If you have the dowloaded version, you can also browse to the EA Download Manager cache and find the installer file, right-click and change the compatibility to Windows 2000. This fixed my issue as well.

You can see where the error occurred. This is because the unrar.dll in the windows\\\\system32 directory is out of date with that expected by the compiler. It is looking for a procedure in the dll that obviously does not exist in the old version
I installed the demo version of winRAR and then the install worked fine.
Another alternative if you are technical minded is to get the latest version of the unrar.dll and copy it over the old one. Dont try this if you are not a nerd though B)

i'd suggest to anyone who has the dvd version like me to just go to gamestop[if thats where you bought it] and get them to replace the disc after i tried the new disc it worked like a charm for me :). but honestly any games buy at gamestop since they have no prob replacing the discs for free.

I have the EA digital download version I bought last night. After 2 hours I finally got it working, better than the 4 days it took me to get the original install to work. EA needs to fix all this installer crap, too many bad PC installers is preventing me from buying their games. I would have bought Bad Company 2 and Mass Effect 2 already for PC if it wasn't for the bad history of install problems.

I purchased the original DA:O from Impulse (Stardock) and it was a nightmare to get working, EA finally had to give me another key. I still don't know if Impulse or EA was responsible for my problems. Now I can't get the Impulse version to work if I uninstall it unless I install from Impulse then download from EA DM again and reinstall it. Meaning if I want a fresh install that is two installer downloads of over 8GB each.

I had to use a combination of things to get DA: O Awakening to work. I had to manually reinstall DA:O, over my existing install. Manually reinstall 1.03 patch and then update winrar to the latest version and run the setup.exe in compatibility mode for Windows 2000.

Pretty ridicules actually.

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this question but it seems the closest so please bear with me...

I was able to install and play Awakenings with no trouble, however, other users on the PC are not able to do the same. When they started DA it is DAOrigins and not Awakening that plays. The "Other Campaigns" is grayed out. DA Awakenings is in the DVD tray. Playing with Vista 64.

Thank you for any advice that you can give.

WORKS! I followed imkio's advise, copy cd to pc, (dunno if it's necessary too), go to setup.exe, under properties tab, change compatibility mode to Windows 2000. Gosh, am about to demand for a refund or replacement. Txs to all wizs who found this method!

the compatibility works for alot of people i see. but you can also go to your cd from "My Computer" and do that compatibility thing on the cd itself.

Gamers, All this mumbo jumbo you are subjecting yourself to while trying to install Awakenings is foolish and a waste of time. These installation problems are the responsibility of Bioware and should be addressed and corrected by Bioware. Sure, some of these tinker-toy solutions may work for some of you but makeshift fixes don't correct the problems for the majority of users. Be patient and wait for the programmers who wrote the code to repair the bugs. The majority of these posts sound like it's a crisis of life threatening proportions if you're unable to play the game immediately upon receiving it. I'm sure Bioware will come through with a new patch a.s.a.p. and you'll be able to return to your virtual world with a donut in one hand and a mouse in the other minus all the anxiety and loss of sleep.

QFT - I have to say I do agree.
I'm imminently expecting my copy to arrive and whilst I'm not overly confident it'll work - blah-de-blah - I'm not gonna let it ruin my day!

Agreed. Life is too short. The bottom line is this stuff should work. Period. If it doesn't, move on to something else and check back for a solution. If no solution comes, then it is yet another hard lesson learned about trusting EA.

While I very much applaud a call for patience (it seems no one has any anymore), for me the most important part of using a computer is being able and/or willing to learn about it and what you're doing on it. These workarounds teach you more about how computers work and what goes in to using them. I'm also used to having to do that for older games and it used to just be part of owning a computer. While it's nice to have something work, for me there's a thrill of satisfaction that with a few simple steps (I'm no programmer) I can make something work when it otherwise shouldn't have. And compatibility mode is certainly no "hack" or anything like that; it's a very simple process. Also, waiting for a solution? I'd prefer to play my game sometime this year.

I'll stop vaguely necroposting here.

I couldn't install Awakenings or reinstall DA:O on either Windows XP or Windows 7 (64-bit). I tried all of the posted fixes and nothing worked. I even tried two other game discs for the original DA. All attempts (many, many attempts) failed with data errors. Looking through the installation logs, the errors seemed to occur randomly. After repairing my Window 7 registry with a system repair program (I used Advanced Registry Optimizer and repaired all the .dll errors), both the DAO and Awakenings installed without problems. No compatibility changes were necessary. At least for me, this seems to be more a Windows problem than a Dragon Age problem. I hope this tidbit is of use to someone.

For XP users

Possible the problem is that unrar.dll is too old and installation fails because of this. What you can do is to download unrar.dll from http://www.rarlab.com/rar_add.htm run that exe it installs unrar folder under program files. Now go to that folder and search for unrar.dll and copy paste it to C:/windows/system32/ folder. Possible you have different windows folder, but you should find system32 .This fixed the issue for me.

Still no luck installing. Grapp - the Awakening installer says that it's extracting its own unrar.dll. I also tried running the updater directly to see if it would pick up the .dll file (I did NOT have this .dll anywhere under WINDOWS to start with).

For me the install stops at mother_revenge.bik and after few minutes it shows "Installation Failed". I have tried the compatibility windows 2000, unrar.dll, or even un-install Origins and install everything again. All dont work.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I am running Windows7 64bit and I bought the digital version as well.
I was to the point of giving up until i googled the "awakening failed installation problem"
which lead me here, a million thanks.
I browswed to the C:\\ProgramData\\EA Core\\cache\\EADM\\ { johndoe@blahblah.net }\\dragonage_ep1_eu1,
of course you'll be looking for your email address. find the setup.exe file, right click, run compatibility
for Windows 2000... then run setup.exe....... worked like a champ !!!!

Thank god for forums!

I had the exact same issue. Setting compatibility mode to Win 2k worked.

I'm running Windows 7 x64.
