I have the same problems Popeandy has. It seems randomly, either during conversations, during combat, or just sitting around twiddling my thumbs. The only consistency is that it doesn't take very long for the crash to happen (usually within the first 5-15 minutes of playing) and it locks up my computer.
Oddly enough there are times when I pull up the task manager and that seems to wake DAO out of its freeze for a few seconds to hear the rest of the conversation, or another snippet of combat sounds before freezing again and locking up my computer for good.
I've tried everything I could think of, updating drivers, going back to old drivers, downloading vista SP2, reverting back to SP1, altering all the graphics settings to low, playing in windowed mode and nothing seems to work. The only change I cannot enact is reverting DAO to patch 1.02 as I have the product through steam which leads me to suspect 1.03 is the problem. Plus, I had put in three complete play throughs before 1.03 hit with zero problems with DAO on any setting.

1.03 has been working fine for me until
I installed Awakening. Crashes occur every 30min to an hour and always
during a fight.

I also have a problem with 1.03, last night without awakening installed, tonight with it. The screen goes black and only a reboot helps. This tends to occur during dialogs/cut scenes and my nontechnical guess would be that it is related to the graphics card. (Although I've been playing under 1.02 hours without end.)
Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP2
Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT, driver 196.21
I play on 1680 x 1050, AA off, Graphics and Texture details high.

You may want to try running the game at a lower resolution. One thing I have noticed across the countless threads is that there are a number of folks mentioning 1900 X resolution. I saw a number of postings (sorry don't remember the threads) indicating some folks dropped the resolution out of 1900 range and crashes stopped (or greatly reduced.) Another observation, another group of people having problems are using mods that overide game files. The few folks mentioning they aren't having issues (so far - I'm in that group) seem NOT to be using mods. Good luck
Edit: Not using Mods, but do have DLC loaded (all major ones)

yup random crashes here as well. 1.03 is when it all started for me. all previous patches did not crash my system. and when it crashes for me it is not a normal CtD, it shuts my system OFF. not frozen, off. it hampens every 3-5 minutes for me and can happen durring anything, combat, zone loading, but does however happen most prevelantly durring conversations.
EDIT: as a side note I have removed all third party mods from the game ( except one that allows me to use my wardens keep gear in awakening) but still have all available Bioware DLCs installed.

How does one roll back the 1.03 patch after it's installed?
On Steam? You don't, on a regular installation, you uninstall and roll back to the last patch. There's no easy way to roll back.
