Basically this. A lot of people play Mages or Rogues, or even non-SnB specced Warriors. She's a tank, I need her. More than Oghren, or even the Mage. I'd have preferred if they checked the class (and as a bonus, spec) of the PC and kill off an NPC that isn't necessary. Being left without a tank kind of sucks.Mirthadrond wrote...
I'd have to agree with others here: Killing off my tank in the beginning of the game, was extremely annoying.
It would have been more interesting if they 'randomly' killed one of the characters during the joining, rather than automatically killing my only tank.
Also, on the bad writing part... it kind of is. Her whole story screams "OMG I AM SO GONNA DIE DURING THE JOINING!" and then? It happens. So predictable. And to add insult to injury, as has been mentioned... Oghren's joining. Horribly done, especially considering BioWare killing off the only tank you have acces to at that stage.

I finally get a female warrior to complete my party and she dies just like that?!
BS, BioWare, Oghren doesn't cut it. Not at all.
Yeah I was excited when they put in a female warrior, and then just like that she dies 15 minutes into the game pathetic. I tried all kinds of variations to try to keep her alive during the joining but no we just get stuck with my least favorite character fron Origins Oghren. Why they brought Oghren back I don't know I hated that dwarf he was funny at times but mostly just annoying. I never used him in Origins.

quite frankly - I was hoping the drunk runt would die. What would be great is if the death was random or based on some small choices you make during the opening questline
Yeah that was my hope to not to mention about a month ago Bioware was hyping this new female warrior as one of the new members of the team. They did that only to kill her 15-20 minutes into the game, that is just pathetic.

If they'd made it random, then all of the impact would've gone right out of the scene.
"Uh oh, Mhairi died. I better reload and hope Oghren dies this time!"

What I did my first time around was to keep Oghren. Now the second time, I decided against Oghren in the hopes that with him out of the picture Mhairi would survive but again, that failed. I suggest Bioware added a patch where she gets to continue. They took too short a time in making this expansion, it only took me a day to finish it. Just too bloody short for my tastes, considering the length of NWN and NWN2 exp packs...

First - she has a character video and write up on the site
Second - she has a rep bar
Third - they kill her off within a very short space of time
It's just nonsensical.
It doesn't create any kind of emotion other than confusion and annoyance because her character is almost completely undeveloped by that point. I didn't feel shock what I felt was: "something's gone wrong with the game or maybe she turns up later after some quest in the fade or something". But no. She's just died. I didn't think she was actually dead because she's advertised as a companion - fine a companion for five minutes. Great.
I agree that it's bad writing because there is very little opportunity to form any kind of a bond with her and so her death ultimately doesn't really have any emotional impact and therefore serves no purpose. I think had I not been expecting her to survive then I would have been more affected by her death but because I expected her to be a companion her death merely confused me.
There isn't really a need for us to be reminded how dangerous the joining is by killing of a character. In DAO it served the purpose well because we didn't know that the joining was potentially fatal. Now we do know this actually killing a character with the joining is a like a cut scene where you get mugged by cut-purses and, say, Anders gets stabbed in the chest and dies. After all getting mugged/wandering backstreets is dangerous. It may be realistic but do people play games like DAO for this kind of realism?

As always, Bioware can't please everyone all the time. Go figure.
As for killing off the only tank... I got Justice in the first two hours of my game. He's the first real quest you get. You're meant to get him first. Secondly, for six gold you can respec Ohgren into a tank. And gold is ridiculously easy to come by in this game. Admittedly, I transfered my character with 230 gold, but still, I finished the game in 10 hours carrying 730 gold. So I made 500 gold just by playing the game through. Not to mention that everything is way overpowered in this game, so if you're buying pots for anyone you're doing something wrong. So 6 gold to respec Ohgren is nothing. It's about the equivalent of buying a greater health pot in DA:O as far as fraction of your total income goes.

All I got was that we 'sense darkspawn.' I do love when my girl says 'I'm sensing Darkspawn' - or whatever,' when I'm in a mob of them. Yay! Glad I lopped off my Fading Years for THAT information! Whew! To whoever said this was Shades of Puma Man, "I'm still not sensing danger!" - too, too true.

Because the only way you can find out when the Joining "is actually needed" (or rather, when a Blight actually begins) is if there are Grey Wardens. Without anyone going through with the Joining, there aren't any Wardens, and hence nobody to sense when an Archdemon does rise. How do you think the Wardens have persisted in the four centuries between the Fourth and Fifth Blights? And besides, at this point in the game, the only Warden in the Keep is you. Gotta' replenish the numbers, somehow.Ceridraen wrote...
I'm still wondering why there's a Joining in the first place. There's no Archdemon - why not just hold off on the 'cut young warrior/mage lives short' in a 'just in case' way, until they know it's actually needed?

1. I need a tank. As it has been said above, attempting to get Justice near-immediately messes with the game. The game is getting difficult without a tank. I have to Mages and two DPS in my part right now. Luckily two mages is overpowered so I don't think it will be a problem until the harder boss fights.
2. I hate Oghren. I hate the fact that they made his joining funny and slammed it right up against something that is supposed to show how hardcore the DA universe is. Dark Fantasy my ass.
How would I have done it? Someone should die at the joining. Preferably Oghren would die a horrible death, but that would just be too funny. In absence of that, they should have just eliminated whoever was redundant. If you are a mage, Anders dies, if you are Rogue, Oghren dies, warrior, Mhairi dies.
It might not completely fix the balancing problem, but I think a custom DPS warrior can handle tanking for a while (Mine did until I got Justice, I am not replaying as a Blood Mage).

I get it. Not everybody survives the Joining. We know this. Fine to get it slammed home to us again. Just not this way, though. And I agree the juxtaposition of someone dying along with Oghren acting like the Joining is a visit to Porky's and belching ... yah great. Great way to undermine your own supposed point of the seriousness of this.
If she was a redshirt, *make her a redshirt* like Jory or Daveth, and have her die. No approval bar, no profile on the site, NO SURPRISE. Oh sure. The funny clues, her portrait looked different, it almost seemed like they were kind of smirking "will they figure out the psyche-out before it happens?"
And my other dislike about this is yes the pure practical loss of a character that was interesting both for tactical and "variety" reasons. Never had a female tank in Origins. Hey! A female tank! Great! Oh! She's Dead, Jim! And once she dies, you cannot get another Sword & Shield tank until you pick up Justice. Unfortunately, while Sigrun is very easy to pick up, and Velanna more or less easy, getting Justice requires you to FINISH Blackmarsh. It's kinda a long time to wait for her replacement.
I'm hoping for a mod that lets her survive, or creates a virtual clone. Like I said, call her Iraihm. Unfortunately, there won't be one until they update the Toolset for DA:A ; and they still haven't.

Maybe. Doesn't it seem a bit odd then to write a promo for her on the site and on the forums? Here's this great new char, Mhairi! Oh did we mention she dies right at the beginning ?! They didn't write a promo for Jory or Daveth. They didn't write a promo for the Ishal Tower guard. I have no problem with redshirt temps; just make clear they are who they are.
Again, that's what makes her more of a psyche-out job. Just irritating.

They hyped "Five new companions and an old favorite (rofl) returning"
Suddenly there were six companions advertised. That one of them had to croak was all but sure. As soon as Mhairi announced that she was so looking forward to the joining, I thought "Uh,oh. She's the one. Dammit, my only tank, and the rare female tank to boot."
So I deleted the game and turned my PC into an Orlesian Warden tank. I wasn't willing to wait until I had the opportunity to get Justice. Usually I need the tank the most in the beginning of games. Later on the rogues and/or mages or other dps dealers become good enough to be without one. Usually, that is.
As for the 'drama', there wasn't any. My spidey sense was right, Mhairi kicked the bucket. I knew nothing of her character, my PC had no connection to her, I had no cause to feel sad other than being irked that the only early available tank died. A female tank is refreshingly rare. I'd rather one of the others had died (yes, including Sigrun and/or Velanna, so please, no cries of "misandry")

I would have prefered to wait one more month a get around 10-12 recruits who radomly died during the ritual leaving you with 6 companions. It would greatly improve the replayability of Awakenings.

That right there in bold text is why I was not happy about them killing her off. I did the same thing Sabriana did
as soon as she died. I deleted my transfer character game and just rolled an Orlesian tank and used it to unlock everything and get a feel for expansion.

And a cool joke from bioware -> an old favorite oghren, lol muahaaaa.... whos favorite was he lol man man man, really awesome
Now i see the only one in awakening to play with is Velanna and two other clowns. With Mhairi and my wardog, my team would have been complete (H)

True enough, people didn't expect her to die and some of us wanted to use her for the rest of the expansion, being announced prior to release and all. But then, people didn't expect Yoshimo to betray you in BG2 and some of us wanted to use him for the rest of that game. Should I blame Bioware for Yoshimo's betrayal? If they said that Mhairi will die in the promo it would be a spoiler, not to mention how much of a spoiler would be if they said "you might not want to use Yoshimo as a companion and waste xp on him because he will ultimately betray you" prior to BG2's release. **** happens, get over it
At least Mhairi dies early and not half-way through the game like Yoshimo

I was originally hoping Mhairi would be the Awakening counterpart to Alistair. Instead, it's Justice. <_<
