yesterday i decided to start a new game with a dual weilder and i figured if i'm gonna DW i may as well roll a rogue and see what its like.
Well its awesome, more exp, more loot, more cash, more dialouge options. Rogues get more of everything.

Yeah, that makes no sense. I can accept being forced to pay a fine when caught stealing, but being sentenced to death? I've stolen a total of 3 items (and failed 3 times) and as a result I've had to kill 40 guards just to save my own neck. Come on, seriously? Does Ferelden have a bizarre zero tolerance policy in regards to stealing or what? You'd think they'd have worse things to worry about, what with that little Blight and all.
To be fair, you've now stolen three items and killed 40 guardsmen. I think a death sentence is definitely in order.

Oh and seriously the random encounters are the whole point IMO. You can pick pocket EXP, and it's fun and funny and you get some challenging fights. 50 against 4 may not sound fair, but I just killed a greater dragon, a bunch of drakes and lesser dragons, a ton of cultist, some shades, and several darkspawn. Do you think 50 armed humans can touch this?

Would you steal a smurf?

Haha yeah after downloading Warden's Keep I tried playing and it said something like
"You have purchased Warden's Keep, you must now be connected to BioWare in order to play the game, hahaha you suck idiot, you actually spent money on this over priced short shoddy invasively advertised DLC and now if your internet ever goes down or if there's a problem with the server you're screwed, but we already have your money and we're laughing all the way to the strip bar so we really don't care how you feel about it."
Of course I could be paraphrasing a bit. Anyway I couldn't help but think
-"I bought the damn DLC and this is the type of crap I have to put up with? People who download it illegally don't have to put up with this crap so why do I?"
You can pretty much guess what I did next. I'm so disappointed in BioWare right now, I still love them but I love them like I love ice cream after finding a hair in it.

I mean: You are in Denerim and Loghain is the new ruler(almost) and lets everybody hunt Grey Wardens.
But there is something, that only happens to stealing Thiefs...

Hundreds of thousands of otherwise legitimate gamers feel the same way.

Some are caused by stealing, like from Dalish.

In all my playthroughs of the game I've never had that level of encounter from Denerim guards, and I spent a decent amount of time there. This is most likely a case of a stealing encounter, and if that holds true on my current playthrough where I steal everything not nailed down to test this then I can only say one thing. That is extremely bad design.
The reason is simple, it factors into their desire to limit player funds and prevent them from buying 'higher tier' equipment sooner and more readidly. Which, in turn, makes the stealing ability completely pointless and should not have been in the game if they decided such extreme measures should be used to 'punish' a player that engages in a high amount of theft.
At that point I'll definitely be looking for a mod that lets me manually level up characters and pitch out the useless crap it picks up from the auto-level.

I like how you get ambushed by 20 guardsman for stealing, but when the Blight hits Denerim you have about 8 guards defending the City Gate with your party.
See, stealing has consequences. Otherwise youd have 28 guards helping you
Actually it would be pretty sweet if killing guardsmen impacted end-game friendly forces.

Your party members will then help you slaughter the guards. Even Wynne and Leliana, who in every other instance are good people and against any form of evil/badness.
I guess the consequence of stealing is that it simply doesn't fit in with the character that you're forced to be, a Grey Warden, sworn to defend the land from evil.

Woah woah wait a moment. Excuse me but the Grey Wardens aren't above theft, murder, blood magic, genocide, regicide ect if it will secure the future safety of the world. Whatever it takes to win against the blight, no sacrifice is too great. Stealing lines your pockets so that you can buy better gear allowing you to better defend against the blight, there's no reason a Warden who thinks it's useful wouldn't do it.

Agreed. You need coin to wage a war. Just look at your freeloading allies and their constant want for your goods. But do they give back? Nooooo! No wonder the Wardens are needed.

The question that's still in the air is whether you suffer any negative consequences if you never actually fail to steal.

I suppose you're right, but letting the guards kill me didn't seem like an option at the time. I figured I had to be alive to keep playing the game.Rhys Cordelle wrote...

I've been attacked by Denerim guards twice: the first I was accused of "pilfering" and the second they called me a "thief". I agree they were rather eager to punish me for my misdemeanor, but I have absolutely no doubts both encounters were the result of failed stealing attempts, probably in the Denerim market IIRC.Sarevok Anchev wrote...

Have you done those? If you haven't and are getting that response I'd have to say it is rather disappointing. If you have, it might also be tied to those. I can't say for sure.

I think those are a biproduct of doing 'certain quests' in Denerim for 'certain people', rather than making use of Stealing. My first playthrough as a Warrior, I didn't have Stealing at all, and encountered both groups of guards travelling through Denerim.

Nah, I've deliberately ignored most of the shady quest NPCs. I've done a couple of quests for the Blackstone Irregulars, Mage's Collective and the Chanters, but I guess they none of those truly fall into the legally dubious category you're referring to.Alneverus wrote...
Actually I just had a thought. There is a certain quest lines in Denerim of ill-repute. Trying to avoid any spoiler, but I'm curious if you might have done those also. I've done several but never had anything of that nature from doing those particular quests.

I'll load an earlier save tomorrow and see if I can reproduce the guard event by failing to steal things.

As a side note I did several of those and never had any issue of being called a thief during a random encounter. Even done some of the far more shadier type quests and never had anything of that nature. The only large encounters in the city I had were two large scale bandit encounters.

Other than getting ambushed a few times which are actually really fun fights, it does not have any negative ramifications in the main plot.
That's kind of a spoiler, but I think people want to know so that they can pick up Pickpocketing or not.
