I've never had any problems with DA:O before I started to play Awakening.
This error seems to be affecting lots of people, here's hoping it's sorted sooner rather than later.

Awakenings was just launched, so give it some time
Oh, believe me. I'm in no hurry, you see...I've just restarted my char, and I'm still in lvl 9, at the Circle Tower. Ive only beaten Lothering and Redcliffe by now and I'm utterly decided to do absolutely all the side-quests in DA:O. I assure you that I've plenty of time until they properly patch Awakening...
...or I would if I could get though the Sloth demon fight without getting a ****ing crash every time I try.

From my expierence, i would say get rid of vista. regardless of 32 or 64, i HAD it on my laptop, and upgraded as soon as 7 came out.
How is Vista has to do with anything? Since SP2 the core is basically the same or almost the same as Win7's core.
Also, why would a person ditch an OS for a game? These things cost money unless you go BSD/GPL way, but then you wouldn't be playing too much of these games.
As long as the OS is supported and works fine there is really no need to ditch it just because some people don't like it. XP for instance is coming out of support soon and some of its features are dated, so yes, it's a good idea to switch, but why switch from Vista?

Im a 21 year old college student who works for a living.
Vista SUCKS! Im not bashing microsoft, or the programmers, im just saying for the 4 years ive had vista, ive had nothing but problems.
So pretty much, is it worth the 800 dollars to buy a new computer or the $30 for win7.
Havent you all heard of Digital River?? They were a Microsoft licensed partner, and thats where i got win7 prof. 64bit.
think of vista as a Hugo, and win7 as a 360 modena spyder.
I have never had a single problem with win7, ever. If you all are still having problems, instead of posting on here, try calling EA service. that has allways been faster, and you can actually yell at a person if you feel the need instead of ranting and raving on here.
The best of luck to you all, i wish there was something more i could help you all with.

Welcome to the real life. It was the same for me and most my friends when I did the BSc.Im a 21 year old college student who works for a living.
Sure you're not bashing...Vista SUCKS! Im not bashing microsoft, or the programmers, im just saying for the 4 years ive had vista, ive had nothing but problems.
Notice that you've had problems. That doesn't meen all people had problems. I for instance never had a single problem with it. Does it make Vista perfect? No. Does your statement make Vista flawed? No.
Sure, if to judge only by the themes, then win7 is better.think of vista as a Hugo, and win7 as a 360 modena spyder.
Does it make win7 perfect? No.I have never had a single problem with win7, ever.
Oh wait, we've already covered that.
Bottom line, don't make suggestions that don't make any sense at all, like switching OS.
Generally they don't really help resolve problems, just frustuate people.

Anybody here (apart from me) thinks 1.03 is perhaps the worst patch ever released for any game you've played in your life? Looking at the bug reports, I can't help but think that. Seriously.
Nope, I've actually seen a lot worse. This is pretty tame, in comparison. People always have to overreact to everything. Just post your problem and move on. The wailing and gnashing of teeth is getting a little ridiculous.

I'm running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate Edition, and am having problems with the game itself, not the OS. In this situation the OS makes no difference. It comes down to somewhere, something within the game is glitching and causing it to crash, chances are its something as small as a Memory leak.

EDIT:
Just got off of chat again,a nd they told me this time that it was Windows 7 that was the problem. They claimed that the game isn't "fully compatible" with Windows 7 and told me to either play it as is, or to "remove" Windows 7 and install XP or Vista. That was enough to make me just call tech support, waiting in queue as I am typing...

I'm sorry to say this, but if I were Bioware's chief, I'd say to the devs to stay working all the weekend until a solution to the crashes is found and published. It's just incredible someone could release a gamebreaking patch (which some of us CANNOT decide if to install it or not (-Steam user-)) without the appropiate prior testing. It's highly unprofessional, and damages a lot the company image.
But well, they'll know what they're doing...
Speaking of company image. Ever heard of Funcom? Here take a look at the history of the company if you want a good laugh.
http://funcomfails.ytmnd.com/
Long story short the stock value at release was around $50 a share. A little over a month later stock prices were around $2 a share and have not gone much higher than $5 since than. Anyway I could go on a long time feel free to read up on the rest of why this happened. In the shortest way possible they released a bugged out game / patches were silent on the issues and preferred to ignore them rather than fix them. I hope Bioware does not follow this patch because the end is not a pretty thing.
I have been a huge Bioware fan for a long time but 11 days with no word back from any representitive other than a BS "We are looking into it" really makes me sad. I'm sure many others were also really looking forward to trying Awakening and can't even play DA:O now at all.
Something this huge that so many people experience would be damn near impossible to miss this likely means they knew about it and like someone above stated were likely pushed by EA to rush it out anyway. Well if that is the case at least say sorry to the community lock up the dev's over the weekend with hot pockets and plenty of coffee and rush out a fix for this horrible patch!
/end rant
Oh also... BUMP

I've tried the "turn off autosave and the online tab options" fix. Doesn't help. I tried playing windowed. Doesn't help.
This wouldn't be so bad if it only affected Awakenings, but now the original game is unplayable. I never had a single crash before Awakenings and 1.03. And I'm on Steam, so no rolling back. If jlg6184's account of tech-support is accurate and Bioware has decided to not support the 64 bit systems, well, it would have been nice to have heard that before I pre-ordered the damn thing and broke my game.

Add me to the list of people with trouble.
Played through Dragon Age all the way on older patches without it crashing once. Didn't try DAO on 1.03 but after starting Awakening the game would freeze ever minute or so then would resume with the system tray having told me the display driver had stopped responding and had been recovered. This was with the 196.21 nvidia drivers. I updated to the beta 197.13 drivers and the game seemed fine until I got to the market in amaranthine. At that point the game (not the driver this time) crashed. Since then whenever I resume the game, still in the town, I get the same thign with the display driver reporting it has crashed every minute or so.

20thcenturyghost brought up an interesting point in a different thread. This game was originally deigned on DirectX 9. Yet Win7 and Vista run on DX10 (I think 11 for ultimate). have you tried installing the end user runtimes? www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx
Instructions:
Make a folder and call it DX on your desktop.
Download the file, when you run it, it asks for a destination path to extract the files. Use the folder you just made.
Go into the DX folder and find the setup utility and follow its instructions from there.
It doesn't say you have to restart afterward, but it's probably a good idea to do so either way. When you're done, you may delete the DX folder.
edit: if you need to find out what version of DirextX is on your computer, go to Help and Support from your star menu and type in directx and you'll see a link that says. "What version of DirectX is on your computer?" Let this run a diagnostic and you'll know for sure. If you let it connect to the internet, it says it will also check your drivers.
