i see coercion, herbalism, poison making, trap making, combat training, and survival all as better options, so yeah.
if stealing had a huge penalty assosciated with it as well as the skill point investment i think it would quickly be dubbed 'worthless'

Would you steal a smurf?
I would, gotta get yourself a Smurfette! (If you've watched Donnie Darko then you'll understand).

If that is, indeed, the case then aside from using it to get something extra from a mini-boss or a boss encounter the skill is useless. Unless you wanted to get these encounters for XP.

The indication I got from Meadowz post is that her random encounters have come from nothing but pickpocketing. Which, if it holds true, is a sad situation given there is an entire quest line dedicated to theft and another to assassination that doesn't yield the kind of response that person has seen.
Yup. I loaded a previous save where I had 0 failed attempts and I didn't face any guards while travelling in Denerim. After a single failed attempt I travelled to the same destination as previously, with this result: one two.

I vote Ninjas.:innocent: Pirates just suck with all their "Arr" and they stink and besides, they kill just anyone. Ninja only kills rich people and only if someone pays for it (and they're very expensive, too, so one is quite on the safe side).Noxxio wrote...
For some reason I thought this was a thread about piracy.
Oh, you meant THAT piracy ?
Err, it is not a crime to kill people who are trying to kill you.Rhys Cordelle wrote...
To be fair, you've now stolen three items and killed 40 guardsmen. I think a death sentence is definitely in order.
I think the game should ask you a fine that raises the more often you get caught (outside of battle, anyway). And maybe the shopkeepers should start giving you worse and worse conditions, until you are completely forbidden. Also, I think you should gain access to special shopkeepers (fences) who offer very bad conditions but dont care how much you have stolen.Dylath Leen wrote...
I can't bring to mind any crpgs that handles this aspect of things very well.

Stealing from nobles and killing folk doesn't have that kind of affect, but failing to pick a pocket does? That seems like a consistency issue, to be honest. I have some other thoughts as to why, but for the most part I don't see the point of rambling on in regards to that.

I have seen quest givers refuse to give me quests cause of stealing. They said I was a bad person. Reloading and testing has confirmed that it was just due to stealing.
Yup, it is. And if you steal from the Dalish, not only will they attack you later, Varathorn will stop selling to you.

I've been wondering about this too though, debating whether or not to steal in Denerim. Hrmm.
