Might try this to fix the crashes:

20thcenturyghost brought up an interesting point in a different thread. This game was originally deigned on DirectX 9. Yet Win7 and Vista run on DX10 (I think 11 for ultimate). have you tried installing the end user runtimes? www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx

Instructions:

Make a folder and call it DX on your desktop.
Download the file, when you run it, it asks for a destination path to extract the files. Use the folder you just made.
Go into the DX folder and find the setup utility and follow its instructions from there.

It doesn't say you have to restart afterward, but it's probably a good idea to do so either way. When you're done, you may delete the DX folder.

edit: if you need to find out what version of DirextX is on your computer, go to Help and Support from your star menu and type in directx and you'll see a link that says. "What version of DirectX is on your computer?" Let this run a diagnostic and you'll know for sure. If you let it connect to the internet, it says it will also check your drivers.

Thanks, I'll try this out now. I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium but it said I'm using DirectX 11 (with HD 4870 video card.. hmm, I didn't even know it supported DX11). The link didn't work but it's pretty easy to find just type 'directx' in the search bar and look for the end user thing, downloaded a file called 'dxwebsetup', I'm assuming that's it?

I'll report back if it changes anything. If it does, cookies be coming your way.

Unless you play Awakening that should work, but Awakening REQUIRES the 1.03 patch

No issues until Awakening was installed, and now the PC crashes and burns every other spellcast! No mods, no issues before Awakening was installed. Very discouraging after DA:O and ME2 worked so well. I'm also wondering about the lack of anyone commenting from Bioware - throw us a frickin' bone here, guys!

Running Windows 7x64, 8Gb RAM, AMD Athlon IIX3 425, ATI Radeon HD4650, 1Tb drive

I'm also crashing like crazy. Running Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Never really had this game crash on me before 1.03. I thought there was something wrong with my system, but all my other games are running fine.

Whatever it is, it's not something peculiar to Vista or Windows 7. I crash every play session now.

Crashing a lot in DAO-Awakening.
There's Holy Smite crashes (and other spells) and what looks to be just random crashes.

Also having crash problems. WinXP SP3, E8600 CPU, Realtek sound, 2.5GB RAM, GTX260 GPU. Running DA:O 1.03 (no DA:A) at 1920x1200 high detail - can't recall AA.

Oddly, I had no problems during the tutorial section and the first section of the game. All my crashes have also come immediately after cut scenes.

Meh. I've pretty much given up. It took like 15 tries to beat the end boss just because about half way through the fight, CTD. I think it's her ultimate ability or something. 'Oh no! The Warden is winning! I must stop them. Go Go CTD!'

Practically unplayable.
I have been pulling my hair out for a week (yes, because of the crashing and my limited play time, it really did take me a week to beat it), triple checking my drivers and what not to make sure I was as up to date as possable.

A lack of response from Bioware is very disheartening. Especially since for 40$ we basically got a very expensive DLC that can be played through in a very short amount of time. Really makes me regret having bought DAA at all.

In case it makes any kind of difference:

Win 7 Pro 64 bit
AMD Phenom 8750 Triple Core
GeForce 9600 GT x2
8 Gig RAM
DirectX 11

Sigh, here is the canned responses to my 1.03 crash problem from EA tech support. I like how he says neither Windows 7 nor 64-bit is tested (maybe he meant Windows 7 64-bit, but there is definitely an "or" there). (most recent message [from me] first and oldest at the bottom).

Ever since installing DA:O Awakenings, I have been getting a lot of game cras...

Customer 03/24/2010 01:10 PM

I already tried compatibility mode (which I stated in my last message, but did it again). I also already have it running as administrator (which I didn't mention) so neither of these suggestions has solved my problem.

I am sorry, but it doesn't say anywhere in the requirements that the game is not supported on 64-bit and it absolutely states that Windows 7 IS supported so I am not sure were you are getting your information but I would appreciate this issue being forwarded to a more senior support person (or manager). Is there a way to get my money back? Or return the game? This has ONLY started happening since the 1.03 patch so it seems entirely likely that is the problem (especially from reading the different support forums).

Requirements listed for the game....

Minimum:

OS: Windows XP (SP3) or Windows Vista (SP1) or Windows 7

Processor: Intel Core 2 Single 1.6 Ghz Processor (or equivalent) or AMD 64 2.0 GHz Processor (or equivalent)

Memory: 1GB (1.5 GB Vista and Windows 7)

DirectX®: DirectX (November 2007)

Hard Drive: 20 GB HD space

Sound: Direct X Compatible Sound Card

Recommended:

OS: Windows XP (SP3) or Windows Vista (SP1) or Windows 7

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 Ghz or AMD Phenom II X2 Dual-Core 2.7 Ghz Processor or equivalent

Memory: 2 GB (3GB Vista and Windows 7)

Hello,

Thank you for writing to Electronic Arts customer support.

Unfortunately the game is not tested on Windows 7 or 64 bit environment. There is a work around that you can try but still there is no guarantee about it. You can try to run the game as administrator, to run the game as administrator:

1. Right-click on the shortcut icon of the game on your desktop.

2. Choose the option "Run as Administrator".

3. Choose to allow the game.

If the game still not runs properly, Please try to play it in Compatibility mode. Please visit the following link for the steps to play the game in compatibility mode:

If there is anything else we can help you with please let us know.

Thank you,

Joseph

Issue is still occurring.

I emptied my TEMP folder (using %TEMP% and deleting all files that were not in use [one empty text log file was in use])

I closed all processes running under my user name using Task Manager, leaving only system processes that would not close (or that would close and then restart automatically)

I closed my anti-virus, Windows Security Essentials

I verified I have the latest nVidia drivers for my video card.

I verified that Mass Effect 2 and any other Stream game I have purchased still works.

Again, this did not happen prior to the DA: O patch 1.03 or installing Awakenings (I did both at the same time so I can't be sure).

This is happening after I have defeated "A Roadside Encounter" and attempt to travel from that battle to the Mage's Tower. It happens in the exact same spot every time.

I have tried disabling PhysX on the nVidia card as well as running DA: O in compatibility mode (Windows Vista SP2) with no luck. I am running SLI and my nVidia Control Panel is deferring to in-game video settings (not overriding anything).

Please refer to the DxDiag report for more information.

Ever since installing DA:O Awakenings, I have been getting a lot of game crashes when playing either DA:O or Awakenings. Specifically, I am currently crashing to desktop every time after a traveling encounter travelling from Redcliff to the Mages Tower. Every time I leave the encounter and start to travel on the world map, it crashes to desktop. I am attaching a DxDiag report.

I'm disgusted by that answer, and (as per usual EA) I'm disgusted with the support evident here.

Now 4gb+ machines are becoming the norm - particularly to run MODERN GAMES (heh) - 64bit operating systems are becoming more widespread to accommodate the greater memory available -unless you were mis-sold an 8gb machine with Vista 32bit Bog Standard edition by Dell or some other ****fest company, of course.

For support to shut their ears off and go 'la-la-la' when 64bit comes up - on the current flagship operating system no less - is nothing less than irresponsible to your customers.

You've guessed it; installed 1.03 and now my favourite spell is Mana Crash.

Get this sorted. It's a memory leak. It's repeatable. Go address hunting. (Quests Updated)

If they haven't stated it's incompatible with 64-bit machines (or alternatively prefixed Vista/7 with 32-bit) in the system requirements, then quite frankly getting told NOW that it's incompatible with 64-bit systems is complete bull****.

Add me to the list of crashees. Mine started after I installed the 1.03 patch and was still playing just DAO, not Awakening. My crashes ONLY occur during combat... frequently.

And much like many others I am running DAO on a 64 bit system with Windows 7 Home Premium.

- AMD Phenom II X3 720 @ 3.4ghz

- 4gb DDR2-800

- ATI Radeon 4770 w/Catalyst 10.3 drivers

You are right. EA support is wrong. Got the Awakening box under the nose. It clearly says it supports Win7 x64.

Not tested is something else though. I have tried all the fixes posted here and elsewhere Deactivating PhysX, updating DX runtime libs, compatibility modes.. Nothing works: Win 7 + patch 1.3 = borkage.

Regarding EA's claims that DA isn't compatible with Windows 7 x64, this is in direct contradiction to what EA reported to Microsoft to get the WIndows 7 compatibility checkmark, refer to the Microsoft Windows 7 Compatibility Center.

Unless EA lied, or otherwise is engaged in some sort of misrepresentation, that is.

I had no crashing problems when I went through the Origins campaign in the fall. I updated to 1.03 and I have fairly regular and predictable crashes. Installing Awakening seems to have made them more frequent.

What happens is over time my RAM usage gradually moves up. Every time I go into a transition or go through a cut scene, when I return to game play my RAM usage is a little higher. When I get to about 72% usage, framerate drops a bit. Nothing unplayable, but noticeable. This takes between an hour and an hour and a half of play time. If I stop playing at this point, save, and restart the game, RAM usage goes back to the ~60% it usually starts at. If I try to push on without restarting, the next combat the game crashes to desktop.

I did some reading and found the instructions to change the affinity for the process. This made no difference at all unfortunately.

My specs: (from DAO config tool)

Intel® Core™2 Quad  CPU   Q9300  @ 2.50GHz
1869 MHz clock speed

Physical Memory: 3.99 GB

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 1.0GB VRAM
Driver version: 196.21

Sound adapter: Headset (Creative HS-1200 Headset)
Driver version: 6.0.6001.18000

Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Ultimate
DirectX 10.0  (Aug2009) or later

Game info:
Game version 1.03
Launcher 1.01
Config Version: 1.03
Unistall version: 1.03

Installed: Origins, Awakening, and all the DLC (Return to Ostagar, Stone Prisoner, Warden's Keep)

I installed Origins and Awakening from disk, not from Steam or Direct2Drive or whatever.

Windows is up to date with all critical, important patches. (updated yesterday)

Hope this helps. If you need more info, let me know.

Hmmm...tried a fix that seemed to work for me.

I downloaded and installed the full DiectX 9 runtime package from Microsoft. After installing it I was able to complete the entire endgame boss fight with no crashes and didn't have any in the Epilogue either.

It'll take some more testing but I think I may have cleared it up. I'll start a new game a bit later to be sure.

Oh...the link is here.

This is ridiculous it crashes when auto save and quick saves are initialized.

And some times when casting some spells. Has Bioware / EA ever had time to test this and do some debugging.

It crashes almost randomly within a 20 min time frame. This should be patched ASAP.

I'm experiencing these crashes in both Awakening and Origins, I had to go through parts of the campaigns multiple times due to this mishap. Please, get us a fix soon.
