Recently, I attempted to upgrade Maric's Blade/Cailian's Shield + Cailan's Armor Set from Red Steel to Dragonbone. Everything was successfully re-tiered except for Maric's Blade, which remained Red Steel. I am at a high enough level for Dragonbone... but the blade just will not upgrade. I am selling it to the smith at Warden's Keep then travelling away and then back to no avail.:crying:

Any ideas?

Edit: This is on the PC, sorry for leaving out such vital information!

it might be that the sword has no other referenced material other than red steel(i.e. like starfang is always a starmetal sword)

Do you have any runes in the sword? If there are runes in it, it won't upgrade (I know this from personal experience with the exact same issue. I took the runes out, and it upgraded to Dragonbone on the first attempt.)

Vaeliorin is right about the most likely cause; I *have* had some issues with items not upgrading even without runes in them (I was level 22 and Duncan's sword still wanted to be Red Steel, for example). The only thing I found to work was trying, trying, again.

You can upgrade all Cailan and Duncan's stuff. When I did it I had to leave and re-enter Warden's Keep because it upgraded one item from the chest at a time: Cailan's breastplate, rezone, greaves, rezone, Duncan's sword, rezone, etc.

I'm on ps3 also.

For me, it always works by a). leave the equipment with no runes in 'Warden chest', B). travel to circle tower, c). travel to bracillian forrest -> the elven camp area, d). return to wardens keep.

For some wierd reason I need to travel to two different locations to up-level all the equipment in the chest in one go, and the players camp area is a 'no go'.

On the other hand, this procedure works every time on my ps3, it's quickly done, and with luck one might spawn the 'axe-meter' incedent...

The whole thing is silly, Lore established its suppose to be a dragonbone sword, its silly its not just locked into that. I mean doesnt bioware read their own books?

Is there any way to upgrade the sword in Awakening? I didn't realise until after finishing Origins that Marics sword + Cailins shield give +5 stamina regen in combat. As an Arcane Warrior that's pretty helpful. The shield is dragonbone but the sword is red steel. I didn't try to upgrade them in Origins, they just sat in my inventory.

Try leaving it in the inventory chest at Vigil's Keep. Again, make sure it doesn't have any runes on it.

@ concussed duck. I didn't either until you said ! But no, you must upgrade them before you import your character.

Esbatty, I'm with you! Always learning something new. Can't wait to try upgrading! Thought I was the cat's meow when I finally worked through the Starfang metal. Now I know i'm just s-l-o-w. Does that work on the Cousland family sword?

No need to travel away.  Just don't buy the sword, exit the shopping window, then talk to the Blacksmith again.  Rinse and repeat until the blade shows up as Dragonbone.

I do this with all my upgradeable gear all at once at level 12.  It takes saying goodbye several times but eventually it's all upgraded to teir 7.

Good luck.
