Mass Effect 2 unlocked at around midnight-1am GMT.
Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening has (on my Steam client no release date on the store page and the status of "Pre-Purchase". I also was able to preload it via a Steam command (I forget which), and I do have some files on my system. I don't know if I've got the full expansion preloaded, but I do know I have at least 1GB of the data. The folder for my DDE version of the game reads 18.6GB so if I can get a confirmation that'd be great.
But yes. Gief plx.

The best part is that people might still be buying Awakenings from their site !!! It says available, released on the 18th. Maybe some people are being billed right now as we rant, for a game that is at the same time "unavailable" AND "released'.
Let's learn our lessons from this experience :
1) never buy from Steam again
2) never pre-order anymore, unless it gives incredible advantages ingame. If we hadn't given our money in advance, Steam would have lost half of its customers for this expansion, and we would have downloaded it elsewhere.

I wish i never prepaid it. I will certainly never do it again. Dont worry about that Bioware/EA/Steam.

That adds to the set of my possible alternatives. Rumors say (its just one rumor on a german forum) that it might start in about 3 hours. Therefore i have 4 miles + nutkicking to distribute over 3 hours. Assume speed of light for the kicking process, i should walk 4/3 miles per hour.
Damnit I was about to go plan to do something to distract myself and the you pop the rumour...god damnit truly the 18th of march 2010 will go down in my life as the only one spent spassing out over a game release

Bad timing, misunderstandings or zombies, I don't care. They still didn't bother to drop any piece of information anywhere... we're discussing it by ourselves, and there's not even a Bioware moderator to comment.

Is it possible to install a non-Steam expansion on a Steam DA:O installation?
I think it's possible.. cause(this I assume)DA:O should be on your pc.. at steamapps/common map.. so it would be stupid if it was impossible

As for "never pre-ordering", you might be mixing terms. Steam operates via a pre-purchase, whereas some other places operate via a pre-order. A pre-purchase is where you buy the game in advance and pay for it before it's released. An online pre-order is where you register interest in the game and they charge you as it is dispatched, and most retail stores operate a pre-order service in which a copy is put to one side for each pre-order and they're not put out for the public until a few days after.
From where I'm sat, there's just under 8 hours left of the 18th of March (It's 4:15pm GMT here). Valve still have time to deliver the product and fulfill the release date.

It has been confirmed in various forums, that playing steam DA:O with non-steam DA:A works. The other way around it doesn't work. But : .... i did not try this, so you must stick to these "confirmations"

According to the Steam forums it should be, but it's not possible to install the Steam Awakening to disc version.
Wow three simultaneous nearly identical answers, must be a record

You're a free man, brother. Keep your faith in Steam if you're satisfied with the way they treat you... As for me Steam's over.
As I said it's the first time I ever bought anything through Steam (a friend of mine praised it, claiming it was the best service I could dream of). And it also happens to be the first time I get stuck with a prepaid game I can't have, while the rest of the world does. I'm not a masochist, I won't do it again

lol.. your friend was right.. but hell... first impression is strongest.. I recommend steam to many ppl myself too.. I'm a member for 4 years now.. and I truly havent had this problem ever.. + I have my games available like.. everywhere.
I don't need my games available everywhere, I just... need my games available
I don't really see the point in being able to play anywhere while the game is missing...
