I'm thinking about playing a mage on my next playthrough and I was wondering if I take shapshifting can my mage still fire off spells in animal form?

Yeah. As cool as shape-shifting could have been, its implementation is pretty bad. Shifting has a cast time, and you basically forego all of your mage-ness just to do be a melee fighter or tank. If the transition between forms was seamless, and you could at least cast some type of spells in animal form, then shape-shifting would be great. It can still be fun, though.
