The HN origin is the most brutal in regards to acquiring a Grey Warden. Her father is bleeding out in front of her, her nephew and sister-in-law are lying dead in their room, and her lover has just received an arrow through his chest. Dead family friends and household members are everywhere, fire and rubble block them at about every corner. The gates are being pounded on, and she knows Gilmore is right there. And there is Duncan, extorting her parents, while her whole world is dying around her ears.

There is no way that the HN would not know where the secret door/tunnel is, she has to know better than Duncan. She usually declines, and wants to fight, but her father intervenes and tells her that the Couslands always do their duty for Ferelden. She does it for her father, and I don't know how he or Eleanor would react if they knew the GW business would shorten her life and leave her with fertility problems.

There is also no way to know whether Fergus is still alive, or at least will still be alive for long. As my HN points out, maybe Howe has something planned for Fergus and is acting on it already.
As for a baby, D. Gaider says that the child will not be tainted, the placenta keeps the poison at bay.

Basically that.

add some more agreeing with Sabriana here ----> <------

But we have had this discussion enough times before.

Human Noble shows how low Duncan will stoop.
Closely followed by the Dwarf Noble Origin - let him tag along out of the deep roads? Only if he is willing to join the Grey Wardens, otherwise, nooooo you may not follow us out, we Grey Wardens, old allies of your family, will run as fast as we can so you do not have a chance to keep up and have no choice but die alone deep in the deep roads.

Boy Cousland is screwed, then.

Duncan does what he needs to and so do you (even if it's after your dad tells you to go).

Ending the Blight >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Cousland family line to a Grey Warden.  I'm sure it'd be a difficult choice to make but a Cousland would make the same choice in the end.  It's not as though Duncan lacks any feeling for you; he sees what you're going through and it obviously hurts him to watch/do this.  He doesn't even take pleasure in killing Jory (I would... XD).

Also, Ser Gilmore will comment on your reputation as a fighter if you speak to him when you're looking for doggie, so that also explains why Duncan is there for you.

Good points.
Janni-in-VA:  I like you're thoughts on Howe.  Would your parents want to sacrifice you Howe?  Nope--they'd give you a shot at justice.  And, your parents want you uphold the line, unbeknownst that your "Grey Warden Ticket" leaves you sterile.

Off that last point, Duncan might have to gulp sheepishly.  However, it's the only thing he CAN offer to the Couslands, who are suffering.

Also, Duncan does acknowledge that you have a brother: Fergus. And although you can't go off after him right away, you are under the impression that you can alert him. And although you might be sterile, at least he can be found. And, your Cousland parents would want that, too.

You're not completely sterile as a male GW though from the impression I got.  If you romance Morrigan and don't accept her deal near the end, she still ends up pregnant from the earlier scrogging.

Anyways, I think it's also a matter of having justice dealt to Howe.

Rips you from your soon to be dead parents, makes you drink a poisonous beverage, at the point of a blade (a death sentence, zero children)... yep he deserved what he got. I just wish I had been there to see the death blow and dance on his corpse.

Duncan? Yes, he's definitely a "grey" character. I don't see him as being any different from Loghain in so far as they'll both do some pretty shady things "for the greater good."

War's a dirty business and someone has to make the hard decisions.

I always fight Duncan up until my father says this, " Our family... always does our duty first. The darkspawn must be defeated. You must go. For your own sake, and Ferelden's."
That damn duty thing. I always look at it as the Couslands have lasted as long as they have, they are only the second highest ranking family next to the throne for a reason.

Thanks to a angry Flemeth  B) but yes Duncan it's a cold guy like Loghain, but at least his fear are more "good" (the enemy after all isn't human AND want to kill everything). Yet, the young Cousland don't have option, Duncan can kill everything coming to him and flee, you can't... SO Die or don't die , the second can give: "Oh  Duncan it's my hero" or " Duncan.... i will kill you if i can..."

He tells you time and again that the blight is his only concern. It's hard to appreciate the significance of a blight in the game world since it's squashed quite easily by some scruffy urchin and a couple of friends, but it's supposed to be the biggest threat to the world, so for the sake of stopping the blight the ends would justify the means for a grey warden.

Your parents want you to live, and Duncan is your best chance. Your mother refused to leave your father, a position I can certainly understand. They had been together so long that she wanted to see the end with him. As a Gray Warden, you are out of Howe's reach, and your brother is with the army at Ostagar, so you'd be going that way regardless. With Duncan, you can actually get there alive. Yes, Duncan wants recruits for the Gray Wardens. It's a Blight; he needs every able body he can get his hands on. I've played it both ways -- arguing to the point where he has to conscript me and going along with my parents' wishes (to leave with Duncan and live). Both ways are valid. However, since the whole point of the origin story is to get you into the Gray Wardens and off to Ostagar, surely even you must see the plot necessities at work here.

*nods* I agree with your assessment. My Human Noble didn't like Duncan at all, but he honored his father's dying request and went on to become a Grey Warden. His was more a commitment to his family, his father's dying request and restoring his family name than anything. This, with his mother's words ringing in his ears, "Then stay alive"... to enact revenge on Rendon Howe.

I totally agree that Duncan can come off as being quite an ass depending on which playthrough you go through. He's extremely likeable if you came through the Mage, City Elf, Dwarf Noble or Dwarf Commoner origins, but I really wanted to slap him in the Dalish Elf and Human Noble origins. In those two, he's taking you away from everything you've ever known, from a life you were perfectly content in. In the other four, he's saving you from imprisonment or execution, so there's good reason for him to step in.

I always thought his handling of Ser Jory to be excessive though. Why not just knock the man out and then pour the darkspawn elixir down his throat instead of just killing him?

I'd agree with you if I didn't hate Ser Jory. :D *\\o/*

Ser Jory = Surgery... That's why Duncan gutted him.
