I want to start pick pocketing, are there any repercussions in the game if I do this? Will I get a "bad" ending or something of the sort?
What are the downsides to Stealing?

People will think you're an untrustworthy ******, and they'll be right!
That said, it's not like the Archdemon pops out and eats your or anything, but just don't be surprised if people aren't exactly thrilled if they catch you stealing form them.
I've heard a rumor, although I haven't seen it myself, that you can goad some would-be-partymembers to attack you if you steal from them. I can't confirm that though, but it would make sense.

So, the NPCs will be less than favorable to me if I start pickpocketing? I guess I can't do it, then.

Probably it would be a good idea to stealth while stealing. I bet that increases the chances that you won't be caught.

I can't find the reference right now, but the game guide mentions that you have to be a bit careful who you steal from in DA:O. Their example was the Dalish Elves. If you steal from them and they find out, they will eventually exact the price out of your hide when you next meet. Here is the kicker- you may not know that THEY know, even if your theft was "successful" (i.e., you were not caught immediately).

Some Knights in Reddcliff call my guy a thief and scoundrel... and I'm a Warrior who doesn't even know how to steal.

So, there would be any repercussions at all if I don't get caught? I don't remember, but I think the highest lvl of Stealing gives you practically no chances of being caught.

I tried stealing from Duncan in one of the Origins. He just kind of glared at me. I didn't receive an error message.

Would NPC attitude towards me be less favorable if I keep stealing even if I don't get caught? Maybe even resulting in a "bad" ending?

I don't think the different ending are done on some arbitrery morality meter like some games, they are based on your dialogue choices. Its not going to be like.
"The Brave Grey Warden defeated the Dark Spawn, all hailed his great victory. Until someone noticed that his sword was stolen from a nearby shop. Luckily karma kicked in and the Grey Warden got cancer and died"

But would it affect the NPC's attitudes towards me?

For some reason I thought this was a thread about piracy.

I've found no negative consequences. Biggest steal for me so far was 4g.

I don't think there are consquences, and why should there be? You have to invest previous skill points in stealing to steal, and other skills like herbalism and persuasion are very powerful.

There are consequences. Why?
Because gathering random plants from the forest is a bit different than say....stealing someone's personal belongings that they are currently carrying on their person.
Try thinking about it from a role playing view and not a power gaming view.

i am a city elf rogue, i have stolen everything from everyone possible (outside of combat) including duncan (i got an enchantment that adds +8 damamge to darkspawn - not bad for level 4!) i have not noticed any negatives at all.

It feels strange to play an RPG, steal something, and not see a "you have been bad, minus 2 good points" message pop up and make you feel bad.

If you find the NPC who mentions something about a town scroll and steal from him, it opens up the cow level. Pics to come.

Stealing from the Dalish Elves is bad!! I steal from everyone no matter who or where. After stealing from the elves I now carefully consider stealing.

I have seen quest givers refuse to give me quests cause of stealing. They said I was a bad person. Reloading and testing has confirmed that it was just due to stealing. Not sure if its based on a number of steals, getting caught or stealing from a specific person. I am not sure yet (haven't tested it) if this effect carries over to other towns or not.

I've been attacked by guards in Denerim after stealing, and they made reference to us as "untrustworthy Grey Wardens". This was with Zev pickpocketing.
Free loot, and easy XP...I don't see the downside...
