While I'm tempted to go back to an earlier save, the prospect of having to replay a large portion of today's session is pretty deterring and in all fairness I don't really know how far back I have to go to rectify this. Regardlessly, it sucks. :/

I have Lili steal all the time and have never had a thing happen. Are you all refering to the PC stealing?
If you try and open chests that are guarded by people they will trigger cutscenes and people will think you are a thief (they're right!). If you fail pickpocketing some NPCs will have different throw-away dialog saying they're watching you and such.

So, I've been playing a goody-two-shoes character for 30 hours and all of a sudden I'm a thief, just because the game didn't communicate the adverse effects of stealing.
How are you playing a goodie-two-shoes if you are stealing from everyone?

Stealing Successes: 3
Stealing Failures: 3
Technically, Leliana was the one doing the stealing. Anyway, I did it mostly to try the feature out, not for profit.

Okay, this is starting to annoy me: I dispatched the first group of Denerim guards and just now a second group is about to attack me, the "thief" as they put it. There's 19 of them - yes, I counted. Nono you arent' a thief because of documentation, you ar a thief because you STOLE THINGS.
The manual didn't say that if i killed a man locked in a cage I would be a murderer but..guess what? Trns out that i am.

I have stolen from every character I could in the entire game. I have also tried stealing prior to talking to them all because some of the NPCs leave after you talk with them.
I have saved before stealing from each group of 3-4 NPCs but still haven't had any kind of reprecussion. As I had been thinking about the game in the the last few days I thought the game was lacking in some kind of response to stealing so many things.

I had Leliana steal from everyone (only First Enchanter and Ziathrose (sp) caught her), but eventually, some 'evil' token showed up; some sort of bad luck charm thing implying bad things were coming due to her constant thievery...
It freaked me out, so I reloaded.

Yeah, that makes no sense. I can accept being forced to pay a fine when caught stealing, but being sentenced to death? I've stolen a total of 3 items (and failed 3 times) and as a result I've had to kill 40 guards just to save my own neck. Come on, seriously? Does Ferelden have a bizarre zero tolerance policy in regards to stealing or what? You'd think they'd have worse things to worry about, what with that little Blight and all.Sloth Of Doom wrote...

LMAO. I didn't think it would get that serious.

Denerim is the only place this happens. Without going into spoilers I think it has something to do with who runs the city and what he thinks about grey wardens. You basically just gave him an excuse to kill you and look like a hero doing it
Oh, so it's not like a permanent thing? I really don't want to fight a bunch of guards every time I enter the city.
Ah well, I guess I'll play on and enjoy the bonus experience, rather than loading from yesterday's savegames. Thanks for the input.

for example...a locked chest in a shop...you can casually stroll up to it, unlock it...take everything and leave...no one even glances at you...
You pickpocket someone RIGHT infront of a guard....the guard must be really good at sleeping with his eyes open AND standing up AND moving around at the same time...

I liked Baldur's gate 1&2.. if you failed a pick pocket, people attacked you
I wouldn't say I liked that but I do think there should have been more responses to stealing. I have completed every town now except for Denerim so I think I may run into what you guys are seeing. I'll also look to see if I have the token you guys were talking about.
I haven't really stole anything worth value yet either. It would be nice if there were a few things you could steal that would say jump you from plot point 1 to plot point 3 because you stole whatever item to skip the plot point 2. So by being a good pickpocket you get some kind of different result for completing a quest by an alternate method.

That is just ridiculous. Having that kind of response (what I recall as) a few failed attempts is little more than punishing the player. If the guard had that kind of response to you, then why have I had a random encounter with around 15 bandits at once?
The entire idea of it, from an in-game perspective, doesn't make sense when the player has to deal with the counter to this. Being a random encounter of a large amount of bandits. Nor does triggering these encounters because the player successfully stole.

2. If you steal in Denerim you will be attacked by guards while travelling on the city map (random encounter) about two or three times.
3. If you steal from the Dalish you will be attacked while travelling through the Brecillian forest (random encounter) once.
That's all that I know of, having gone through the game and stealing from pretty much everybody.

At the end of the game, I had 1058 stealing successes. That's a ton of extra money and potions.

Or I could be wrong. It happened once before, a few years ago.
