Lazy writers will often use this as what they think as a clever way to convince the player/reader that, 'sh** just got real'. When in fact it's just a dick move.
Basically they create and kill a character to give the illusion of the trope, 'Everybody Dies', without actually affecting the story or the world at all.

You make too much sense.

Quote for Truth...
IMO DA:O has always come up short in terms of potential...the game has great potential, but Bioware never quite realizes it....you're given some choices, but they don't have much impact (take Jowan from DA:O for instance). There's way too much linearity. Mhairi is a poor attempt at a plot twist.
The DAO:A would be more amusing/interesting if they randomly killed off one of the three in the joining....shake things up a little....or make you choose like in ME1 when the characters have made some sort of contribution (although I never really used Ash or Kaiden much)....
I wonder how much of an effect this expansion will have on Dragon Age II....if there is one...or maybe it'll be based on a totally different character (i.e. Morrigan's child -if this were the case, adds insult to injury about choices having impact - a child that's somewhat a god...sounds familiar....where have I heard that before??)
I had a blast with ME2...finished it before DA:O, which I started first....it started to get a little tiring fight after fight after fight...I wonder how long it will take me to complete this half-baked expansion...
apologies for rambling

Does anyone know if there is a way to keep Mhairi alive during the joining or is she destined to die?
She dies. Always.

Daveth and Jory both died in Dragon Age: Origins. It's the Joining; someone has to die. That you don't like the fact that someone dies doesn't make it bad writing.

The way I see it, you helped her do what she was there for, she is a member of the Legion of the Dead and one of the only survivors left, I prefer to let her stay in her order and see what she does with it.
