That's the whole point. You need to see people, good people, die to truly be a Grey Warden commander. I love it! Teasing us with a pseudo-Ser Cauthrien, only to take her away by the joining. That's the tragedy of the Wardens.
Are you kidding me? Like there isn't "Enough" tradegy in the world of Thedas?
Look, if the Bioware writing team wanted to instill a sense of loss they could
have very well done so with an important Character "That Is Not a Party Member,"
I'm sorry, I just don't see the point of giving her a Character Page, Trailer, fairly
moving dialogue and reasons for wanting to be a Grey Warden, only to have
her die during the Joining. Now...'if' she had died during Awakening's final
confrintation, would I still be upset? Yes, but only because I liked Mhairi.
However, it would not have felt like such a pointless move on the part of
the Dev Team. Hero Characters sacrificing themselves to beat the Great
Enemy in the Final Fight is a pretty common theme in High/Dark Fantasy. Hell,
they even gave you the option for it in DA:O. But, killing Mhairi during the Joining?
That was stupid. There really isn't a better word for it. You could have easily thrown
in a non-essential character at that point, not one who, for all intents and purposes,
seemed like they were going to be with you till the Final Fight. I mean, I 'never' thought
that of Jory or Daveth, I knew they were dead one way or another fairly soon; and Mhairi
was in no way in the same veign as those two.

You gave Mhairi expensive gifts, didn't you? Fitted her with your Armor of the Legion? Wade's Superior Dragonbone Plate?
How was she any different from Jory or Daveth? Hell, you get more dialogue and backstory on Jory and Daveth than you do with Mhairi. The only thing that was misleading about Mhairi is that she had an Approval/Disapproval meter and that Bioware pimped her prior to release, leading one to think she was more influential.

You anwered your own question. You knew going in that Jory and Daveth were just filler characters. Mhairi was made out to be a real character.

Here, Here, wtf?! Why couldn't it have been Oghren!? Seriously, I was looking forward to her the most,, well, maybe Valenna as well, but still! Like Daveth, she seemed so sweet and deserving of an awesome role. besides that tragesy is overdone. Make your emotionally engaging games, Bioware, I'm all down for that, but stop killing people off, left and right! <_<

They gotta at least TRY to make it surprising don't they? Give it some sort of impact.JasonPogo wrote...

If they hadn't have done all that, you'd probably have just instantly thought "Oh, it's another Jory or Daveth." You wouldn't even invest a single thought into the character. In DA:O, even the first time through, you get a sense that Jory and Daveth are likely generic "filler" characters, but we don't know that the joining itself will get them both killed. You're more likely to think they'll get killed in the impending battle at Ostagar.
In Awakening, we know the joining ritual can kill. The only way to surprise a person now is by letting them think that a character will make it through.

I agree 100% brilliant twist and a shocker right at the game's opening. I LOVE IT! The joining is a scary ritual, and this reinforces the risks involved. Even the most pious and noble may not survive!
BAD ARSE START!
I got attached to her, and yeah, was looking to romance, but RPG wise, this was a cool micro emo moment for my character who was actually looking to sex her up. RIP Mhairi, Maker watch over your soul. *main PC lowers head* I will remember your sacrifice!

Was the only character that I personally thought was interesting.
The rest just didn't excite me.
I understand why, but...WHY????!!!??

And she was the one to die and yet she was the most dedicated out of them all. Irony is funny that way isn't it?

To be honest i call this bull**** or you have some very weird tastes. how can a bland char as mhairi compare to an apostate mage a pissed of keeper or a rogue bent on killing you or a spirit from the fade.
Anyway seeing the shock of so many players in this forum i say well played bioware well played. And finally we get some dark and gritty feel in dragon age
And she was the one to die and yet she was the most dedicated out of
them all. Irony is funny that way isn't it?
Dedicated? if you look at her profile and the way she acts she sounds more like a gloryhunter. The job of a grey warden can be described as this: its a ****ty job but someone got to it. Frankly im not surprised she failed

It just felt too rushed along, I mean you blink and you miss that Mhairi just died and the only acknowledgment is that Zaeed (the guy's name escapes me) just says "Oh too bad about Mhairi, next!"

That said, the scene was very...um...bland. I was hoping for more epic-ness.

Oh, and Bioware, for hyping the character and then killing her off so quickly, take this. You've earned it.

Yes it was.
No music, no right dark atmosphere. And we barely even knew Mhairi's name. She was killed off too soon for us to really care.
But the concept is fine.

Good job, Bioware. I was actually going to be annoyed if everyone made it through the Joining. I'm glad the teasers included Mhairi to throw us off the scent. =)
The interesting thing, seeing her die has made me more cautious in who I do recruit moving forward, waited a good 10 mins before getting the "rogue" given his vendetta and personal history with me being a noble.
GOOD STUFF! End the hate, this is classic RPG goodness! You don't always get what you want and twists like this = brilliant. Adds (albeit pseudo) weight to future choices and sets a standard (like Joss Whedon did with Serenity) that anyone can go at anytime! Endings are not always happy!
*tears of joy*
I'm moist.

Well, you know, a character's no good unless they have have some kind of glaring extremity. Mhairi lacked the dramatic persona, but it's why I liked her. I thought, "yay! a character who isn't some random castoff and is normal!" It's a personal grievance that they killed off the female warrior who was slated to be in my party as well. But eh... power to the emos and gangstas.

*Oghren guzzles the chalice, burps, and falls over dead.*
Anders: "uhh... guys... he's not moving."
