from the player, which isn't something bioware does.
Will wait and see till more info comes from more wider player base.

I hope I will get a chance to save the game before I make them undergo the Joining, so I can decide if it is worth it or if there is a chance they could live if I do something different. Still kinda wish Sigrun was romancable though for my Casteless.

Hi,
I'm the poster who posted about the Joining Ritual. I did post the spoilers tag on the title. Maybe I should have bolded and capitalised the SPOILERS in the title.
I didn't do anything wrong and there was no option to choose whether or not to let them go through the Joining Ritual.
I know the Joining is risky but still... Killing a main character withing 1 hour of gameplay?
Maybe the only way to save the person is by using a new character or a mage. My origins is a Dwarfern female commoner rogue.

This thread makes me sad. Not for the spoilers or anything...but cause I really liked her. Why go through all the trouble announcing her and such if they were just gonna off her?

So is it a ''forced'' joining ? if it is then its kinda sucks.
I will really hate if I have to lose one of my possible party members because of a forced joining ? If there is no gain from it then why should we do it ?
Yes it is true Grey Wardens are needed and we need more but if that means we have lose a possible companion ............... darn.

Maybe there are random factors that set when one makes a character, making the joining different each time? I doubt it, but anything to make it a possibility for her to be in my party.

Seems sort of cliche that this particular person would kick the bucket in the Joining...

The joining ritual is mandatory and part of the story, you can't skip it. Your party members go through it and you can't choose who.

I can't understand it myself, in kotor, jade empire, mass effect 1 and 2, and da:o, its your choice who can live and who can die, i'm not jumping the gun yet cause i hope it is like in mass effect 2, it has to do with something you do in the game or a choice you make early on.
But if it's not, i think alot of the people will be more annoyed as many are with some of the topics which have been talked about past few days.
Crossing my fingers, cause reputation hard won, but easy lost, and bioware have a great rep, but this expansion could come back to hurt.

*shrug* makes sense-I mean you are there to rebuild the wardens-going through the game refusing to do the joining seems a bit counter to logic. Also, knowing ahead of time who dies causing you to prevent that person from joining is sort of sneaky
Edit : I think party members mean all the recruitables?
