1.03 has been working fine for me until I installed Awakening. Crashes occur every 30min to an hour and always during a fight.

System:
Windows 7 64
9 GB Ram
Intel Core i7 920
GeForce GTX 260
Everything up to date, I play at 1900x1200 resolution with everything maxed and no AA.

I have the same problems Popeandy has. It seems randomly, either during conversations, during combat, or just sitting around twiddling my thumbs. The only consistency is that it doesn't take very long for the crash to happen (usually within the first 5-15 minutes of playing) and it locks up my computer.

Oddly enough there are times when I pull up the task manager and that seems to wake DAO out of its freeze for a few seconds to hear the rest of the conversation, or another snippet of combat sounds before freezing again and locking up my computer for good.

I've tried everything I could think of, updating drivers, going back to old drivers, downloading vista SP2, reverting back to SP1, altering all the graphics settings to low, playing in windowed mode and nothing seems to work. The only change I cannot enact is reverting DAO to patch 1.02 as I have the product through steam which leads me to suspect 1.03 is the problem. Plus, I had put in three complete play throughs before 1.03 hit with zero problems with DAO on any setting.

System Specs:
Vista 32bit SP2
4 GB RAM
Dual Geforce 8800 GT cards
Intel Quad Core Q6600 @ 2.40GHz

Yeah I hear you. The only issue before was long loading screens but that doesn't break the game that is simply an annoyance. Crashing/freezing every few minutes is game breaking. I have the most updated drivers for everything and have done two full playthroughs without issue.

I'm just simply suprised they released the patch when it has this many issues. It seems easy enough for anyone in the community to find what seems to be quite a list of bugs/crashes yet somehow it fell through the cracks? Meh...just venting my frusterations out on the forums in hopes that someone from Bioware will notice a growing thread and get on a fix fast.

Oh and I haven't even installed awakening yet I have it but wanted to finish a second playthrough. And I hear it gets worse after you install it /sigh

OK, so maybe I'm happy to be (still) on dial-up and can't get the 1.03 update to finish downloading?

You may want to try running the game at a lower resolution.  One thing I have noticed across the countless threads is that there are a number of folks mentioning 1900 X resolution.  I saw a number of postings (sorry don't remember the threads) indicating some folks dropped the resolution out of 1900 range and crashes stopped (or greatly reduced.)   Another observation, another group of people having problems are using mods that overide game files.  The few folks mentioning they aren't having issues (so far - I'm in that group) seem NOT to be using mods.   Good luck

Edit:  Not using Mods, but do have DLC loaded (all major ones)

I also have a problem with 1.03, last night without awakening installed, tonight with it. The screen goes black and only a reboot helps. This tends to occur during dialogs/cut scenes and my nontechnical guess would be that it is related to the graphics card. (Although I've been playing under 1.02 hours without end.)

Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP2
Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT, driver 196.21
I play on 1680 x 1050, AA off, Graphics and Texture details high.

FYI - I have same vid card/Driver and use same resolution; AA on; Graphics/Texture set high - no problems (yet);  Difference would be using Windows 7 64.

Doesn't surprise me from what I've seen across threads. Some "fixes" folks are suggesting work for some but not everyone. I just keep seeing that resolution, saw some posts on how altering the resolution fixed, and since changing resolution is "quick" fix - I threw it out there for someone to try. I have a feeling the problem is going to be traced back to the modification to fix the load issue. However, it wouldn't surprise me in SOME cases it's also not related to mods people have used (and saved with) not be compatible with the new material.

yup random crashes here as well. 1.03 is when it all started for me. all previous patches did not crash my system. and when it crashes for me it is not a normal CtD, it shuts my system OFF. not frozen, off. it hampens every 3-5 minutes for me and can happen durring anything, combat, zone loading, but does however happen most prevelantly durring conversations.

EDIT: as a side note I have removed all third party mods from the game ( except one that allows me to use my wardens keep gear in awakening) but still have all available Bioware DLCs installed.

Just out curiosity, you still using a save file created when you had the 3rd party mods installed?  Have you tried creating a new character since removing the third-party mods?

How does one roll back the 1.03 patch after it's installed?

On Steam? You don't, on a regular installation, you uninstall and roll back to the last patch. There's no easy way to roll back.

My bad - I don't use Steam, so I was wondering how to rollback with a normal installation. Any advice would be appreciated!

I don't think there is a way save for uninstalling and re-installing the game. As I said before though if you will be playing Awakening it requires the 1.03 patch and will install it when installing the game.

Just my quick input:

Having same crashes, seemingly only in combat though. No particular time frame for a crash (happened in first 15 minutes once, and just played for 2 hours with no crashes until now).

Before 1.03 it was stable, never seen it crash. Since installing 1.03 I've been having issues - I do *not* have Awakening.

i5 750

4GB DDR3 RAM

ATI HD5770

1440x900 2xAA, everything set to high.

System is stable in every other game, and was fine pre-1.03.

Time for 1.03a, Bioware. ;)

(Apologies for the double post, my internet is [long stream of expletives] and refuses to let me use the Edit button properly.)

To add, I'm running Windows 7 x64 with the retail box copy.

Never had a problem with DA before, but when I started playing Awakening the game crashed after about 5 minutes of play. Hopefully a patch can be released soon to fix this problem, I see that many others are experiencing the same thing. Might hold off on playing till a patch so I can actually enjoy playing the game.

Running the Steam version, here's my specs if needed:

# Operating system:Windows 2.6.1.7600 ()
# CPU type:Intel® Core™2 CPU          6600  @ 2.40GHz
# CPU Speed (GHz):3.22
# System memory (GB):3.999
# Graphics card model:NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS
# Graphics card driver:nvd3dum.dll
# Desktop resolution:1680x1050
# Hard disk size (GB):465.759
# Hard disk free space (GB):276.04

Just experiencing crash to desktops since 1.03 Awakening.

Have had 5 thus far during my Awakening playthru. Never experienced this with Dragon Age Origins. 1.02 was definitely more stable.

*BUMP*

/sigh

Looks like Bioware still could care less about fixing the bugged out patch that causes at least PC Dragon Age owners to be stuck with an expensive un-playable game collecting dust.

FFS Bioware did you even test this on the PC? Seriously how could you miss the crashing every 5 minutes among the long list of other issues I've heard of from this new patch / expansion. I don't remember any bugs or issues with the launch of Dragon Age why did you guys screw it all up?

1.3 fixed the load times, but it introduced this crash bug. cant play for more than 20 minutes without crashing. it happens only during combat. my crashes are pretty tame though it just instantly goes to desktop and then i can restart the game right away.

I know I'm going to curse myelf, but the crashing seems to be subsiding here. Only once last night (about 4 hours) and not at all yet today ( about an hour now) It seems to happen to me exclusively during combats, especially when I cast mana clash. My eyesight is pretty bad, so I have to keep my resolution up.

I cannot believe Bioware has not even commenter here.

Maybe it's time for a deluge of phone calls to tech support.
