Dammit, I'm worried about my computer.

I went to the gym to do train my body.  Afterwards I enjoyed some rest and relaxation over at the sauna where me and the rest of the guys hung out and had fun after enjoying some watersports.
After that I took a nap that ended up lasting longer several hours.

Long story short, I left my computer on!  It has been on for 12 hours straight and I'm worried that this has caused some permanent damage to my computer through over heating.  I don't own some ordinary computer, I own one of the most powerful computers in the world.

It's a Falcon Northwest Talon with a Quad I7 870 processor.

2xATI Radeon 5870s Crossfire setup.

8 Gigs of DDR3 ram

1000 watt Silverstone PSU

300 GB velociraptor drive

MSI P55 GD65 motherboard

X-fi titanium fata1ty champion sound blaster

It is air cooled with a Freezer 7 pro rev 2 which is pretty good but I don't know if it was good enough to prevent long term damage due to any possible overheated circuits or what not.

The CPU fortunately is not overclocked but I'm still worried about over heating.

Can anyone who is computer savvy tell me if there is any long term damage I should have to worry about?  The computer is still under warranty but I really would hate to have to send it in.

Ok, that is re-assuring. I was just worried that since I have a super computer it would be more susceptible to heat build up than standard gaming computers.

I sure hope everything turns out ok.

was it just idle?

unless you are running something resource intensive, like say, the Devastator character scene file that was used in Transformers 2 (which took half an hour to save or load, and at one point set someone's computer on fire), i think it'll be fine. :P

Yeah, it was just in windows 7. No programs were running. I think maybe I should shut it down though for an hour or so again just to be safe.

Dude......that......sentence.....is.......wrong! HAHAHAHA!

I think your computer is fine. I leave mine on 24 hours a day for weeks at a time for the past 6 years without issue. Even if it is super-powered it should be alright. If you are worried, leave it on for a bit and then check the bios to clock the CPU and ambient temps. Find out what the max ranges are for your hardware and decide if you need more cooling.

And by the way, computers heat up when they are doing stuff, not sitting idle. You are far more likely to do damage with an improperly cooled computer playing a game for 30 minutes than leaving it idle for 12 hours.

With a cooler like that you could probably leave it on idle forever...

Glad to hear it. I was actually considering going to the bios and seeing if i can increase the speed of my CPU fan but I don't want it to be too noisy. I'll just be careful and make sure I always shut down my computer when I'm done using it.

Have you tried using your "sword" on it?

Have you been tested for rabies? After leaving your computer on for so long I'd get yourself checked out, just as a precaution. Video cards these days are made with feral squirrel blood, and leaving your computer on has certainly caused the plastic to sublimate.

A PC overheating is one thing, in it's own that can cause problems. It sounds like your fine, nothing to worry about.

PCs are ment to be left on for extensive ammounts of time, more then 12 hours plus. Gerneraly they can be left in sleep/standby mode or open desktop (with no "main" programs runing" and will be completely fine.

Of course there is a great debate out there about leaveing your PC on for extensive ammounts of time compared to feqent reboots when not in use. Leaveing your PC on two long can develop "brown ware" that kinda wheres out your PC, and then there is people who say frequent reboots heightens the chance of HDD failure.

But all you probably know is that your fine, you can leave your PC own for quite a while and it will be fine, turn it off if you don't plan to touch it for a day or so. :) I keep my Vista running in open desktop for weeks on end and it runs fine, so no worries.

Are you stupid?

If you bought a good computer then it should come with excellent cooling, and computers that are idle aren't functioning at anywhere near full capacity so you should have no worries about overheating unless there is a hardware failure.

Even a really beefy PC can have bad cooling problems, it depends on your build.   Not to mention the area you have it and time of year (summer *cough*)   So thats not always the case.

I belong to the "Leave it on" group  ^_^

But yes, my system is very well cooled and i'm always checking for dust.

As a practical example, a friend of mine owns a cybercafe. He takes care of it during the day, and his employee takes over at night. Their "main" pc is on for... 3 years i think. Absolutely zero problems.

It's not wild for me to suppose that somebody with a 2k+ USD gaming rig lives in a house that is well insulated (+AC) and independant of the climate outside.  So the time of year shouldn't be a factor.

It's also not wild for me to suppose that the cooling system his high-end enthusiast rig has allows his computer to go on for 12 hours on IDLE.

The only way his computer would be having problems is if his house has excessive dust or/and he doesn't give his rig any sort of space for ventilation and it's causing hardware failure (fans, etc).

Fortunately I just ran a bios on my computer and it appears that everything is working fine. This is a big load off my chest.

Also, to those who say that my computer isn't one of the most powerful in the world, need I remind you that the core I7 870 is the third fastest processor on the market and I have two ATI Radeon 5870s which are the second most powerful GPUs in the world right behind the Radeon 5970?

I left my pc running for like 5 months once. For reasons I've already forgotten. 12 hours? lol

It always makes me laugh to see someone mention a sound card.

And I intentionally leave my computer running permanently. Just have a nice cooling array in there. Really it just seems like he wanted to brag about his parts setup. It's alright I guess, nothing special. Kinda odd that someone who is so proud of their system wouldn't know a simple thing like this, though.  Makes him seem like a retard.

Well if you had one of the most powerful computers in the world wouldn't you want to brag too?  I was serious about my concern but I figured it wouldn't hurt if I mentioned just how incredibly my computer actually is.

BTW, I also have a 30 inch LCD monitor.  Playing games at 2560x1600 resolution is incredible.

I have a more powerful computer than that and I can game on it for 24 hours straight without it overheating.

So you should have no worries.

You have a more powerful computer than me?  I seriously doubt it.
